I have been seeing a lot of people selling there wrx's lately and I was thinking it would be good to allow new members to view the cars for sale. Not sure what that would take but the way I see it is a new say someone is looking to sell there mazda, or whatever and get into the subarus, they come accross this site, and they can not even look at the list of cars that are being sold.

I am not saying reverse the rule about them being able to sell stuff, but if they are trying to find a subaru, it should be nice if we could help the current members sell theirs.

    what do ya think people?

russ, weight in on this on how much work it would be to make this doable or if it is not doable. If it can not be done just delete this thread.

This is what I've said before. The mods/owners of the site seem very firm on not budging from the recent change in rules.

I think if someone is really serious about buying/selling a car they would have looked or posted somewhere else like carsoup, craigslist etc.

    THIS!

Although, one compromise I could see working well is to have a separate "Vehicle FS/WTB" forum. This forum would have a required template (kinda like the supra forums: http://www.mkivforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=294), would be heavily moderated, and would be viewable to the public.

We still run the chance of opening this forum up to scammers, shady dealerships selling re-titled cars, and other such non-sense. But that's where the heavy moderation and "pre-requisites" work to weed out the junk.

This wouldn't require any hacks, just moderation.

At the end of the day tho, It's 100% up to the admin/owner and the moderators who will be required to add another task to their growing list of duties.

When we moved back to the States in 2007, I got a lot of good info from the MnSubaru website, especially from the cars for sale. We didn't end up buying one through here - mostly a timing issue - but learned a lot through reading the threads. What to look for, who had advice worth listening to, what kind of prices cars were going for, what mods to be careful of, etc.

If the timing had been different we definitely would have bought a wagon through MnSubaru. It was a great resource for us when we were newbs and local, too. Plus it usually had quick and timely responses to questions. Being able to see a cars for sale thread seems like a good idea from my experience and I think also helps to keep the site a little less feeling like you have to already have a Subaru to be a part of it.

edit: We also used craigslist, carsoup, dealer sites, etc. but this is where the info was to be had and was much better than we found on NASIOC or elsewhere.

I agree with Sheen's suggestion of a car FS forum. I know Russ and the mods have been talking about this for a while now. It will need to have some requirements, but should be fairly easy to create and moderate, if done properly.

i think you misunderstood russ. he was suggesting that anyone can purchase right away but you would need 30 posts or membership before you could sell

i don't see how you could implement it though

I think it would be a good idea to let all people see the cars for sale. You make it a separate section and still keep the other classified blocked. Also, I know in the MWSOC classifieds that they require the VIN to be availible upon request. I actually came on here to see if there were any local cars for sale, and I still can't see the for sale section. I bought my wagon in Farmington!

    Good one!

I do like the idea of being able to see the for sale ads before you get to 25 posts. It is taking me forever to get there mostly because I usually only post things when I legitimate question or comment.

25 posts is easy. It's the 30 days that I'm sure they are having the issue with.

And BTW, I brought this issue up as a concern a few weeks ago and I was basically told to p!$$ up a rope. Even after giving a few ideas to keep the riff raff out. I don't think they would ONLY come here to buy a car and then leave. But if they buy the car (or parts) and leave, then the seller (the one that's been on here for a long time) would be able to get rid of their stuff. The person that bought the stuff still can't post to sell anything, but they can at least see the stuff to buy.

But I'll keep my mouth shut from now on so as not to start any controversy (sp?). I realize it's not a democracy on here so it's futile to try and give suggestions. I just thought that maybe a few more suggestions might help with a decision that will benefit everyone.

Well, IKt doers seem to hender things a bit to me. If I have just purchased a Sube and needed some things I woujld want to be able to look and hopefully put some money in someones pocket. Hopefully a forum regular. I understand that you want folks top contribute, but some folks that are into Subarus are not one that will be big posters. Heck I have been signed up sinced mid 2007. I hazve 12 posts plus this one. Does this make me an unwanted person to the club? I am constantly looking for sites for Rally Crosses, offer disounts to members. Let me know why I should not be able to posts oem parts from Rally Car builds or even my wifes wagon if it were for sale.

It just seems to exclude folks. I would think that you would want everyone interested in the club or Subarus bring them in with a hug not "your not worthy until we haze you enough".

Its to protect the club and forum members from scammers and such. Buy the MNSOC card for $12 and you get access to FS forum and can buy sell trade, whatever. Plus you'll get discounts on parts and service.

I hardly believe that asking for 25 post can be regarded as hazing. 25 posts is not much to ask. It also doesn't mean that you or any other member is unwanted. We just don't need trolls or spammers around.

Since this thread has moved in this direction, I will risk one question:

What has this policy gained us and what has it cost us since its institution?

Some folks may not have the knowledge to discuss certain things and may be trying to gain knowledge before asking or answering questions. I am not a Subaru expert. Example, I can not ever remember what a GD, GB or GDA or any of that coding system. Give me a year and I am ok.

So stating an opinion is whining. Nice to know that a senior member would bring it to name calling. With that attitude coming from the higher ranks, why would anyone new care to be ridiculed,

I do understand the scammer spammer thing. I get it all the time at my site.

So, go ahead with the insults.

So far it has gain us over 150 more active members. And short of the new grey hairs from the constant complaining about it, it really hasn't cost the site much at all. We have had a few members stomp their feet and say they are leaving, which I really don't care about. If they have been here for 2 years and haven't contributed 25 posts and now complain that they can't see the FS forums, I see that as not a huge loss. Besides, up until a few weeks ago everyone could see the FS forums. You would think that we are giving away money in there for the amount of complaints that we have received.

Sorry Doug that you think we are picking on you. But at the same point in time, you have been on here long enough to have easily made 25 posts. You could have done that in one simple thread. A simple this is who I am and this is what Davenport racing does probably would have pushed you well over 25 posts.

    One question and two comments:

Do the sponsoring vendors mind that their posts cannot be seen by the general public? For instance, I bought my ’08 STI based on a post made by Mark Frost at Walser Subaru. I recently clicked on a link that talked about new Walser service hours. I could not open the link because I did not have “enough” posts. If this were to have happened last year, I probably would not have bought my car from Mark.

Now you say, just post more. No. I believe in quality over quantity. I have been a member of this site for 630 days and have only posted 22 times that “qualify” for post counts. That is one post every 28 days. I probably could just send out more arbitrary posts and clog up the system, but what good is that? My posts are focused and talk to things that I know and understand. Not random comments. I can certainly make a bunch of random comments if you want, but that does not help with bandwidth.

I get the general jist that the 25 posts are to “protect” members from scammers. Where is personal responsibility in all of this? I want to believe that Subaru owners are smarter than the average bear.

Don't worry 125cc, your posts will get deleted by a mod. Because if we don't 4509824350987 people will complain that we let you get away with it.

It is nice to see that the numbers are up.

What is considered an Active Member?

Why as a Vendor Can I not see the Vendor page. I thought that I sigtned up to Only support this sight with discounted prices and I can not even see the section or post on that section!!! Whats up with that?!?!?

I can this account to be a vendor, but I am going to tell you that the selection of forums is also limited. Because as a vendor, you really don't need access to the OT area. Just say the word and this account will get moved to the vendor status.

So if you want a prime example about how posting more brings recognition...... I had no f@&$?ing idea who you are or what you have some for the site.... Sorry didn't realize a professional business was so thin skinned....

Wow, I feel embarrassed for the whole Subaru community based on these comments made to a sponsoring vendor of this site.

Let’s think logically about what just transpired.

    1. Davenport Racing is an outfit that is willing to give consumers a discount (specific to this site) in what anyone would call troubling economic times. This is money out of his pocket. He asked fair questions and made fair comments.

    2. We (the customers that he is trying to help) ding him publicly for said comments and questions.

I simply fail to find justification for this behavior. Perhaps this is why people choose not to post.

I've known Doug for many years and he is anything but thin-skinned. When you're in the rally community as long as he has been, you naturally grow thick skin.

I feel he is very justified in feeling insulted by the comments made to him. He stated he is a vendor on THIS site and he still got treated like some newbie piece of garbage because he gave an opinion backed up by fact. How is this going to win him over as wanting to continue to provide a service to this site?

If you feel like lashing out at something someone posts, you should at least know who you are talking to. It's real easy to be anonymous on the web and just say things on a gut reaction. You are a senior member and should act as such. Even if I didn't know who Doug was, it took me 3 clicks within this site to find out who he was and what he is on this site to do. So ignorance is no excuse.

Russ, just a quick question. Why is it that vendors shouldn't need to see OT section? Can't they be contributing members to the site as well? I'm not trying to pick a fight, just looking for clarification of one of your previous statements. Thanks.

I can answer this. Unfortunately we've had a few vendors abuse the forums and spend 1/2 their day posting personal crap all over the board including/especially in off-topic. It became a concern that we had vendor accounts aimlessly posting throughout the site and not representing their company in a professional manner.

We're still trying to tweak the system and will attempt to create a policy that will appease most of the vendors and members on the site. Obviously we're not perfect and learning through trial and error.

Mark- (Davenport Racing)- I'm sorry if your account is messed up. We'll get it straightened out asap.

Very understandable. I appreciate the explanation (basically not just telling me that's the way it is and nothing more). I guess if they are conducting themselves in a bad manner, it's only taking away from themselves and their profits. I don't see that there would be a need for the site to police them other than if they were breaking the rules of the site. If they make themselves look bad, it's their tough luck I guess.

Sorry I wasn't specifically saying Doug at Davenport Racing was thin skinned.... My comment was a generalized sarcastic comment... The point I was really trying to make is that if he had been a 'little' more activenon the forums (seeing what his business is he obviously Has a lot to offer the community other than discounts - which let's face it gets business in his door is$$$$$$$ in HIS pockets)... Then some more input of his knowledge would serve him and this site better. 1 makes him $$$$$$ 2 invests inthis forum.... Sorry wasn't trying to offend him
