I broke a tension spring. Anyone on here have the tools and ability to fix it? Call me or PM me 61two-242-978nine
They are pretty easy to change, and I'd love to help, but no free time right now, maybe next January? lol I have noticed at with since we have 6 doors with two springs each that if you keep them oiled with engine oil, and keep them well oiled they break less often, we used to break 6-12 springs a year, now we are down to 1-2 a year, just from applying oil to them on a regular basis.
you just have the single spring correct? If so you basically just have to get one end of the pole down, take the cable off of it, loosen the set screw, take off the cable pulley, and loosen the set screws for the spring and slide it off, then take it in and have a new one made, then talk to the place and see if they can give you an idea of how many turns you need to tighten it, this is based on door size and weight. once you install the new spring with all the set screws and what not, you need two 3/8 diameter bars to use to tighten the spring hence the holes in that aluminum bracket on the end of the spring Where abouts do you live?
I am in North St Paul. I had one of my friends hit me up last night on Facebook. Sounds like he works on garage stuff, so depending on his availability I might have a person who knows what they are doing help me. I hope to find out later today. I know these things are under a lot of pressure and I have no interest in being on the receiving end of that when I miss a step.
Good call. There is a reason why various positions involved with spring manufacturing carry the highest pure premiums for workers compensation, right above steel structure erectors... A big spring like that is basically a bomb.
Yeah I don't trust myself with it. I have a friend who I am still waiting to hear from. If he doesn't call me tonight I will just call the shop I talked to last night. They were smart enough to put their number on my garage door. Must have done work with the previous owners. Anyways, when I was trying to figure out the issue, I noticed the sticker. Works for me. I don't think there is a huge mark up on this sort of work, shop A and shop B are going to be similar in price.
I just had 2 springs installed not long ago. I think it was about $250. Took about an hour for the install. I didn't want to loose an eye and we were in a rush so we didn't have time to do much shopping around.
^ I don't feel as bad about this dudes price then (the one on the garage door). He said $170 - $180 (I don't remember which) to do 2 springs and a tune on the setup. No idea what a "tune" is.... maybe I should just have Nuke do that part. I am still crossing my fingers that my high school friend will come through and save me some dough. But I haven't seen dude in 12 years, so we will see. Thanks for the heads up on the price and work you had done.
I had http://www.thegaragedoorguy.net/ "tune up" my garage door a couple years ago. Didn't have to replace the springs, but the tune up was only like $45. The guy that came out was super friendly and professional. Not sure what his price would be on springs, but its another option.
Thanks man. I'll hit them up today and check the price. The kid I went to high school with has flaked on me, but I don't blame him. It has been 12 years. I had high hopes because he said he worked on garage doors when I asked for help on FB.... but I guess that is internet friends for you.
I ended up calling them. Price was a few bucks cheaper than the 1st place I called. I just booked an appt for tomorrow. Thanks everyone.
Figures, mine just broke this morning. Reliable Garage Door has a "spring special" for $149 installed for both the springs...
