Ok, I recently blew the head gaskets on my EJ25. Before I even bought this car I knew I wanted to eventually do a turbo build/ swap on it. Blowing the headgaskets is the perfect excuse to go ahead and do it.

Ok, I just got done talking to Piddster about some things, and I have a lot better Idea of what i think I want to do now.

I'm thinking use the EJ22T short block, and the ej25 heads and intake manifold. I'll build a custom Up-pipe to go to a TD04l turbo. I want to run a FMIC, so that's obviously all custom piping. And all custom 3inch exhaust. I am still not certain on injectors. Some say my 2.5 injectors are the same as the STI pinks, others say I need something else, does anyone know for sure?

As for management, my friend suggested using MAF Translator with a good AF meter and MAP sensor. That puts me at about $760ish for managment. this management seems very user friendly and has lots of features. He also suggested I use a GM boost control Solenoid ($60 dealer part from the typhoo/cyclone blazers of the early 90's) to electronically control boost. The nice thing about the MAF Translator is I could apparenly tell it that I want a certain AFR and PSI at any given RPM, and the computer would figure out how it needs to adjust the fuel curve to get the desired affect.

I would hope to begin withrunning around 10psi on this setup, and once I knew everything was going correctly, I would eventually turn it up to the 15-16psi range.

Thoughts on this setup/idea? Has anyone here run the MAF translator management?

td04 seems too small for FMIC imo
if going FMIC, get a bigger turbo

this has been madly debated. i personally havent come up with an answer. remember he is going to to be using a bigger engine than a 2.0 as well

I had a TD05 16 on a FMIC and it worked just fine, but I didnt have any non $2000 TMIC options. TD04h 13 seems kinda small though for that.

The TD04 is kindof small for what you are doing. If you just want to run a TD04, why not boost a 2.2L N/A like AWDImprezaL did? It'll cost you less, and will likely last a while. If you are going to mess around with a 2.2T block, you might as well go big or go home. Those things will handle gobs of power, and you'd be silly not to put forged pistons in it.

If you plan on sticking with stock bottom end on a 22T hybrid, I would at least run a VF34. Lag would be minimal, since you have a little more displacement, the VF34 was never really known for being laggy on a 2.0L. And with the 2.5 heads your CR will be bumped up a bit, giving you a little more low end grunt.

Yeah, exactly what Stat said. The reason I was thinking of the TD04 is because they are very easy and cheap to find, and for now, this is being done on a budget. What is the VF34 off of, is that the STI turbo? I don't want to go too crazy atm, because I'm going to be babying my current 5spd as it is.

Yes, teh VF34 was an STi turbo. Good to about 300whp on an aggressive tune, but you could easily make about 250-270 at the wheels on it.

Ok, well I picked up my ej22t longblock today, So I guess this will probably be turning into my build thread. I've got to get my car over to the garage and get the 2.5 pulled out of that. Hopefully I can get that started this weekend.

Well StatGSR and I started pulling my ej22t apart tonight. We had to use some interesting techniques, but after finding a breaker bar that was long enough, it wasn't too bad.

Here's what we found, nothing too bad.

The only problem I see is that FRAM filter...motors probably toasted lol

well we got some serious work done today. The motor is out, and both motors are pretty much stripped to the short block. I'll probably order up the head gaskets, and repaint and fix my turbo X-memeber. Here's some pics

Well update time: I got my heads back from the machine shop, I just got my oil/water pump yesterday. I still need to drill/tap my heads and then the motor can go back together. I went with the ACT clutch. Tonight I got my FMIC all figured out, and it's pretty much ready to go. I am also working on the dash and HVAC relocation, but I'm not quite done yet. Here's the FMIC pics:

    Update:

The car is Wired! My subie wiring god of a friend (aka Chux on the boards) wired the standalone last week, everything is basically ready to go, I just need to hook up the GM boost control Solenoid that I just got.

Ok, so here's an important lesson for you. WRX STUFF IS NOT A SIMPLE BOLT ON! I ended up buying full aftermarket exhaust for a 97-01 WRX. The uppipe barely hits the bottom of the passenger side head. The bigger issue is the fact that the stock WRX turbo's outlet goes straight into the TB. So, I got the stock TD04 apart and rotated the housing to face about a 2 O'clock direction. I got the uppipe mock up done, but then my welder died.

    Here's some pics:

    Engine back in
    [IMG]

Battery relocation: I used 2 kicker distribution blocks, one for the engine bay end, and one for all the grounds in the trunk. I think this made for a nice clean looking installation. Oh, and don't worry, I'm not using that battery, I'm gonna pick up a closed/sealed battery. Either an optima or a stinger.

I decided to relocate my Hvac controls, cause it was the perfect place for my gauges. This was kinda a PITA, but worked out well in the end.

Here is where I mounted the zetronics LCD. I was not to happy to discover that I have to buy the EGT and boost sensors for it seperately...So until I have $200ish to drop on those 2 sensors, this thing is virtually worthless...

And here's my friend's (Deride on the board) T-leg in my garage. We were putting 3" TBE exhaust on it. I was hoping that having a running T-leg next to it would motivate my car to get it's self running...it didn't work :-(

But, now that the hardest part (as far as I'm concerned) is done!!! Thanks Chux, my links and zetronics are wired!

And finally, this is my uppipe I was ready to finish up when my welder crapped out, and I got angry and drove my truck over a tercel.

So that's where my car sits. I'm bringing my welder into the shop today and hopefully I'll have it fixed soon so I can finish all my pipework.

I got a lot of stuff done this weekend, here's the picture worthy stuff:

    IC Piping

    Hot Side

    Cold Side

And the ECU and Wideband. It fit nicely into the stock ecu spot, with some minor adjustments of course.

I'm still shooting for a mid week start up so I can hopefully have it on the cruise, but that's only going to happen if everything goes right...so it's doubtful.

Pretty straight forward. There's a distribution block where the battery used to be, and I hooked everything thing went to the battery into that block (Ie: The Fuse Box, Starter, and Alternator). Then I ran 2 gauge battery cable through the interior of the car. There is a Big fuse right by the battery in case something causes a short (fuses blows, and my car doesn't burn down). Then It hooks to the battery. The negative side goes from the battery to another distribution block. From that block I ran 4 grounds, 1 to each corner of the trunk. The grounds are bolted to bolts that were flipped upside down and had the head welded to the floor. I contemplated running a ground all the way to the engine compartment, but deemed it unneeded.

^^^ Sounds like I'd do if I were doing a battery relocation. Excessive. I like. :D

The 2 gauge sounds a little small tho, IMHO.

^I'm pretty sure you being there brought the brain count up to 1.5, up from my normal .5 brains. I got A LOT of stuff done last night. Turbo is in, all the lines are in, vacuum lines all routed (besides the BCS lines) exhaust is on, and all the IC piping is clamped on. Were getting close. If I am lucky enough to be able to talk to chux/and or piddster today, I could be running (or trying) by tonight or tomorrow
