I have a 2005 STi tranny that i'm considering selling because of the hassle of putting it into my car. The downside to the tranny is that it's more than likely gonna need a center differential which is quite a pretty penny. I'm not 100% sure that it needs it, but it was binding pretty badly. The fluid was clean, with no metal debris. Came out at 27k miles.
What if I wanted to do away with the center diff altogether and block it off and run it in a mid-engine RWD configuration?
I'd need someone that can weld really well, and someone that has time and some engineering experience to pull it off. And more than likely someone that has a totaled wrx or turbo'd RS with a good turbo crossmember they were willing to part with, along with alot of other stuff...... ....so essentially, not gonna happen. But I can dream, right? Oh to win the lottery.
hahaha...just saw a wrecked and completly stripped wrx in Fridley if you would like mo info. But dreams I'm sure will do for now.
Yur crazy Jason. At first I thought you were going to get rid of the PPG setup and I was gonna have to kill you. I can't weld aluminum that good, and I haven't done it in a while either. It would be funny if the block plate from a FWD 5-spd would fit on there. Then there wouldn't be any need for welding.
Here's teh deal. I haven't the money to do a project like that right now. If I did, I'd be all over something like that. I've thought alot of it out in my head though. It would involve cutting the rear passenger compartment area floorboard and seating support out completely and welding in the turbo crossmember. Then after fitting the motor in there, you'd need to cut the rear floor out to accomodate the tranny. A new crossmember for the tranny would be needed. Not sure if you could just modify a rear AWD differential brace or not. I would assume that as long as the transmission sat near the same plane as it would if mounted normally, then the axles would meet up with the rear hubs just fine since the rear wheel base should be about the same as the front. Speedometer and such shouldn't change since we'd keep the same wheel dimensions and tire sizes. Although I'd probably run a 11" wide by 17" diameter wheel in the rear for super JDM #1 dorifto mega sensastion action. The easier part is figuring out how to mount an intercooler and radiator. This would likely be best done by welding the rear doors shut, or at least louvering them for ventilation and mounting the intercooler and radiator in one of the rear doors. Or you could run some thick hightemp hose to the front for the radiator and roof mount the intercooler...both options would be final thoughts though. Getting the engine in and the tranny in would be the hard part. Then sealing everything up in the car. Some kind of trick metal cover with hinges would be sweet. Eitherway, I don't see how it would be impossible. That is the way the Saker is configured, EJXX mid mounted with a tranny modded for FWD but connected to the rear wheels instead. All the other stuff is details. And just think of how awesome the sounds would be if they were IN the car....glorious noise!
This would be quite the amazing plan. FYI: Fuji has a turbo x-member for sale from a Tleg. Just out of curiousity what are you looking to get for this tranny? I know that there are a few places in japan (tanannebebane? auto services) which sell replacement center diffs for both 5spd and 6spd which will allow all of the power generated to get transfered to the rear wheels. This tranny might be the perfect start to a RWD subie. although from what I have heard from the Team Orange cars the standard subaru diffs dont hold up well to 300hp going striaght to the rear end...
Yes, but I don't want to run it to a rear diff. The transmission would essentially BE the rear diff. The engine would be mounted behind the front seats.
The part number for the center diff is 38913AA160 and the club price (including tax) is 2092.74. You're still ahead of the usual going price I see which is around 3k.
That would require me to buy a 914...which I don't have the scratch for right now. But I would love to do a 914 Suby swap.
See, before, it's playa hatin' y0 Now it's straight hating!!! Damn, only if I had the $mulah$...i hate my tranny
Incase you all that PM'd me don't know, the trans in now sold to Ray. It did get shipped today Ray, but I have to get the tracking number from the shipper tomorrow.
