I figured I'd just start a thread for this so everything stays in the same place. I've already installed my cbe. I have a dp and will have an u.p. that need to be installed. I'll likely have a map that wrxjoe can flash for me as well. We'll most likely be doing this at wrxjoe's place, since he volunteered before. Also, there is a chance if RallyImp05 is around that we can throw my stock axelback on his car. (we're still trying to figure out if it will bolt right up or not?)... Anyway, i'd like to do this sometime this week, depending on when is a good time and day for most of you guys. I will supply pizza and beer! I'd rather do it either in the morning or the evening/night. I usually have the option to work either from 7-1 or 1-7 every day down in hayward, but if we find a good day for everyone I can try getting the whole day off. Let me know when is a good time for you all and we'll set it up!

Well we tried to have a mini install party last night at my house...But we got lazy and just drank some beer and got a little wiring done on my LGT. I'd offer my place up, but it would have to be a friday/saturday/sunday because I have to b up at 6am on the week days.

I'm going to be up in duluth tonight at about 8 with nothing going on the rest of the night. I'll be around tomorrow morning until about noon or so. Anyone think there would be enough man power to get this done within that time?

Sounds like I have a couple people at least for sure able to help out tomorrow morning at about 9. We'll plan on that then, and chux i'll bring that resonator for you if you can make it! The more people the better! I'll still bring beer for anyone hardcore enough to start that early

Go to bed tonight!!! You'll get a free resonator out of it. It'd be great to have another set of experienced hands to help out considering it'll be tight with time too. Plus i'd like to meet ya, and any of the other duluth guys I haven't met.

Well guys, I made it back to hayward in one piece, with no tickets, and a still strong running car! What a day huh? I can't thank all of you enough for all of the help! Deride, you came through in the clutch and saved the day with that other up pipe. My car seems quick as hell now, and probably really close to what my old s4 was (especially 0-70 or so). I did get the CEL after exactly 30 miles of driving, but I think that was expected until I get that resistor on the egt. There is a noticable noise that I'm kind of worried about... It's basically a loud whine/almost screaming sound from up by the turbo pretty much under any heavy acceleration. I'm not sure if it's some kind of leak, or just the turbo spooling up that much, it doesn't make it when i just rev it up either; but I didn't hear that in Joe's car today and i'm pretty sure he's boosting way more than me... It seems to run amazing though, smooth and strong, so maybe it's just a sound i'll need to get used to and it's normal. The turbo in general is about 10 times louder than before, sounds really cool. The exhaust doesn't drone at all on the highway, or get too loud under normal accel, which makes me really happy. That metalic sound will take a little getting used to though. Thanks again for everything, I owe you all! It was nice meeting you guys too, though me and chux had seen eachother about a hundred times before without realizing who eachother was. And evan, it was kind of a small world considering all of the mutal friends we have at school. Keep in touch guys and thanks again!

hey, I had 2 donuts and a beer for breakfast.......good day

glad it worked out. keep a bit of an eye on the nuts on the DP to cat back flange, I'm a bit worried that they'll come loose (couldn't get my crescent wrench in there to get them as tight as I wanted)....but it'll leak LOOOONG before they fall off.

well it started and ran ok, no idle issues or anything. I took a log at idle and one just around the block because he was in a hurry. I don't know if they will be useful but if you want I can send them to ya

That's usually the BOV gasket making that sound. It could be uppipe gaskets leaking, too.

If you just changed out your Uppipe, that screaming you're hearing is most likely the header/uppipe gasket. Especially if it is under heavy acceleration. Heavy acceleration = heavy boost. That gasket, in particular, is a royal PITA to get flush. Talk to Justin at Grimmspeed about his new thicker gaskets for the header/uppipe.

If you need a place to work on the car I'm available through August. Once September hits, I'll be available on Fridays. You can leave your car here overnight and then start wrenching the next morning.

Damn, that's the one we worked the hardest on too. It still pulls very hard, so It must not be losing much. We'll have to take another look at it here soon, in the meantime hopefully it doesn't get worse. Evan, I think i have a little of that semi truck sound you were talking about associated with that problem...

On my ebay uppipe (I'm not sure what you're running, but I went cheap) I had to pull it off three times. I eventually got thicker (not as thick as the ones at Grimmspeed, though) gaskets and ended up grinding off part of the uppipe flange to get it to fit flush. The resulting loss of material caused my uppipe to pull down on my turbo just a little bit. Had I kept my car I was going to redo the whole damn thing with a good (read: Helix flex, or Vishnu uber expensive) uppipe and some of those Crucial copper gaskets.

I think those thicker gaskets will do the trick, though.

Also, did you leave the stock EGT sensor in the bung? IF so, get rid of it, and plug the bung. Then pull the whole EGT assembly and do the resistor mod. Stock EGT sensor with no cat could result in EGT probe in your turbo.

Sound like your story is exactly like evan's (gran0393).. He did his three times too. We put an ERZ one in and it wouldnt seal right. Then we called jeremy (deride) and he saved the day by bringing an old turbo legacy one. That one bolted right up and fit like a glove, the guys said.. But I think the problem was that i was in such a hurry (ended up being 4 hours late for work) that everyone threw my car back apart as fast as they could- which was my fault. Something I think is leaking somewhere, from the sounds of it it's one of the up pipe ends. We'll have to look at it when there is no time constraint- and more time for beer- and take our time with it. Thanks for the help and the offer for the space etchy, lets definately stay in touch!

I would suspect that header to UP gasket aswell. I could feel the slightest pulse of air at idle there, but couldn't get the bolts any tighter.

I bet a new gasket there, and you'd be set (which you can do without removing anything, just those 2 bolts, and slide the new gasket in there)

I went to napa and o'riely here and hayward, both just looked at me like a deer in headlights and had no clue what I was even talking about. I guess they don't have them down here, or else I would have tried tackling it myself. I'll get ahold of justin and try getting one of those up here asap. There wasn't an egt bung in that up pipe that we forgot to plug was there..?

Some UPs don't have an EGT bung. You'd know right away if there was a bung without a plug. It's almost as loud as DP with no cat-back attached. RFL. Good luck with the gaskets. Let me know if you want to do an install day out here.

I've got some parts of my own coming...

Yeah, it's not that loud. My gf made a good point about what it sounds like yesterday... She said it sounds like when you hear a thousand frogs croaking in a swamp on a quiet night. I honestly couldn't disagree with her. lol, maybe that gives you a guys a good idea. Etchy, you're in Plymouth? I've heard of it, but not sure where it is... how far from duluth?

got the gasket today, and i'm working on it as we speak. There is definately a very noticable leak there at idle. I wasn't underneath when you guys were taking that stuff apart, but is there an easy way to get at that top up pipe nut without tearing the car apart? I'm having troubles with only having a crappy ratchet set. can't really even get it in there, and whatever sensor that is plugged into the header right there is definately in the way. Sorry i'm terrible with this stuff, it's the first time i've ever worked on a subie basically; plus I really don't have much wrench time in general.. Having a hell of a time getting that lower nut off too, and it's only been on there for a week. maybe i'm just that weak, or you guys are just that strong... lol

The sensor in the header is the O2 sensor. And yes, it's a bitch. Most auto parts stores carry an O2 socket. Buy it. It makes that job SO much easier. Either that, or dremel the crap out of the shielding around it.

Which top uppipe nut? The top one on the Manifold/UP setup? Do you have the fender liner taken off? That makes it a LOT easier to move around in there.

The downpipe has to be taken off.

That's the front O2 sensor. (The important one, don't break it.)

You only need to remove a heat shield and two bolts to replace the header-to-uppipe gasket. Removing that heat shield requires removing the O2 sensor unless there's a slot for the sensor cut in it (which should be done the first time that heat shield is taken off any WRX). Removing the O2 sensor is nearly impossible without an official O2 sensor socket. Get at it through the fender. I always take my RF wheel off when I have to remove that thing.

If you're replacing the uppipe-to-turbo gasket, I you have to remove either the header (easier) or the turbo (don't try) to get the uppipe's studs to drop all the way out of the turbo before you can get the gasket on. I usually find it easier to pull the entire header off in one piece rather than trying to separate it and just remove the collector (passenger-side) part.

i bought that socket, but joe has it about 80 miles away. All of the heat shields in there are gone. Good call on the fender liner, i'm also going to take out the airbox and try going at it from up top... I'll keep the progress posted, but i might end up throwing back together and getting some help again, we'll see.

thanks w.o.t.. I'm doing the header to up pipe gasket. The heat shield is already removed, and i'm working with my buddy to get those two bolts out. We have the fender liner out now, and just doing everything we can do break those bolts free. Wrxjoe's big muscles he always talks about are showing their strength now. I don't see why the dp needs to come off...?

Well, we found the root of the problem, which caused us more problems. The upper bolt was cross-threaded.... It was extremely tight becuase of the cross thread, not because it was flush with the up pipe. That's why it was leaking. Getting it off was a bitch, actually we never got the not off, we ended up cranking so hard on it that the bolt snapped. Bought two new bolts and nuts, and the remflex is going in now just to literally seal the deal.

The mini project is done, no more leaks. The sound is way different than before (quieter up front) also the power is smoother and stronger. The saabaru is ftw right now imo. :nana:
