ar: 2001 Subaru Forester S Modifications: None Problem Description: When I turned on my car this morning, it was exceptionally loud, and the sound came from the middle of the car, rather than the back. Recent Maintenance: None
probably a loose bolt in your catalytic converter. or just a nice chunk of a hole in your exhaust. you wanted a modded exhaust right?
I had an 02 TS that developed a rusted out hole in the midpipe exactly as you describe. I'd probably find the hole and see which direction it's pointing. If down towards the road, I'd probably leave it for a while if it wasn't obnoxious. If up towards the floor pan I'd have it fixed. Just my take. On a related item as inferred above, I've driven five different N/A Subarus with years ranging from 99 to 2007 with the EJ25. Every single one of them had (or has) an exhaust rattle, usually heat shields.
Apparently the muffler's connection to the exhaust pipe cracked because of all the mudding I've been doing.
Every Subaru has annoying heat shield rattles until you remove them! Not that I'm advocating removing them...jus sayin
Probably going to go to an exhaust shop, and see if they can weld it back together. I'm not hoping for anything, probably going to have to get a new exhaust, as the connection is severely ****ed.
I'd love a catback, but once claji reports me to the police, I'll be fined up the ass, and won't have any money to purchase a Catback.
do some research and check fitments. im sure you can find a OEM one for not to expensive that isnt stupid loud like my melon launcher is.
I had the same problem with a old legacy i had. The rear flange rusted off the cat. I looked like it was going to cost 3 figures to fix... but I managed to get it done cheaper. I got a split flage and new donut gasket for under 20$. The flange on the cat rusts off but there is enough of a weld bead left for the split flange to hold. The split flange i got was made out of rod bent to fit around the pipe with flats the holes were in. Its a universal product i got it at oriellys auto. Look under your car for the bolts with springs on them. That will be where the problem is.
Just to add, I would definitely get it fixed, especially with cold weather right around the corner. It is not safe or healthy to have an exhaust leak right under the passenger compartment. Exhaust fumes = Any exhaust shop or experienced welder should be able to fairly easily weld it back together, for fairly cheap. If you want a louder exhaust for cheap, you could also have them remove a resonator and weld a pipe in its place.
