Ever have neighbors complain about your barking dog?

My GF has a Beagle, and she howls every once in a while when she goes outside at night to go potty. Now, the neighbors are older and they come over every once in a while to complain. The dog gets maybe two barks/howls in before I see a flashlight from the neighbors window...I mean seriously, wtf? The beagle by no means, is sitting out there for 15 or even 5 minutes before we get her back inside. Still, the neighbors bitch about it. It's so annoying.

Anyone else have any advice or experience in this realm?

    Thanks,
    - Justin K.

sit down and talk to them, crabby neighbors will just keep complaining until they feel you are meeting their needs.

Talking to them, is like clapping with one hand. They even said that she shouldn't have a beagle "in the city." Two barks...and it's the end of the world to them.

Tell them to take their hearing aids out.

I dunno. If they are that unreasonable, I'd just ignore them. Are they going to call the cops? Even if they did, do you think there would be an issue once you talked to an officer?

The only law reference that I found is that your dog can't be barking incessantly for like 10-15 minutes. I just ignore them...but they come over and want to just "let us know." They also have a little brat who has let the dog off it's leash 3 times now. It's a beagle...they take off as soon as they have freedom. So, I end up having to chase after the damn thing. :-/

lol...yeah, they've never mentioned anything about my car, which is surprising cause it ain't quiet.

I've told the little brat I don't want him touching the dog. He bent down to pet her and I was like, "yeah, don't touch the dog okay?"

I mean really, their window is open during the summer. They're gonna' hear every little thing. I should just push the panic button on my car every night for like a week at 3am...Hellas for the wakeup!!! :) See how they like the dog then!!!

if you arent doing anything illegal they cant do anything more than get upset. its a dog for christs sake! they bark. if they really are that obsessed with the situation they need to get out of the house more. sounds like our next door neighbors. they would tell me that my dog makes too much noise when she goes outside in the morning. she just barks once before she pees.... OMG A DOG BARKED AND NOW LIFE sUCKs!!!!!! id just ignore them or even call them out about their kid being on your property that sounds more illegal than a dog parking

Now if the dog barks constantly for 15 minutes, that is an issue. My neighbors dog does that. It sites their and barks at nothing. I can't get too mad at the dog since my neighbors are fat lops of ****.

Ha! They also said that they would prefer the barking to only be between 8am-8pm...what a crock!

And holster, I've said that...it's a dog, it barks!!! Most of the time, she just goes out and sniffs around and does her thing quietly, but if she get's the scent of a rabbit, she can get crazy! Then again, they're bred for hunting wabbits!!!

I've also told them that they have to give me time to go out and get her. Putting a muzzle on the dog to appease the neighbors isn't my style. I don't care if the dog barks or howls a couple times. I hear the other neighbors bassets all the time, but we don't complain. It's just lame I tell you. Old people...pfffft.

I'm sorry but if I was in the circumstance I would not bend over backwards for some pesky neighbors, it's a dog they bark, howl, yipe, etc they make all types of noises but it comes down to one thing ... it's just a dog it knows no better. Its similar to getting upset that an infant is crying, it doesn't know any better.

Every try a bark collar? They work great. We use one on our dog and it works fantastic. $40.00 at Fleet Farm. Slap it on him when he goes outside, take it off when he comes in.

The law for animal noise sounds similar to what we have down here. If you read it closely it has to bark for over 5 minutes with no breaks greater than 30 seconds or something. But if you experience that it can be grating on you even if you are a dog owner so it makes sense. The one thing I would be careful about is if you're living in an apartment/condo/townhome or are part of a homeowners association that has stricter rules than the law regarding animal noise. I'm guessing the reason they complain is because the howl startles them but it doesn't sound like an incessant barking issue.

I had to talk to my neighbors about their dog last fall. I work from home when I'm not traveling, and though I can't hear squat through the walls of the townhome I can hear things through the front door. Their dog would bark at their front door for 15-20 minutes straight (without 30 second breaks even!) with its little-dog screech (I wouldn't call the sound it makes "barking"). It would do this anytime anything outside made a noise, and it could even hear me in my place whenever I'd make a noise near my door. At times it would go on for nearly an hour. After three months of this I couldn't get any work done because it was driving me nuts so when they came home I went and had a chat with them. At first they were a-holes about it telling me they had a right to own a dog in their house and blah blah blah. I wasn't telling them to get rid of the dog, but letting it bark all day is bad for it. Those little dogs suffer from anxiety and that's why they bark so much when alone. Crating is one option, but just leaving the radio on in the back of the house so it has something to listen to is all it takes. They finally realized I was only trying to keep things peaceful between us (and because our association rules are very strict about excessive noise of any kind at any hours of the day) and now I rarely ever hear the dog bark. When they're away they have gates to keep the dog from getting near the foyer and it generally sits in the living room listening to the radio all day.

Obviously not the same situation as yours by any means. Down here everyone has a tiny dog that they treat like a human baby and it drives me a little crazy. I love dogs, but only really hunting dogs. I had a retriever growing up. The dogs people keep down here need to watch out for birds of prey taking them out and that's just wrong.

I have a beagle and a coon hound, the neighbors love us ;)

Honestly, I don't let our dogs bark for more than a minute or two, the neighbors love both of our dogs though.

Dogs bark, cats meow, and birds chirp. You should go talk to them everyday and tell them that the birds in their backyard are chirping, and just wanted to let them know.

take the dog out more often. 10 times a day for like 2 weeks and make sure it barks. THen... after 2 weeks, go back to your regular walking routine. the sudden change of 10 compared to 3-4 times a day will make huge difference.

    OR

    Buy another beagel. LOL

If it is after 8pm, why don't you just put the thing on a leash, go out there with it for 2 minutes while it does its thing, and bring it right back in. Instead of leaving it on its own outside.

I'd be pretty furious about that. That could kill your dog. Maybe some screaming at the parents about trespassing is in order next time that happens.

It's possible. A lot of time and patience required, though. I LOL at all the people who get Beagles because they're cute and have no idea what they're getting into.

Tell them they shouldn't have old people who don't like noise in the city.

I've trained my Beagle to kill on command.

Bunnies, baby birds, squirrels, watch the f-out.

They can be trained, but they can and will be very stubborn when they want to be. You have to be very persistent with them, they are nothing like a lab or retriever.

I feel the same way, I see so many people with beagles that are not trained at all, and didn't know what they were getting themselves into.

Wait. Their kid goes on your property to unleash the dog and let it loose when it barks? Is that what I'm hearing? I'd tell your neighbors that the next time you see their kid roaming around your yard messing with your stuff, you're going to call child protective services and inform them that there is a stray child in your yard.

I had 2 beagles growing up .. thankfully nobody complained about them howling (in MA, your house is usually a lot further away from your neighbor's even in a small town) but they really are a handful. We gave them away to family members about a year after we got them, because nobody had the time to care for those dogs. They are extremely needy!

There is a dog next door here that yaps and yaps and yaps at everything, all day long while he is outside ... I don't have the stones to complain about him to the neighbor. But wow .. I wish I did.

    My situation

I'm in a somewhat similar situation, although i'm on the opposite end. Where my neighbors have 3 terriers that like to bark non stop at anything that moves constantly all day, including me or any of my guests that happen to be in my back yard. They are just now starting to use bark colars and actually do some training to curve their barking obsession. I'm sure my neighborhood will be thanking me for having a few words with them. The cops have been called on them numerous times before I moved in next door.

So my neighbor is of course at the extreme end where as your dog sounds like a normal dog to me. I'd ignore them as much as you can. I have a dog that is a guard dog and only barks when needed but as others have said its a dog they will bark/howl and such. Your neighbors can't do anything about the beagle if it isn't constant and all the time.

Good luck with your pesky neighbors

I say turn on some really loud hard rock music while your dog goes to the potty... give em something else to complain about... either that or tell them you dont appreciate the noise they make when they host the swingers party... oooh ooh or you could put an ad on craigslist advertising their house for a free for all swingers event ;)

    lol! good stuff...

I have The Cobb tbe...so it's not too loud, but loud when it opens up! ;)

Readymix: The leash currently is long enough for the beagle to get almost into their yard. When I'm in the garage I just leave the gate to the backyard open so she can come into the garage and sniff around when she wants, and so I can keep an eye on her. So if the neighbor is outside, he may try to walk up to her and pet her, but he doesn't technically wander around her yard.

Dream: She has a bark collar for her, and most of the time at night, she'll use it. She puts it on when she goes out, and takes it off when she comes back in.

The thing with the beagle is that sometimes when you tell her to do her thing, she just doesn't. She finds a scent and just roams around the backyard, so I just wait until I hear a bark, and then go get her.

Basically, we're just gonna' ignore them and keep our ears open for when the beagle starts barking, and then go get her. But the flashlight from the window thing is just annoying. I'm gonna' go out there naked next time and make the dog bark...then they'll have something to stare at...good ole' Captain Winky!!!

One of my neighbors 2 apartments away has the single most annoying pomeranian EVER. They leave it outside to bark literally for 30-60 minutes at a time at all hours of the morning and night. I seriously wish that dog would disappear. I've complained about it to the management along with several other people in my building and they haven't done anything.
