FreeSSM: http://developer.berlios.de/projects/freessm/ So I stumbled across FreeSSM last week when I was digging for dirt on my faulty transfer clutch (aka car out of gas). I immediately ordered a $10 Vag-com OBDII/USB cable off eBay to hook up to my netbook, and as it turns out, it's actually sort of neat. Is anyone else aware of what this is and how cheap it is to read all sorts of happy fun stuff from your ECU on the cheap?

Yep, that's the main thread I came across. Install with GDebi on my Lubuntu powered Dell Mini 10 was super simple. I'd have to imagine it's just as easy as Windows. The cable already paid for itself when I left for work, car started acting funny, and I realized the battery was only reading ~8V. Sh*tbox had a new Sears battery in it as of last week so I was pretty sure the alternator was toast. AutoZone bench test confirmed this, so chalk up some easy diagnostics to FreeSSM right of the bat!
Mine worked right out of the box with my '99 Forester, but I have yet to get my '07 Forester reading correctly. Time to start Googling ...
Yea I tried looking it up, I found that a tune can sometimes block it.. I'll have to keep looking though.
I got it to work, the cable wasn't installed right.. Hey Nuke, I downloaded Romraider the other night but have yet to look into it. I'll have to look at it here soon.
