This weekend I had my car transform into a real sports utility grocery-getter. My mods before were a Helix uppipe, Invidia downpipe, and Bosal catback. I now have an STi Intercooler, VF39 turbo, and a 2004 STi ECU installed in addition to those mods. My impressions: Woah, man! I didn't think it gained very much power when I first mashed the gas pedal after the install, but in first gear I broke all 4 tires loose when it began to climb past ~3500 RPM on a slightly uneven road surface. What I'm saying is that I didn't launch the car. I just floored it going 5 mph and once it hit 10 mph it went crazy! Mr. LVT, who helped me install the parts, sat in the wagon and couldn't stop talking about the tires breaking loose and the power. (but I must admit that it was 35 degrees outside, I'm running Michelin Artic Alpine winter tires, and they're inflated to 36 psi) The car feels like it lags a bit longer [when I mash the gas pedal at low RPM], but anywhere in the RPM band between ~3000-6500 RPM the thing just tears @ss! I now have a 7000 RPM redline and the power increases all the way to redline whereas the TD04 turbo in the EJ25 would smooth out around 5000 RPM. It strangely feels more alive. It pulls harder than before when I accelerate normally; kinda like it wants me to stomp on it. I'm really used to accelerating slow like a grandpa on cold mornings, but the wagon feels like it's asking for it now. It's like it is motivating me to race... more than it used to. I had to refill my gas tank within two days (it usually takes 3-4 days until it needs a refill). I also reset the STi ECU before driving it off the garage floor, so that may play a part in it. I must have done 50 city/50 freeway in this past gas tank and I got to 280 miles when I was at 20% empty. I hope this improves. My commute to work is ~40 minutes in stop and go traffic. My exhaust wasn't that loud before with the Bosal single tip. Now with the upgrade to STi status, the engine seems like it breathes better and I can hear it breathe better. So much that the sound has increased and I'm beginning to think it's a little too loud. It's noticably louder at idle, during cruise, and when I'm on the gas. I have to get used to it now.
Congrats man. It definately looked like it was moving when you took off down University. Definately a sleeper. Nice work.
Mr. F than you woke up! JK Now when are you going to see it a a circuit event? I wanna ride after riding Techy101's XT. wooohoooo Big Congrat's Wagon man!
i like it alot compare to before. I really need to stop playing with turbo cars because it's depressing when i go back into my N/A RS. we started at about 8 in the morning and finished about 3-4pm. I think we would've finished faster if it wasn't for the clamps being faced in a way that took us forever to reached and some missing parts that we had to pick up at the store....and of course the time i took to constantly paint layers on my little bumper vents but it was a job well done and we all liked the results.
we are going to have to set up another race home from firestone with your new power, and mine on teh way.....
Thanks for the replies, friends of MNSubaruClub. Jason, I didn't race out of Firestone. It could have been due to the louder exhaust that I sounded like I was on the gas. Chong, I don't plan to take the FXT to the circuit when I have eggs in the back. If an event comes around the corner that I want to sign up for, I'll probably go this year. Hercules, thanks. It'll be nice to see you on the street too. Xcelor8, I didn't have my tax return in time to purchase the Bosal downpipe. I'm still using my Invidia DP, and it works so I'm happy. Russ, the VF39 was ported by bikerboy for MCJT last year. I then bought MCJT's used VF39 from him. No boost creep! Tommy and Martin, I wish it is STi material. I don't have 6-speed or the suspension, but the power is satisfying my hunger for now. Dream, thanks. Chuck told me about your "new found" surprise when he met you at the mall. Congrats. Lue, thanks again for your help. I really appreciate it. The next time, I'll drink some Brandy with j00... I just didn't want to drink it while working on my OWN car. Speedemon, thanks for the offer. A Mustang GT and a 350Z couldn't pass me this Sat, so they gave up. Powerlabs, sorry. I was throwing numbers off the top of my head so they aren't totally correct. The concept is correct though. This will be a good year.
Hey Fong, nice Sleeper...I like! Finally saw it tonight at firestone. The suspension work is nice too...Seem to be great with those WRX spring and struts.
