Who's done it? Anyone been out this year yet? We've got a Walleye Sauger tournament on Saturday morning and I've never fished the river before. I've got a pretty good idea of what to do, but any additional help/techniques would be appreciated. I'll post pics of all of the fish that we catch. It's gonna be a little chilly so I'll be bundled up. Hopefully our boat starts - we usually test it in a lake but that's not happenin this week. Sauger: Walter:
Never fished for one of those... Walleyes are a different story... Love those little guys. I've found that a Shiny Red Hook seems to catch there eye.
I was out last week on the mississippi shore fishing around that inlet by the stone arch bridge. I never really fish rivers so I don't have much advice. We'll probably pull our boat out sometime in the next few weeks. we use one of these to test the outboard http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/t...parentType=index&indexId=cat600059&hasJS=true
Right on. I've got one of those, but I didn't want to fill the lower unit with water and have the stupid weather get below freezing again.
i never fish walleye but I did catch a 27" one while muskie fishing on a bucher jointed shallow raider lol
Independance is chaulked full of nice walters. It sucks that the park closes at night- I would spend all day on that lake.
I wish i could be more luck but i havent got out yet this year but we always look for holes or humps close to the damn( which will be packed with boats if this tourny is of any size) If the fish are feeding pretty good fish the clam beds/flats and the transitions into deep water were they might already be suspending for post spawn. if your going to get a chance to prefish id try those transitions to flats with some jerk baits
Awesome, Thanks man! That's exactly what I was looking for! Any bait / presentation suggestions? I've heard that "Hair jigs" are sold at the bait shop and do well.
if your going to try the jerk bait presentation i would try and work them really slow with long pauses but try all different speed and as far as jigs go I've always been told to keep it really simple early season but if fish are already starting to go into pre spawn they could be feeding really hard but it might be a bit early, and as far as hair jigs go they could be the ticket id do some homework and call all the local bait shops (four seasons is one really good one) down around red wing and see whats going on down there they are usually very helpful thats the best advice i can give you by far
Little ones Just cause Ted posted some fish, I gotta. The first represents a 20 minute battle with a light action rod with 6 lb test. It was 29.5 inches and 10.5 lbs. The second is a lunker from this winter on Chisago Lake. I have fished down by Red Wing but never found em. Good luck, leave some for me (and tell me where they are!). BTW, I have never caught sauger anywhere EXCEPT St.Croix and Mississippi rivers. I know they are in there...somewhere.
try a lindy rig just put a 1oz weight 3 feet up the line with a worm on the hook and drift down the river
yeah i like the lindy rig idea it would help him cover alot of water if he hasnt fished down there much before
We did prety well! Busted some ice, caught some Sauger, took 3rd, and got our entry fee ($30.00) back. Pictures of fish hopefully coming soon.
Yeah, I wish it was mine. Mine is still sitting there waiting for warmer weather and my buddy's boat motor is in about 10,000 pieces he's totally rebuilding it. We borrowed it from one of his co-workers.
Hey Ted, Is that Mark from Discount Steel with you? I just saw him yesterday, picking up steel for Amy's Leggy cage.
I was out there last Saturaday, we were out scouting the area and didn't catch anything, but it was really nice to enjoy some spring weather. Next time we'll bring out the boat. That must of been you guys out there, we saw a bunch of anglers on boats. Good catch!
Of course he did. I feel a Section 8, Discount Steel, Mayhem Racing trifecta of Walleye harvest coming on this year!
