I was watching a vid on Streetfire.net and they had a skyline racing around that was equipped with some sort of automatic or electronic silencer in the muffler. Does anyone know anything about these? Prices, brands, quality? It looked like it was a flip of a switch or maybe it automatically opened at a certain RPM. Looked very nice and the difference in sound was incredible. My neighbors absolutely HATE when I start my car in the garage at night or early AM....the whole neighborhood wakes up. I'd like to be a bit more civil around people I have to see everyday.
I think that is like a butterfly valve that you can open or close.. there are mechanical ones or electronic ones I think... in Minnesota for daily drivers it aint so crash hot due to corrsion on teh valve body... I think maybe places like Jeggs, JC WHitney or Summit Racing maybe... http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch.asp?N=115+%2D101834&D=%2D101834 here is a whole page with a variety of them...
I looked at those and they are the same concept of course, but the one I"m thinking of opened and closed in a circular motion. It was nothing I've seen before. I'm trying to find the video again with a close-up shot of this.
we have these on the boat. it's basicly a 3" slip joint y pipe. the open outlet cutout has a butterfly valve in it. it runs on a little 12v motor. jeggs has them for sale.
i have heard and read about these before. the think the circular motion one is made by apexi. and i have also heard that hks made them too. i think i remember the apexi one uses the exhaust or engine rpms to open and close. the hks is electronic. i think? from memory anyways. then they also have ones for cars with side exhaust too! those are hot too
Woohoo, remote exhaust cutouts. That's more of a hillbilly mod, not too common on subarus. Watch where you put it, it can vent everything directly under your car, whoch might make you a bit lightheaded... It's not a silencer, its a loudener. I don't think it will work for your needs unless you plan on buying a quieter exhaust to go with it.
U somb*tch, I am from the outskirts of duluth ya know...so I'm a redneck by default. :marlboro: Yeah, the y-pipe butterfly valve is nothing I'd ever consider, but this silencer I seen on the skyline was hawt!
Thats wha ti'm saying its not a silencer... Its a LOUDENER. He's running his normal exhaust when its quiet and the cutout when its loud. You need a quiet exhaust to start with in order to do this.
right....don't need it louder, it already sounds like a jet.... arghh, wish I could find this video again....
im not sure what this is but i seen a vid as well of a 3kgt having that stock. would it possibly make u slower?
slower? Sure, probably lose a few ponies, but that's why the silencer I'm trying to find is so attractive....automatically opens when hitting a certain rpm or being able to hit a switch and having it open!? that would be very cool.
there are mufflers with a 3" 3 bolt flange on a straight passthrough. you have the baffled chambers going out through the exhaust tip, than you have the electric cutouts on the straight passthrough. you trip it with a boost switch. http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stor...fier=&categoryId=13983&parentCategoryId=10265 http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stor...fier=&categoryId=41794&parentCategoryId=11529
I think I may have seen you today on Shady Oak road around 3:30ish. If that's the case, I can see why you want something like this, lol.
I think that's it. Yes!!! and I have an Apexi exhaust so it will fit no prob....It opens and closes with exhaust pressure....but it's $150 The ATS was developed as a high performance evolution to the standard tail pipe silencers available in the market today. While many people enjoy the power gains of a racing exhaust on the track, often times these systems require a silencer to be installed in the tip for use on the street. While sound output can be dramatically lowered using a non-adjustable silencer, unfortunately response and power tend to suffer due to increased exhaust gas restriction. The ATS (Active Tail Silencer) uses the same active valve technology as the PS Revolution exhaust system. The spring loaded valve is engaged and disengaged based upon exhaust gas pressure. This allows for effective sound suppression for the street, without the power loss under high load. Dyno tests have proven power levels to be nearly identical to an exhaust using no silencer at all. :yumyum:

So right now I have the Apexi GT catback, Megan Racing DP, and a gutted UP. My car is pretty crazy loud without the silencer in. I think its kind of fun to rip with the exhaust just screaming out behind you, but a lot of the time people in the neighborhood and passengers aren't too kean on the noise. How does this system compare to just putting the sleeve silencer in? Also, what is the difference at WOT from the system without the silencer? Ideally I want something as quite as the system with the silencer when I'm not driving hard and then let the thing blow the windows out of buildings when I get on it. Anybody go to Firestone with this?
i've only seen the thing on muscle cars and boats. our boat has a 454 magnum in it w/ through the prop exhaust. the cutouts are right after each header collector and go straight out the back of the hull. when cut out, its amazingly %$#@!%$#@!%$#@!%$#@!ing loud, when through the prop its very very quiet.
I should be picking up the Apexi ATS here within a couple weeks, I'll throw a review up after installation
We installed a manual silencer for a customer that went inbetween the downpipe and the midpipe. It was basically a butterfly valve that could be opened or closed using a cable in the cab. However it caused some big problems just driving down the road. Sure it made it quieter than stock but the cruise control was using 70% throttle to keep it moving at 65mph. So it needed to be cracked a little... Same customer bought an 06 sti and we did the active silencer that apexi makes. It seems to work pretty well... but I had a hard time tuning it. Especially under light/mid loads the car was very unpredictable because of the variation in flow. Shane might add some brand names to this post later... because I can't exactly remember. Steve-o
Ya, have fun tuning the active silencers. You will be changing the load at each load site dependant on throttle. Meaning that you can have 2 different tunes for the same load point based on the silencer being open or closed. People that use the exhaust cut-out's usually run a different map for the cut-out just because it decreases the backpressure so much. Russ
Good thing I don't have to do anything with my set-up since I have an OTS cobb stg 2 map. However, I will have to change out my muffler before I go to the stg 2.5 and protune. Is a Borla Hush really that much more quiet? I've been looking at those...
