For sale is my 2005 STi with a salvage title. Fyi this would need to pass a salvage inspection in order to be registered. This would be a great donor for a FULL STi conversion on a GD chassis, or a full swap on a GC. I do not have the time or facilities (garage, etc.) to part the car out, and am trying to sell it as a full vehicle right now for someone who wants the parts, wants to part it out, or wants to prep it for a salvage inspection.

    The Car
Bought the car in July 2012 with 86k miles on it. Drove it ~300 miles and it spun a bearing. Performed a complete rebuild/build on the engine which can be seen here. Absolutely everything works perfectly on this car (electronic, mechanical, etc). Below is a list of work done to the car in the last 1000 miles.

    Engine

    • · Grimmspeed Turbo Heat Shield $71
    • · New OEM Nitrided Crank $315
    • · Eagle Rods $352
    • · CP 8.2:1 CR Forged Pistons $575
    • · 06 Subaru STi oil pan and pickup $119
    • · Subaru OEM Oil cooler $229
    • · Subaru OEM STi EJ257 Master Gasket set $273
    • · ARP Head Studs $185
    • · Gates Complete “Racing” timing belt kit with water pump $305
    • · Tomei ARMS M7960 Turbocharger $1350
    • · Subaru OEM cam gear $72
    • · Tomioka Racing Timing belt guide $50
    • · Grimmspeed Up Pipe $160
    • · Used OEM heads $625
    • · Used OEM Cams $180
    • · Mishimoto Intercooler Hose Kit $87
    • · Block and heads fully cleaned and machined $1015
    • - GrimmSpeed EBCS $110 (not installed)

    Transmission/Driveline/Tires
    • · ACT street clutch disc $192
    • · Misc OEM Parts $300
    • · New OEM Front Wheel Bearing $180
    • - Continental DWS tires and full alignment $700

    Fuel
    • · Walboro 255 LPH with install kit $95 (not installed)
    • · 850 CC Modded injectors (with flow charts) $260 (not installed)
As you can see I have about $8000 in parts alone invested into the car. Not including labor. Know that the engine teardown and rebuild was done with the utmost care, following the procedures and torque specs of the EJ257 FSM. Break in (not completed yet) has been done on conventional, non-synthetic oil and Subaru OEM blue filters, staying out of boost, engine braking frequently, and varying RPM's constantly.

I realize this is not a "super bargain price" for a car that is not registered and has a salvage title. Shoot me a reasonable offer. I also realize that I would need a very particular buyer to want this for parts or to want to prep it for inspection. Please contact me with any questions and feel free to shoot me a reasonable offer.

So, I'm confused - as it sits, it needs to be trailered because legally it has no title? You need to do work to the car to even get it to the level of salvage title? What kind of work would be involved in that?

Yes it would need work to get certified as a registered vehicle. What I'm hoping for is to find someone that wants all the parts for a complete swap. I have a salvage title in my name for the car, so the ownership/title would be transferred to whoever bought it. To get it re-certified in Minnesota, it would have to go through a salvage inspection and other required paperwork. It would take some time/effort, hence the low price.

Legally it has a title branded "salvage", and is not registered. However I believe you can get exceptions to drive the car (5 day or something). Again, it would need some work on the front end to pass inspection is what I was told, that is why it is a low price. If I absolutely cannot find the right buyer (really looking for someone who wants all the parts or wants to part it out themselves and make a few $), I will probably end up keeping it, buying an Impreza next summer, and swapping everything over. Just seeing if there is interest right now because I am discouraged/not motivated after the whole engine problem and now this.

Do you know what the car needs on the front end? Is something stil bent or missing?

Not sure exactly what needs to be done as I have absolutely no experience with salvage inspections or salvage titles. I'm trying to be honest and sell it as-is: a non-registered, but titled vehicle that is mechanically/electronically perfect. The guy I bought it from wasn't as courteous and I ended up paying the price. If I sell for asking price (minus a bit for bargaining), I'll be losing around $13k on the whole deal (yes I'll have some cheese with that whine). Ideally, as stated, I would like to find someone who wants it for swap parts and/or part it out (pipe dream I know). I don't want to screw anyone over and am trying to give the best price I can afford. Thought about swapping into another chassis, but unfortunately I have a loan on this car and would need to pay that off completely, then save up for a clean-title shell before I can even begin to pull parts.

Isn't $13K worth giving the inspection a shot? As stated several times, people have gone through this without any issues. I hope everything works out for you, but I'd have a hard time eating $13K without a fight.

Well I was told that there are things that need to be fixed before inspection (some sheet metal repair in the engine bay, some of the welds need to be ground/re-painted, PS reservior bracket needs replacing, battery tray needs replacing, front radiator support was suggested). I do not think it would pass as-is because I have heard that some inspectors are very, very picky with ANY flaws. Honestly I just don't want to deal with the car anymore and I know that even if someone bought the car to part it out, they could make a bit of money (built motor, transmission swap, differential, hubs/brakes, suspension, basically new turbo, injectors, etc.) Unfortunately it's not an option for me because I owe money on the car.

I see a similarly modded STi on here (with Salvage rebuilt title) for about $17k.

MN Subaru price $10.5k obo right now.

Is there some sort of penalty for failing? What's the worst that could happen...they say it doesn't pass and then you're back into the same spot you are now?

Thanks, do you have any pics of this part of the car? I am debating buying this for a race car.

It's really hard to get pics because of the packed engine bay. Here is the bay shot with the engine out so you can judge for yourself. Everything from the shock towers back is perfect and is not damaged/repaired in any way. Got it aligned when I got new tires (1000) miles ago and everything checked out perfect. Shoot me a PM and I'll give you my best price if you are seriously interested.

As long as you have the title you can get it registered. I've done it. Is there some reason you don't want to or are trying to hide? You could easily get it registered and sell it for more. They will check the vin and that's about it. I'm confused on why you're willing to lose so money when you could just go get it inspected and titled.

It needs some body work done on the front end to be perfect for inspection. I was told around $1000-1500 to do everything including sanding and re-spraying it. Factored this into the price. Honestly right now I cannot spend another dime on the car, and I am very hesitant because I have no experience with salvage inspections or salvage registration. If I cannot get enough for it, I might just keep it and save up to have the body-work done and either sell it after it is registered or keep it.

Well speaking from experience, if the car drives and has all body pieces on it. Just drive it to get it inspected and it will pass. Body work don't matter. It could be hammered with hail dents and missing paint and it will still pass. They check vin numbers. So unless your ride is stolen you have nothing to worry about.
