    Hello all,

I am ready to sell my 1989 subaru GL. It has the dual range 5 speed manual transmission, and is in fair shape, the is rust around the wheels, but less than I would expect for its age. The oil, distributor cap, spark plug wires, rotor, timing belts, have all been changed in the last 700 miles. the paint is kinda sketchy, and I suspect it has a blown head gasket. There is alot of white smoke when she is running. The car has enjoyed many miles , I don't know if the odometer has turned over or not (it reads 157,526), so millage is a guess... comes with an extra set of wheels, some spare parts, ecu/headlamps/misc stuff. $450.00

I also have an ej18 out of a 1993 Impreza I can throw in for couple extra bucks packed with an ej 5speed manual transmission for $900.00

Have you had the front wheels off from the car yet?

I have a 1988 and there are lock washers behind the wheels to space them out to clear the calipers. Just wondering if you had the same issue with those wheels?

Does the spare engine/trany come with wiring?

ummm, the wiring it would come with would be the wire under the hood...

also, I never had any issues with the calipers. I am unfamiliar with the issue you had. it does often want to stay in 4 wheel high when you want to put it back in FWD.

I'd be willing to bet you have EA81 (1980-84 sedans and wagons -87 brats and hatches) wheels on it. Their wheels look almost identical, but the spokes are shaped differently, and do not clear EA82 calipers.

Putz, I just noticed this post. White smoke in the exhaust does not mean head gasket failure. The non-turbo versions are not common for head gasket failure, but they ARE common for intake manifold gasket failure, which will leak coolant into the intake. It's not a terribly difficult job, and the gaskets are cheap. I'd highly recommend doing a chemical head gasket test and/or a compression test.

    Thanks Chux,

I will try that and see where it gets me. I do love that damn car, but seriously question if it is worth the trouble.

Did you ever make sure the head gasket was shot?

Nope. I have not had time. I have not confirmed it... but I figure the sell price would assume the worst, if its not blown then ... bonus!

I found it was only a bad hose clamp on the lower radiator hose... lolz... I am actually driving it right now as my daily, I cannot get the defrost to work it will only blow air out the dash vents, but not in the defrost vents.... also... the exhaust fell off behind the ypipe... lolz....

White vacuum canister by the passenger strut tower. Make sure the vacuum line to that, and from that back through the firewall is all in-tact. That could easily be your problem. Either that or the switch itself, if the passages in the switch do not seal, it won't work....I ended up replacing mine with a T-fitting so it was always on Heat/Def

The previous owner tore it apart.... and I cannot find the parts anywhere.... what would be the easiest way to fix it to run heat and defrost only?

There are a bunch of vacuum lines going to the back of that. With some experimentation, you should be able to figure out which comes from the engine, and from there which ones control which blend door. IIRC there's one for defrost, one for heat (floor vents) and another for recirc. Just use a small T fitting between the supply and the def/heat ones. Then install a rocker switch to the wires to turn the fan on/off....Looks like the temperature slider is still there, so you'll get most function back that way (side vents have their own controls independent of the main control, you'll only loose use of the central vent and recirc)

If you think you might want it I'd sell it. Now it needs exhaust, it runs and has not let me down since I fixed the radiator hose, the engine pulls strong, but the is a furl leak on one of the fitting on the fuel pump. The interior... is nice-ish... and tabs are good through July 2016.

The heater works (the A/C does not) but the fan selector is stuck to blow out the cabin vents.

If you are interested let me know.. No joy rides!!! Lolz...

I wish I didn't have to save cash to drive down to alabama. If you have this vehicle coming the first of the year. I will definitely will contact you. Cause I have a 86 XT turbo stilling in my dads barn. That has a mint motor but garbage shell.
