It happened this morning on my way to work. As freeway 280 began to incline before it merges into 94 eastbound, I step on the clutch, let off the gas and let off the clutch to allow the car to cruise downhill going 60 MPH. Right when I did that, my peripheral vision noticed that my brake light and my CEL light was on! WTF! Go to hell! I thought for about 5 seconds what just happened and why is my exhaust not audible anymore. I look ahead and the freeway is still rolling downhill but I'm coming to a curve. I look down again and notice my speedometer and tachometer are both at "0". YIKES! :ugh: I sit there cruising downhill coming up to a curve and think what to do next. I then realized, "WTF!?!? Go to Hell!!! My engine has turned off on its own!" So, I step on the clutch and turn the ignition key while still coasting downhill. Started right up and I was able to make the turn like nothing happened.:woot: Go to hell!!
i hope this helps...this also happened to my camry back in the days with a low battery? driving for like 10 miles then shuts off....but that's what my experience taught me...hopefully this helps if any
Who knows what it is... I just hope it doesn't happen again. The last time I've heard of this happening was Mr. Josefoods from Minneapolis who had this happen to him numerous times which caused him to take it to Morries Minnetonka Subaru to Mr. driftin240 to work on it.
Did you check to see if there are any CEL codes in memory? Maybe whatever caused it to shut off also logged a code, I'm not sure though... might be worth a shot.
Nope, no code found. I'm not super worried at the moment. It just got me off gaurd. This isn't something the dealer can duplicate either. It could be my intake... it could be my oily MAF (just oiled K&N filter last week).
does your car have remote start? if so i have heard of the remote start system activating. so it engages the starter and jamms up the engine. just an idea. good thing you had the clutch pushed in, or else you might have really freaked out.
I think pushing the clutch in to release the load on the motor freaked out the motor (light-weight pulley installed) and made it @#$%!@#$%!@#$%!@#$%! itself.
I bet the light weight pully has something to do with it, from what I've read it seems fairly common for this to happen to people with lightweight flywheels. Funny you reached down and turn the car back on, I suppose I would've been inclinde to pop the clutch, though thats probably not as good of an option, I just though that was weird.
This happened to me. Hasn't happened since. I don't know what to tell you. I was doing almost the exact same thing. Travelling southbound on Interstate 15 in San Diego, going down a hill. Put it into 5th but didn't give it any throttle, just cruising. Next thing I know the car kinda studders and the brake and CEL come on. Then about a quartermile later, the car is dead. I pull it off the road, stand there in utter confusion. Check under the hood for any loose ground wires or any smoking electrical stuff...nothing. Get back in, turn the key...it starts just fine. Like nothing ever happened.
This would happen every once in a while in my VW. I’d put in the clutch and the RPMs would drop, but it seemed like the engine couldn’t level out at idle speed and it would just stall. But the idle in that thing always sucked. Sitting at stoplights, the idle would always drop really low, almost to a stall, and then bounce back up.
The difference is, this happens while in gear at cruising RPMS. 2000+. And it's random. It doesn't happen to every car.
Fong, Hwy 280 is haunted. You've been tracked down by some bad spirits. Its a sign of "final destination". I suggest you go O-neng this weekend. You should invite all the guys here.
he's angered the Sti Gods with his imposterr vehicle.. or is it the Lesbian Goddess for desecrating the lesbian Idol...
