I'm thinking of switching from verizon and a original droid to sprint and either the evo 4g or the epic 4g. Anyone have opinions on the phones? I like to txt a lot and love the droid physical keyboard. I also like to teather my phone and use pandora alot as well as browse the forums.
Love my Epic. Bought it for the keyboard, but found myself using it less and less with the Swype on-screen keyboard, it is really nice. It has a marginal CPU/GPU speed advantage over the Evo. It is a little large thickness-wise, but I like the 4" screen size over the 4.3" of the Evo. Also, AMOLED on the Epic vs. LCD on the Evo. The Epic looks amazing. Evo has better support in the community as far as custom ROMs (CyanogenMod being the big key here), but the Epic is catching up now that 2.2 is available for it this week.
I love my Evo. Got it the day it came out, and never looked back. Got a Seidio hard case for it, and its survived alot of abuse.
Thanks for tbe opinions guys. Yea I hate the droids on screen keyboard that's why I'm leary to get a phone without a physical keyboard
I felt the same way - but this is the keyboard on Samsung Android handsets by default - it really rocks. http://swypeinc.com/product.html It can be installed on non-Samsung handsets too if you're ... resourceful.
Wish I could get swype. Stupid not-open beta. . Anyway, the stock keyboard is quite good on the EVO. If that doesn't cut the mustard, there are a ton of free and pay keyboard apps. Swype and Swiftkey seem to be the winners. Been happy with the EVO myself. Came from an iPhone about a month ago, and am still impressed with the availability and flexibility of apps and phone functionality. No question, in terms of volume of sailes, android is going to pummel iOS in the next few years.
yea biggest thing im worried about is ive always had a physical keyboard and i dont like the feel of touch screen meybe its something i could get used to.
Yep, you typically trade screen size for keyboard. I wanted the screen size. Frankly, soft keyboards keep getting better, and will continue down that path. With a little practice, haptic feedback and word prediction basically make typing a breeze on any android smartphone. I was never much impressed with the iOS keyboard implementation, but have been increasingly happy with the android keyboard (as well as associated apps).
Only thing to be aware of is the battery life isn't great on the EVO. This can be mitigated with some tweaking, but I've heard most folks don't get more than a days life out of the box with moderate talk time. I don't talk much, and but use mine regularly for email/text/interwebs/etc, and get battery time similar to my iPhone 3GS. Your mileage may vary.
I went from the Iphone to an Evo and love it. It has a cheaper data plan, it's more flexible with memory and the general OS, and you can get around the low battery life by buying one of these... http://www.seidioonline.com/product-p/bacy35hev4-bk.htm . Last night I was still at 50% when I went to bed and had been using it all day . As for the EPIC, depends on the keyboard, I think that's the biggest difference so go play with them at the sprint store and have some fun. On a random side note, I work at the MOA and the kiosk on the East side, 3rd floor will usually give you a decent deal if you ask him about it. I think his name is Billy. Tell him Kelly sent you up there and he should hook you up.
the biggest difference is the physical keyboard, if you're like me and you have clumsy fingers, a full physical keyboard helps
Battery life is a big one I hear time and time again and was the big motivator for my decision to not get an android device this time around. Since last time I charged, sitting at 45% battery after 3 hours 32 minutes of usage (including 1 hour 31 minute talk time) and 1 day 21 hours standby time on the iphone4. I am really hoping this kind of battery life can make it into the next gen of android devices because I dislike being boxed into the apple world.
Same here, I just started looking for it and found out it's no longer available due to some crazy copyright warez type gibbberish
yeah, I haven't been able to find the apk file since I got my phone. Btw, thanks Kelly, my old man is quite happy to know there is an extended battery for the Evo, he is getting old... and forgets he needs to charge his smart phone more than his last flip phone. haha
Email me @ [email protected] and ill reply with the apk. I also have the apk file for the gingerbread keyboard if anybody wants that.
Gingerbread: http://www.mediafire.com/?nw38f24jx4898ax Swype: http://www.mediafire.com/?tm4ny9sxbxv7m63
Like Nuke said, give them a try back to back. I'm still faster with a keyboard than with swype (5 years with a tactile keyboard vs 2 months with swype) but it's not any better or worse imho. I can swype just fine (unless I'm drunk lol). If the G2 wasn't impossible to open and handle I would have bought that over the fascinate, but other factors like size, screen, ergonomics, etc helped me make a similar decision.
Haha! I love the bigger battery (maybe I'm getting old), it protects the camera too As for Dreamis, I already found the apk file. But what version is that? I found 1.60.36.8214 on kickasstorrents and installed it and so far so good.
Gingerbread is supposed to make some improvements in the area of battery life. Also from using both the Evo and the Epic I think the Evo feels better built and not as much cheep plastic. Keep in mind that Samsung has yet to show that it will update their phones to the latest version of android in a reasonable amount of time. Amoled does bring the contrast though, i think its likely the better screen. my 2c. oh and a FACT: SWYPE PWNS STOCK ANDROID KEYBOARD
Also, the swype beta just opened up to more users, so if you want to get the updates real-time -- go ahead and sign up.
HAHAHA yeah, that's why I get emails from you that say "do it" and put a link to the keyboard download.
bump this dead thread. the evo shift is now out so thats what im looking at over both the evo and the epic. anyone have a evo shift and would like to share the experiance.
just based off some reading ive done the epic seems to fit me better then the evo or the evo shift just because it has a full size keyboard and the 1ghz proccessor where the ****ft is only 800
shift may be 800mhz but it's second gen snap dragon and can do what the 1ghz can. also base off the hard ware as the g2, it can be oc'd to 1.8ghz right now (and stable), undervolted. battery life is a bit better.
yea i would need to root mine ive never done it so if u can do it let me know and ill have you show me how haha.
Some xda guy is almost done with the windows base software to root and install recovery for the evo shift, so you don't have to go through some mumbo jumbo stuff. as for the regular evo, it's been done for a while and all the info is on xda
ok cool thanks ill just have to decide if i want the epic or the shift now as ive kinda narrowed it down to that. is anything coming out soon thats going to blow these outa the water thats not goin to cost a fortune?
http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/06/sprint-announcing-nexus-s-4g-evo-3d-and-evo-view-tablet-at-cti/ latest i read
thanks for the link. another problem i always face is the when should i upgrade seems like you can never win haha you get the phone u think is great then a month later a new phone comes out that makes it look like a antique haha.
