Was just watching wcco and they had this segment on this device http://www.flextek.com/ company in brazil makes it i guess and is supposed to convert any car over to the new flex fuel E 85 gas. The guy installing the device said it works by expanding the bandwith of the injectors (making them spray longer). But thats all he really said. Anyway i just thought it was interesting i had no clue that Brazil doesnt import any fossil fuels and that most cars there run on some sort of flex fuel. Anyway Discuss!
ide do it, accept when i run a mix, it makes my exhaust sound 10000% more raspy (if that was even possible) i have a bunch of e85 stations around my house.
Its not so much the tunning that has to change. Its the strain on the fuel system. E85 is alot like alcohol. Its vary dry. What e85 can do to your car is kill fuel pumps, injectors, fuel pressure regulators, and fuel hoses. Its almost like you have to set your car up to run alcohol fuel.
If you car can handle E10 or E20, then you can be pretty sure those components will handle any amount of ethanol just fine. Doesn't mean it will run properly with E85, it just means the ethanol won't eat away at the components. I've been looking at converting to E85, and from what I've gathered, all you really need is ugpraded injectors and a better fuel pump. Seems almost too simple, and only about $250 to pick up some STi pinks and a walbro pump on nasioc. Oh well, I'll have at least a year to wait until my 50k warranty is gone, so no fun for me yet. Maybe someone else can be the guinea pig first.
Yea, a member on nasioc was running high blends of ethanol for 2 years on his 02 wrx and decided to check his components. His inspection showed no real wear at all on the lines or o-rings. I am fairly confident any car would be fine running it, it is more in the tuning and that flex vehicles have a sensor for sensing the amount of alcohol in the system so it know what injector pulsewidths to run. Ben
Not exactly sure how e85 would run under boost. I am sure you will need tunning for that. I have run e85 on my old buick alot of times. No problems with doing it. But I also dont care about what happens to the buick. The nice thing about e85 is its higher octane
fo the upgrade kit i would assume it ould include new fuel lines and gaskets, along with bigger injectors and fuel pump. thats about it to get you running right.
I'd do it in a heartbeat if I knew for sure my fuel system could handle it and I had a good E85 map. Walbro hasn't certified their pumps to handle E85, although they probably can. The big issue is with E85 and stock injectors. More fuel is needed and there's a chance of leaning the system out under full boost if the injectors or fuel pump can't keep up.
Once I get back, if my fuel system has enough overhead(enough injectory duty cycle left) I will be making an E85 map for my H6 TT setup. Ahh, the power of race gas daily on pump Time will tell on the lines but I am really not that worried. Ben
100+ Octane & cheaper than the alternatives - I've experimented with running a 30/70 mixture of E85 to 92 Octane. It seemed to be a bit more power, but hard to tell for sure.
