i posted this on a different forum but nobody can answer the question or even attemped to. I’m having a dilemma on which engine set-up to use, I wanted to see if there are others out there who have more knowledge and experience that can answer this question. I have done some research but not the info I’m looking for. I’m debating on an EJ20 with a stroker kit (2.67l) and GT35R; or the STI EJ257 with the GT35R. Form what I have grouped together; the EJ22 has a stronger block between the three which threw me off track. What my main concern is which one will be most reliable and not cause problems all the time. and if I go with the EJ20, will the STI 6 speed tranny fit that block?

If you want reliable power, go with a complete factory engine (with forged internals) -- ie, the ej257 -- as opposed to some sort of frankenstein build.

    ej257, or a JDM 207, NOT the ej205

Certain generations of Legacy 2.2T were closed-deck. If you can find one of those, build it. Forged internals + that = massive power potential.

Does anyone know if that's what Fuji's running?

Yep, what WOTVs said. EJ257 with forged pistons and maybe stronger rods while you're at it. "Stroker kits" are iffy, as I don't know any reputable places that make them off the shelf. The EJ22T is strong, but good luck finding them these days. You have to find one of the few Legacy turbo blocks still in existance, or find one of the few Legacy turbo cars for sale. Both are rare. The EJ22T with a phase I crankshaft and rods, and custom pistons can be stroked to 2.35L. But at that point, you would have been better off just getting the EJ257 with forged bits. The EJ205 is a waste of your time. The EJ207, while somewhat rare, is as strong as the EJ257, but it had forged pistons from the factory I believe. Don't quote me on that though.

GT35R isn't as easy as just tossing a new motor and turbo in and going. You have to think about your transmission, you have to look at your fueling situation. Alot of other factors are involved.

Yeah, it is what Fuji is running. He'll tell you all about it, all you have to do is say "EJ22T" within 25 feet of him.

I second stroker kits being iffy. Going much beyond the stoke of a 2.5 is going to be cause for concern, as your piston speeds start to go through the roof. Couple that with subaru motors being extremely hard on rod bearings, and you have yourself in a tough situation. You end up being RPM limited, and going anything past stock redline will cause trouble.

Factory forged pistons are stronger than cast, but they still are not capable of what the aftermarket is. Factory forged pistons are usually made out of 4032 aluminum instead of the 2618 T6 that most of the aftermarket uses. The 4032 isn't as strong, but they can run tighter tolerances for low noise with it.

The newer GDB rods are quite a bit stronger than the older rods due to the bolted cap, vs the older stud and nut design. They seem to be able to take what a 35R can dish out, with proper tuning, but it is at the upper echelon of their capability.

They are around now and again. Most of them are going to be 120k miles+ since they only came in the 91-94 legacy sports. They pop up on bbs.legacycentral.org here and there. I have an extra but im hanging onto it for a while unless there is an offer i cant refuse ;)

As for the gearbox, any EJ gearbox will bolt up to an EJ motor. The only difference is at one point (not sure when, somewhere around 2002) they went from a 4 bolt mounting style to an 8 bolt. An 8 bolt gearbox will slide right onto a 4 bolt block. The only thing you have to modify is the starter lower mount, 4 bolts use a stud on the lower where the 8 bolts have a through hole.
This means you have to drill out and tap the lower hole to an M12 so you can use a bolt.
You also have to enlarge the lower starter hole to accomidate the M12
Some people have drilled/tapped a hole into their bellhousing also.

^^^ I have a ej257 that has been ripped down to get ready for a rebuild in the FS area. Just needs the standard cleanup, bearings and pistons.

I have an ej22t shortblock sitting in my garage next to a jdm d16 longblock. If the owners don't claim them soon, they'll both be up for sale ;) *cough*nick*cough*josh*.

Go with Russ' ej257. It's a proven and reliable setup, plus, like he said, it's ready to be split and built. Price is good too.
