Wow! I don't think they take everything into consideration with this survey.

tough to believe, my dad has been driving subarus since 1987 and has only had to do maitenance, plugs, wires, belts, oil changes.

I had to do more then maitenence to my 97 legacy but I drove it like it was a pro rally car... so that maybe why I had to put more money in then my dad.

But still below average for reliablilty is hard to belive.

I was gonna post this up this morning. I think its all bs. But they also said this included varying degrees of problems which a busted strut in a scoob versus a bad engine in a ford....this survey doesn't mean much to me.

It was conducted by JDPower and Associates...take it with a grain of salt. Companies pay JDPower to do studies and tests and GM has always dumped tons of money at JDP&A in the past. Have you ever seen a Japanese car win JDPower and Associates awards? Not really, because GM pretty much fills JDP&A's pockets with money. Take Consumer Reports or Edmunds word over JDP&A any day.

It's most likely low from all the 2.5 SOHC headgaskets.

And keep in mind, that everyone with an Impreza had to take theirs in to have their cruisecontrol cable fixed under warranty due to a recall...that means every single one of those cars VIN#s were entered in as "needing service." My mother in law has a Chevy Malibu 2001 sedan. It has had more problems in the past 3 years than any of my previous cars COMBINED. And the interior is a plastic rattle trap. But she doesn't take it in to get fixed because her warranty is up already, so she isn't going to go pay money to have it fixed.

The JD Powers survey questions include things that are considered "perceived quality". Which boils down to "I like the way it looks and feels". Notice the are no European cars listed. In the fine print it says that GM and Ford own European brands so they are lumped together. Ford and Mazda are both listed, so does Ford pull down the Mazda rating while Mazda pushs the Ford rating up? Interesting that no Chrysler products are listed nor any Mercedes Benz cars. No VW either. Why isn't Lexus and Toyota lumped together like Ford and Volvo or GM and Saab?

Consumer Reports is focused on what repairs were done not how do you like the car. Click and Clake like the Kia but have recognized the deep declined in VW reliability. The Jetta for example has engines from Poland and transmissions from Argentina then final assembly in Mexico. They also like the Mini Cooper but if you follow testimonial type reviews you find owners with over 45,000 miles complain that the car is falling apart with very expensive repairs.

Anyway this is an example of "figures do not lie but liars can figure".

So how is it that Lexus (1) is more dependable than Toyota (7)?

My mom's '02 Impala has had a few problems. Front and rear rotors warped. Steering assembly failed. Catalytic converter disintegrated. Car wouldn't even move with the exhaust blocked. The old banana in the tailpipe bit.

Headliner is also coming free around the sunroof. And panel gaps? When cold, the top panel at the dash pulls away from the center portion enough to stick a thumb in.

My friend at GM says they have a TSB for the dash pulling apart, and the steering columns are notorious. A fellow employee at GM had his replaced three times in the last year Alero.

    Bad news for GM...

This is like an initial quality rating. In other words, everytime a CEL goes in an Impreza, it counts as somethign going wrong with it. Not that CEL's are good but I've had them in both my cars and they never amounted to anything in terms of cost or repairs. Long term reliability reports would look vastly different.
