Hey all, My grandpa just got back from the doctor and was diagnosed with pulmatory fibrosus. They are linking this to the fact that we have pet birds. so we may be looking to find homes for three birds. one yellow parakeet, a peach faced love bird, and a african grey parrot. things arnt for sure yet, but it really sounds like they have to go, and i want to make sure they have a good home. if anyone is interested please let me know. Thanks, Martin
My cat is extremely interested. Just kidding. That really sucks Martin, hopefully this helps clear things up for her. How big is the parrot? I know someone who might be interested. Also, what kind of pricing for them?
well the African Grey is about 12-13" long. heres a wiki article on them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_grey_parrot as for pricing i do not know, that is up to my parents. Fankly I think the most important thing is to find a good home.
how old is the african gray? tell me about him/her, friendly or not etc i almost got one a few years ago, i got a quaker parrot instead. i think my mom still really wants an african gray though
I've had (still have) an African grey for 5 years and I would suggest NOT giving it to home that does not have experience with HIGH maintenance birds. Big trouble could come about if ya did....those birds are finicky.
Ruffles (the african Grey) is a around 10 years old right now. we have had her since she was about 6months old. hand fed, bred in captivity, vaccinated ect.... The bird is very cautious of new people, and new things. for example when we clean the cage out and add/change toys she is scared to go into the cage for a while. the bird has the best relationship with my dad, who can do anything to the bird, hold it upside down, put it in his jacket ect... i am sure that once it gets used to new people it will calm down.
Greys are cool but boy can they cause trouble. They are so smart. If they were not so loud I would take it for the wife. She used to watch a Grey for a friend all the time and has always had birds. Not really sure how they do with a second owner. If you run out of options let me know. I know a guy who owns a birds only store and he is great. Handles all his birds all the time. He even has a room in the back for birds that have behavior problems that people have abandoned.
Grey's are typically a one person bird. They will tolerate others, but they attach themselves to one person (like a marriage if you will). Tyson, my african is the same way around new people and new toys in her cage. She loves me and will do everything in her power to please me (tricks, talking, etc...), but doesn't like anyone else too much.....it's just a grey thing. What type is it? Timneh or Congo? IF you send the bird to a new home he/she may need therapy of some sort. 10 years with one family and the owner (your grandpa) is a long time and it could take months/years for the bird to learn to live with a new family.
Its a Congo Afrcan Grey. I know exactly what you mean about how they bond, another reason it is difficult to get rid of the bird. These birds are so smart it is rediculous. Ruffles has figured out many ways to get our attention, and seems to enjoy doing it too. mlgez, cool i will let you know how things go. i know what you mean about them being loud. although mostly with this bird its not so much the talking but the toys/cage that make the most noise.
I know someone VERY intrested in the african grey... hers died a few years back because it was an old bird.... and shes been heartbroken ever since. if it comes to that... she would be mor ethen thrilled to take the grey. But I won't say a thing to her untill you let me know... don't want to get her hopes up and crush her.
^ good to know. It sounds like on tuesday someone is coming out to meet the birds. this person is local and already owns a grey which she helped recover from behavoiral problems. there is a chance she will take all 3 birds. otherwise we are looking into the stillwater avain rescue place. they seem to be a great place which is very strict about who they will allow to adopt birds. however we havent heard back from here yet. i will let my parents know that you have someone whos very interested.
