ok, so my cousin (240sx)is coming back in a few weeks and talked me into doing some auto crossing with him. proboly start with a class or two. after my turbo updrade here i'm going to be a broke sonofagun for a while. what do you guys thing would be a good first upgrade to do?
I hear the Anit lift kit for our cars, is an amazing upgrade. Two others that come to mind that are inexpensive, are rear diff bushings, and steering rack bushings. Being that you have an STi im not sure if they are the same as the wrx. i will be purchasing the ALK, Sway bars, and springs at the same time, and adding them one by one. an STI should be ready to go right out of the box, i dont mean totally dominant race prepped, but no slouch, perhaps some tires that will last longer?

Anyway, being you are already going to be in SM, it really depends. There are several directions you could go, but you will not be competitive unless you dump big bucks into it. In light of that, just take it out as it is and have fun.... You can do more as you learn what you do and don't like. On the other hand, if you are looking to do something, I would suggest the front bar and maybe the offset bushings (ALK will put you in Prepared, I believe!). Other than that, springs are a good option (short of coilovers). If you go big in front, a rear bar will help as well. There are numerous paths to take depending on what your future plans are....
A simple rhyme if you want to autocross a Subaru: "Stay away from ALK" it changes the basic geometry of the suspension, and therefore puts in into Prepared class. It adds castor but really there are other ways you can add some castor without it (noltec/PDE plates). As for modifications, since you're in SM you have a lot of options, but to be competitive it is going to be costly.
so front rear swaybars, upgraded mounts and endlinks? maybe some springs later onif i'm having a good time? -thanks!!!

Tires make a big difference! I had almost as good of a suspension setup, besides not well dampen struts, but tires would have made the difference. A rear sway bar is a good way to go, aside from tires.

Look at the top AutoX guys, they say that the front bar is the way to go, not the rear, as it adds more grip to the front as opposed to removing it from the rear. Of course, doing both is ok too, but the front bar is the focal point.
The new JDM Pink Sti springs are a good match to the stock struts if you don't want to break the piggy bank.
yes, a front bar is good, I was thinking about getting one sometime. It helps keep the front end down. A rear bar is a spot to start because it'll conteract with the stock front. But yes, getting BOTH front and rear bars are A LOT better.

This suggstion is for a STi only. The non-STi models can indeed benefit greatly from just a rear bar, my RS did, 5 years ago!
