I once bought regular oil for transmission. I told the guy at the store I need tranny oil and totaly did not look at what he gave me. So I got to a place where I was going to get tranny oil changed and told they mechanic to put my oil in there. 20 minutes later he comes out and says I gave them wrong oil but they put theirs in and it will cost me extra 100. I was really pissed. Right after I left the place I could not shift the gears it felt like they put mud into my tranny. So I brought the car to a dealer and they told me those guys put diff lube instead of gear oil into my tranny.

 

This is why I service my car myself.

 

same, i have met some mechanics...enough mechanics and went to school with some, enough of a reason why i do my own stuff. I never understood passing the blame to others, if you bought the oil its still on you.

There's a distinct SMELL between motor oil and gear oil. But I guess.....

 

Yeah, gear oil is NASTY smelling.
