So I've been thinking...I've got a 2005 WRX with full exhaust, VF39 and supporting mods, 30k miles, put down 242 whp at DB. And I've got the same problem we've all got, I just want to keep adding more power, more performance, more suspension, etc. I'm not sure exactly what I'll do with the car, probably just Auto X and track days at BIR. So is the STI a better platform regarding value? The transmission, bigger engine, brakes, etc have to be worth something, and it seems that trying to put comparable parts in my WRX would cost way more than just trading up to an STI. If we (that's right, I need your help) do decide to get an STI should I buy an older STI and put the extra cash into mods or stick with a 04-05 and go from there? Would it make more sense to 1) trade-in WRX so I can save money on taxes 2) sell WRX privately with mods 3) bring WRX back to stock and sell privately? I've only owned this car for about 1 year, paid about $21k and have another $3500 in mods. Send me your thoughts, offers on trade or cash as is... since gone wingless
Nice pic! Dunn Bros.:yumyum: I think that the 'mod bug' is a little damaging to the pocketbook, but on the other hand, you've already put the time and effort into making it what it is now. A wrx that would give STi's a run for the money. For Autocrossing, It is my understanding that the shorter gears of the 6 speed man. are better for autox. So an STI may be the way to go. I say, IMO, keep the car, add suspension bits and what-not as you can afford to. It will happen with the STi also...the mods that is! And Btw, who tinted your tail lights? I like!
hmmm, its a toss up in my opinion... caus you can save money and get a BBK and drop in some dang nice coilovers and be more than happy... however, the 2.5liter is a stout motor and the 6 speed with dccd is to DIE FOR. i guess if i was in your shoes... i would consider trading it in on a 07 wrx or sti before they are gone. both have the 2.5liter, revised trannies, and are more than potent. i would say trade yours in with out the mods, then put the mods on the 07 wrx and tune it, i bet you would be more than happy
Come on Chris, 10:01am is my reserved posting spot! Why you all up in my elbow room homie!!? hehe....^^^Also a good alternative, but I think he wants a STI.:dunno:
bah, STI is just higher insurance rates and more electronic jibber jabber with the heads... only thing its got is the 6 speed with DCCD at that point, hell, the 07's even have the wonderful 4 pot brakes! sorry for steppin' on toes, but i felt compelled to chime in, i am in the posting mood.
In the mood to whore...hehe, me too. Yes, 07's are ftw fo' sho'. But in the long run, to buy another DubRX would be mo' monies. He'd probably rather put the extra dough into some coilovers for the 05. Just a guess though.
That'd be me. Pain in the arS#@ to get the smooth and shinny look, had to wet sand by hand in multiple stages, then buff with compound and polish.
true, more money but i do believe they revised the tranny again... you get the extra displacement, fantastic brakes, ect... personally, if it was me, i would keep the car go big brake kit, coilovers, and get some Cusco or Kaaz LSD action going on.
But add up the price of the above upgrades and I'm at the difference in price between a used WRX and a used STI, and I still wouldn't have the STI 6 spd.
+0.5 liters + AVCS on the wrx ftw. '07 WRX gearing was slightly revised as well. The torque, even with the stock turbo, is awesome. If you're seriously thinking of trading "up," try test-driving or even riding in an '06-'07 wrx, and see what you think. I guess I'm biased, however.
Hehe. Seriously, I just personally think that the '06-'07 wrx is so well suited for daily street driving + occasional track/autox days. The torque early in the rpm band makes it seriously fun just to buzz around town, and it's still got some balls (especially with a good stage 2) on the track/autox course.
no kidding, and toss on his current mods, ie. turbo and exhaust and you could have one heck of a competitor, at that point, toss on some nice coilovers or even better springs and if possible, a nice LSD set up and you would be so golden... omg it would be rock solid. lol, i sound like a broken record.
Yeah, Andrew's got that VF39, too. You lose some low end torque, but that + exhaust is going to take a run at most stage 2 STI's.
I don't have the experience to build you an ultimate track/autox combo but, if it is gonna mostly gonna be a daily driver type car I would go STi. I like some of the flashy things interior, gauge panel, HID, BBS and throw in the brakes, and the 6-speed and add your parts to it and ya got a stg 2 car that will scoot pretty good. And of couse you can still mod it if you feel the need. Just my opinion though I love the fact that I got the STi even if it did or will cost more.
If I took the mods off and went back to stock, could I leave the catless UP in? I wouldn't need it in the STI and it's a bit$&Ch to take out. Would the factory map handle the UP okay? Also, I would have to switch back to stock injectors but I don't know if could get the GBODs back in. Aw hell...maybe I should just stick with ol' blue, and wait three years till I'm done with school. By then, I would know exactly what I want to build and would have the cash to afford it. Ahhh, to build the dream subie from the ground up, or at least have you guys build it for me. For now, maybe sway bars and bigger turbo to tide me over.
^^ good idea. waite till school is over gather some money and build away. besides your car is pretty nice any ways.
coilovers would tide you over for some auto-x action you got a good turbo in there with plenty of power to tide you over, make the sucker stick!
I agree with this. I didn't know there was school and stuff involved right now. Get your job and rest of your life going then worry about the car. Its very easy to think short term when maybe the big picture is more important. Don't get me wrong though keep buying parts if it helps keep you sane.(it helps me from cracking up from time to time)
