I started hijacking another thread and thought it best to just start a new one. Post up a photo and details on what compelled you to buy your first Subie. This was our first. I think it was an 86. That TV commercial with the farm kid who's dad says, "I thought we agreed you'd buy a Subaru." planted the seed for us and after seeing one on the street, we knew we had to have one!
My bugeye was actually my first Subaru. I originally bought it to replace my EG Civic sedan because I wanted something fun to drive that could handle snow. It started when I saw the Impreza rally car in 2001, think it was at the World of Wheels show in St Paul. Went there with my dad and a friend of mine, looked at some cars, had a few beers even though we were 19 at the time (good ol' Dad, RIP). Still have a photo of that exact car hanging on the wall in my garage. Anyway, between that first encounter and many hours spent playing Gran Turismo I developed a strong affection for GD Imprezas, bugeyes in particular. Fast forward to 2010 and I finally bought one, loved it every day since. Plans of driving it all year didn't pan out since I bought a lowered rust-free model from down South, but it makes my summers a lot more enjoyable. I've spent countless hours (and probably way too much money) making it look and perform the way I want it to, not sure if I'll ever be able to part with it now. Here's a quick timeline of its evolution, starting with more or less how it was when I bought it, less the fog covers and clear sidemarkers: And finally its current state: Still not sure who owned the silver bugeye next to mine in the first photo, so if anyone knows I'd be interested in finding out. Pretty sure that was at the 2010 Wheels & Wings car show in Osceola, WI.
How fast was she!? Awfully shiny! My first, 2002 WRB WRX that i bought used in 2003. Loved that car and still do!(even if I don't own it anymore)
My 99 RS. First Subaru and still favorite. Totaled in 2004. I actually bought it from a friend. I wanted something a bit more fun than the 1987 Honda Civic that I had at the time. In this car, I learned the joys of all-wheel-drive and driving sideways in the snow. Low-speed Scandinavian Flick FTW.
1991 Loyale wagon - 3 speed Automatic with push button 4x4. I honestly don't think I took any pictures of it...flip-phone days Looked exactly like this, only 90% rustier.
It's a bit of a grey area, as the car I drove first wasn't mine at the time, but later became mine. My dad had a '92 Loyale, and my mom had a '92 Legacy, so I drove the Loyale a lot in the first 6 months I had my license. I liked it, but being a 3-speed Auto and FWD, it left a lot to be desired. From that first winter (probably 2003 or so). First car I bought was an '85 4WD 5MT. Pictured here after I put the 15" Peugeot alloys on it. I drove the '85 for while, and left it home when I came up to Duluth for college. But it was super rusty, so I pushed it in the woods and moved on to a pair of lifted '88s. Then my parents shuffled cars, and I used parts from the '85 and the engine from the '92 Legacy to convert the '92 Loyale to 4WD and EJ22. Here's a picture of it within a couple days of it being driveable in it's new configuration....at Firestone. And later 5-lug swapped:
I hope to someday. Haha. It'll be like those pictures you see of Superbird's and Daytona's rotting away in a field or covered in dust in a barn, only it'll be STi wings instead.
My mom bought a 1985 GL Turbo Wagon with a funky digital dash and 4wd, it was blue. My dad liked it so much he bought a 86 GL Wagon base model, pretty sure it was FWD and yes it was blue too. Anyways when they split up I inherited his GL wagon. My hand me down was fun to drive because it was manual, my mom's automatic was fun to drive only because it had a turbocharger, I still remember the cool graphic of the turbo spinning when on boost. They looked exactly like these down to the hubcaps. Dad's (mine in High School) Mom's After other vehicles in between I went back to Subaru with this in 2011 which traded in for my 15 :
They live on. However, I'm currently trying to nail down a deal that would involve me back in a Satin White Pearl wagon.
I don't have any pictures on hand but my first car was a Chevy Beretta. I was stupid enough to let my friend drive it on a dirt road, he lost control and rolled it in he ditch and was totaled.
My first Subie. 2006 STi. I got it with 9900 miles on it. Drove with my Dad to Wisconsin to get it. I fell in love with this car. It made me feel invincible. I drove it back and felt alive. It was the first car I ever bought by myself. I still feel like this every time I drive my STi. I have traded the original, bought a 13' WRX, and traded that as well. But, you never forget your first! Lol.
