So I'll be attempting to replace my stock TD04 on my recently-purchased 06 WRX next weekend (I know, I should be upgrading to a vf39 but I haven't seen any for sale and I'm trying to pretend like I don't need it...) but since this will be my first time attempting anything like this I've got a couple questions:

    1) I'm planning to replace all of the stock clamps with new worm clamps. Is there anything else that I should plan on replacing? My WRX has 100k miles on it and I'm trying to figure out whether it'd be a good idea to have a set of silicone vacuum lines handy or anything similar to replace a part that might be rotted out and breaking.

    2) This car is my daily and while replacing the turbo seems pretty intimidating right now, it also seems do-able and like something that I should learn to do. If I only have a day to get this done, are there any major pitfalls that I should be especially wary of, (i.e. stuff that's going to make me wish I'd just paid someone else to do it)?

    3) Is it stupid to try and clamp off the hoses without draining the coolant or should I just drain it and avoid the mess?

As always, the youtube videos and forum guides make it sound simple, but that was my exact mindset when previously trying to swap out my front-right axle on my last Impreza without air tools (which I would have gladly paid someone else $100 in exchange for the pleasure of battling unholy amounts of rust over a weekend filled with PB-blasting, broken tools, and cursing).

I'm basically just trying to figure out whether this falls into the category of "relatively straight-forward, you can figure it out on your own without messing too much stuff up" or if it's more in the realm of, "There's some stuff that's likely gonna go wrong, you'll probably wanna grab someone who knows what they're doing"

For anyone who's done this before - help a newbie out!

Your turbo inlet hose is probably ripped or getting close to ripping near the turbo if it's the stock plastic one. It rips near the clamp. Inspect it well if you don't plan on replacing. I bought a gimmick racing one and it was exactly that. Fitment and quality was very poor. I needed a lot of extra clamps to fight vac leaks. I had a aps on my old car, it was a bear to install but never any issues. eBay ones are trash. Maybe someone can recommend an aftermarket one that doesn't have fitment issues and is easy to install.

Get new gaskets and use either a nickel or copper based anti seize on the studs and bolts attaching the down pipe and up pipe. Use new copper washers on the banjo bolts.

The bolts on the down pipe and up pipe will be rusted and fight you. I'm not sure how the pcv and crankcase breather route on a 255 but there may be a plastic coupler coming off a breather port fitting on the block that will be very brittle at this point. All the rubber hoses will be brittle in the cold.

Where is the best place to buy replacement rubber hoses if they break? Is autozone/napa stocked with that kind of stuff?

There are 2 banjo bolts in the oiling system that have screen filters in them. They can be cleaned, otherwise MSRP is $16.47ea, #14445AA090. I've got 2 here at Miller Hill, and Morries MTKA has 2 as well.
