    Hi all,

Long story short, in the attempts to do a data back up of my old (and now dead) computer, both of my external hard drives have ceased to function.

the G-Drive Mobile is going to be covered by warranty, so I will be sending it in beginning of next week for product replacement.

My other external, which is a WD Passport (1Tb), apparently has a broken USB port.

I take very good care of my belongings, especially my car, gadgets and technology, etc., and I have no idea how this could have happened. I used both right before the computer died, and had no issues then.

My concern is that over the past 10 years, I have done extensive traveling, and have over 24k photos on these externals. I thought I was being extra safe with 2 drive, but now I'm up a creek... I have no reason to believe the actual hard drive in the WD is bad, just a broken/loose USB port. It is still at the Apple store waiting to be picked up, but I am very interested in trying to pull my information off of there before I try for warranty or anything else.

Do you have any recommendations of a trustworthy place that would be able to help with that?

To do the complete data back up from the old computer, I did end up buying a 3rd external (Seagate Backup Plus 1 TB portable). So hopefully that will save what was on the computer. As stated before though, all of my photos and music is on the other two drives.

I am not great with technology, basics sure, but this is already out of my comfort zone. Any guidance is always greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It's always the case, pull the drive and put it into another case.

If there is data on that drive, you may not get it back... You might be better off getting a different case and swapping the drive over.

    Thanks guys, I appreciate it.

Is the rehousing something that is pretty simple to do? I really don't want to break/screw up anything that could put my photos and music at risk. Music I can rebuild a collection, but photos, you know how it is. My stomach is in knots everytime I think about the chance of losing them.

Not really. I just requires a screwdriver. Just don't force anything and you'll be fine.
