UPDATE! I'm now burning 92 non-oxygenated. I plan to run this from now on, is it good? Pros and Cons?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

.....I can already smell it burning. It was time for a fillup, so with note that it sort of helps cleans the injectors (Dads says) because of a higher rating octane, I decided to put a little in to see if there's a difference at all later down the road. He said that it should be put in like once a year.

I put in 8 gals of 87oct, and 2.8gals of 110oct over at that one pump on Century and 36. What's my ups and downs again with this in the tank?

uh oh....it's leaded!

Russ posted:
"Short stop (citgo)
2473 Division st. n
North st. spaul
92 non-oxy
110 leaded"

That's where I got it. I think O2's are going to go out now... Time to switch to unleaded 100oct.

time to run 87 non-oxy till you get something in there to take advantage of the better gas. You will loose performance with anything over 87 in your na car.

Agreed with Russ. The higher flashpoint of the 100 octane won't burn as completely as 87 will in your engine. You're gonna run a little rich until that burns off.

So does it help clean the injectors some at all due to it being higher octane? I know there are fuels that is used to clean, but what about this 110 leaded and unleaded 100octanes?

If you want to clean your injectors, dump a can of SeaFoam into the tank.

92.96 octane?

I got a can of Torco from Russ and mixed it with a full tank, supposed to yield like 100+ octane. Hopefully Russ will have some time this weekend to tune and see if it actually made a difference. If it did, I'll be running a can in every tank this summer.;)

110 is definitely leaded. I thought Sunoco's GT100 was the highest octane unleaded gas sold, but a few people have reported 104 unleaded a few places around town in my thread on MNSC and here.

The number displayed on pumps on Oz is the Research Octane Number (RON). The number on pumps here in the USA is the pump octane number, (RON+MON)/2

I'm a chemical engineer and my advice is not to use 100+ octane for gas. Especially leaded. With higher ratings of octane it will take a higher temperature to fully burn the fuel. Since Impreza's reccomend using 87 in the manual its still safe to use 92 but not safe to use 100+.

In high octane gas such as 100 or more the carbon chain is longer thus having a higher igniting point. Gas over 100 octane is for drag cars or airplanes whose engines reach those high temperatures. Also leaded gas is bad, if your car says "use unleaded fuel only." Running on leaded gas will produce deposits in your fuel system.

So therefore the gas that you smell is the unburned gas that your engine wasn't capable of burning. My advice is to flush your system out and use a fuel injector cleaner.

oh and by the way the myth of using higher octane gas to clean fuel injectors is false. your better off getting a bottle of STP cause its safer and cheaper. Tell your Dad not to use higher octane gas next time when he wants to clean his injectors.

Also, leaded gasoline isn't very good for catalytic converters -- it tends to plug them up very quickly.

Good point...it's also not great for oxygen sensors.

Catalytic converters? Oxygen sensors? Who needs 'em :p

BTW the Sunoco 104 is unleaded, but I don't think we've got any Sunoco stations around. I believe there is one in Iowa, probably near that motorsports facility. MidAmerica or something like that?

nOOOO!!!!

Russ, the 87 at Citgo is NOT NonOxygenated, only 91 is. I asked the ladies in there and that's what they said. Also there's a sticker on top over every 91 pump that lists that it's NonOxygenated. But I'm not sure if only the 91 is NonOxygenated because the sticker is placed in the same area at all the pumps.

I rans the car HARD just to burn up the fuel, I even had a acceleration contest with a fellow VW guy in his supercharged hatch, of course I won, but the 87 is not NonOxygenated? [xx(]

Yeah, you want to run the lowest octane possible that does not produce knock to get the most power out of your engine. You may be able to take advantage of the higher octane fuel if you get an engine computer and start advancing the timing, maybe get some different cams too.

Yes, understood about the octane rating, but what about it being non-oxygenated? Ray from teh Texaco on Rice St. told me that non-oxygenated fuel will be found in 91octane or higher.

Where can I find non-oxygenated 87? Where ever I see that it's non-oxygenated, it's mostly 92 octane.

There is a gas station on Central avenue. I think it is owned by Jeff Bobby and Steves. They have some really high octane (not exactly sure how high octaine) thats around $3.00+/gal.
