that sweet burning smell of my brain sizzling as steam pours out of my ears. i am so friggin' pissed off at my POS subarus its not even funny. so today the MAF decided to take a crap on me, alright disconect it and its all good and gravy, it runs and drives, only code is low MAF imput. so i get it to work no worries nothing but the MAF wrong. come out at 8' to start the worthless pile and yippy! cranked over, then dropped to less than 500rpm, then surged to over 3000. then all of the sudden the CEL flashes and comes solid light, oh sweet, now its running on half the motor! oh wait, nope, now its stalling out and dying, nope, surged over 2 grand again... wow, sure seems to be a ton of smoke streaming out of the exhaust, smells like gas, sweet, now it sounds like one cylinder is firing, oh, nope, now it died. all this withing a matter of seconds, god how i HATE my subaru, i buy this for a DD, i do rims, thats all, and the POS turds out on my and takes a major dive. so any ideas on how to get this worthless pile of cow crap on the road till i can buy a motor to swap into this pile of junk? i think its more than a MAF now

probably a bad injector but first try my maf sensor, like i said there is a recall, they arent supposed to run without a maf, and they wont run well!

no erik, the thing seriously was running on 1 or maybe* 2 cylinders, knocking, and shaking so violently i think it might even have broken a motor mount. i would hope its just a MAF, but i am more than willing to bet its more than that now

dude, its the maf, what color was the smoke? blackish blue? smells like gas? your maf has no idea whats goin on, so its throwing whatever it thinks will work for fuel in it trying to make it work

Sounds like my Eclipse when the maf came unplugged. It burned 7 gallons of fuel limping it to a street light in 7 miles. VWs are the only OBD2 cars I know of that can run without a MAF.

well it was running good when i unplugged it initially, with it plugged in it didnt run at all, then i unplugged it and it ran, not extremely well but ran more than good enough to get me to work, then i came back out and... i dunno

My car won't run without the MAF plugged in. and it's OBD I. don't get too frustrated with it until you get the MAF at least cleaned and plugged back in.

I have a extra MAF from a 98 forester 2.2l. which should still be in functinal condition. let me know if you want it.

when my maf went bad the first time (too much flter oil) it would idle wierd, and the CEL would flash for a bith then go solid, but it ened up running fine. infact my CEL is still on from this when it happened over 2 yrs ago. i clear the code and it keeps coming back and i have tried 2 new mafs.

when we were messing on Jacks car it would go into limp mode and not rev over 3k rpms. idle strange, really low and surge back up to 2k or so. it ended up being a bad engine harness. i am sure he has more info on this.

good luck getting it going, and let me know if you want this maf (and tapped oil pan ;-) )

Like martin already said, I had a really terrible Idle on my RS when it showed up. I would turn it on, it would rev high, then come to normal, and then sputter and kill. Sometimes it would just kill immediately.

I found that it had some weird wiring going on, so I got an entire engine harness from a guy on rs25.com for $50. Didnt help initially, but I'm sure it helped with the idle after I solved the ACTUAL problem.

I replaced my MAF-didnt change anything, so it sounds similar to the issues with your car.

Bikerboy then recommended I clean my IAC. I did that and the car, ::gasp:: started and held an idle perfectly, with no problems.

It took me an hour, some q tips, brake clean, and some rags.

I was pumped until the themostat crapped the next day and I had to replace that and the radiator cap because the idiot previous owner used a WRX one.

Anyways curly, at least try giving the IAC a shot. Clean'er up good, and just expect it NOT to work so you dont get pissed when it doesnt.

It also smelled like gas. I didnt have a lot of smoke like you're talking about, but that could have been because it was fairly cold, so maybe the exhaust steam that was coming out actually was smoke.

With the MAF unplugged the engine went into safety mode, and would limp everywhere, but the idle was still weird.

Since your car is dying outside of safety mode, it should be safe to say that it wasnt your MAF that was the instigator of the problem. I would blame it on the IAC, which the maf was compensating for, maybe erik can comment on how far off that statement is.

will do, as far as getting pissed, isnt happening. more disapointed and distraut that its happening is more like it. me and Martin also thought possible problem with the ECU, but who knows at this point. hopefully i will be pulling some info from the ECU and we can figure out what is going on in there. cross your fingers boys, and keep throwing out ideas

FYI: I think it was Will who switched caps on ya, before we started with all the maf stuff.

sucks that the maf didnt fix it. good luck with the ecu explorer i have never understood that stuff.

so yeah, not head gaskets, not MAF, not coil, not plug wires, not plugs, not injectors, not main harness, not ECU, not bad oil, not iac, not knock sensor, not 02 sensor... i have tried a few other things. any other ideas boys? seems irrely similar to Matt's JDM STi motor when it spun a bearing. seriously, anyone got any other ideas? i have been combing over this thing with an overly fine toothed comb!
