I got a Go Pro HD for Christmas and I am just now getting around to giving it a whirl. I went up to White Bear Lake today and had a little fun on the ice/snow, but decided I should mount up the camera and get some video of the action, so tomorrow I'm heading up there to play in the snow and also put together a little bit of footage of the flying snow/Subaru.

I'll be posting up the video footage when I get back...

    Here is the video:

It was all fun and games until Johnny showed up and told me to 'cease and desist'. I really thought that a frozen lake would be the BEST place to drive like an idiot, but i guess not.

He came out to play, but his snows were too bald and he kept getting stuck. He took a lot of nice photos of the action though.

It was TONS of fun to play on the ice, now I just need to find out where I can do stuff like that legally, I was starting to try things like the flick that I learned at the rally-x school.

Wait - the police told you to stop playing on a frozen lake? WTF is up with that? And cool video.

Cool video, although I'm a little lost. Its ok for snowmobiles to fly across lakes but not cars? Was it because of doing doughnuts?

I'm not trying to start a debate, I'm genuinely curious as a transplant resident here.

Its not at all safe to be doing that on a lake. Hitting an ice heave sideways could cause a rollover and nobody wants that. Also you don't know if someone was spearfishing there and left you a 4' square hole to lose a car into.

That's what the cop was thinking. Also, in the winter a frozen lake is treated similarly to a park.

ah, got ya. I didnt think about the fishing hole part. Or the un-safe part either.

The exact comment was "You can't be doing ****ties on the ice". When he said I was good to go, I didn't stick around to press my luck.

I was pretty careful to stay in an area that was between the "road" and the shoreline that did not have any ice houses on it.

I didn't know that there were any real laws on the ice, but apparently there are even speed limits on the ice for sleds. I too am a transplant and this was my first time driving on a frozen lake. This place was big enough, we should see if we can get a Rally-x on WBL, it's friggin HUGE!

LOl...yeah I don't think the SCCA would allow us to rally-x on a lake! :)

    http://www.glacierlakesqclub.org/

skid pad, oval track, and 2 mile road course on Lake cynthia.

depending on interest, MNSOC could try to throw a lake cynthia event again next year.

Speed limit on a lake is 50 for EVERYTHING. I would say that there is probably more rules to driving anything on a lake (open or frozen) then there is for driving on the road.

35 MPH is the limit for vehicles, and snowmobiles. as well as boats i believe. WBL is not a good place to do that because water patrol is out there almost 24/7 with increased patrols on winter and summer weekends...

and snowmobiles get stopped all the time as well for speeding.

Highly recommended. Very loose layout compared to rallyx and autox... although EVERYTHING is loose compared to autox lol Makes for a VERY fun time! If I can get parts in time, I plan to be at the next event.

That's awesome, I was wondering if the rules would be listed somewhere.

I think that sub 6 is the one I would have been written for (if not others as well), I was maybe going 15 mph, but I was doing it sideways and throwing snow everywhere. The video is real-time, nothing was slowed down or sped up, so it was some serious low-speed drifting :)

It's basically show up, be respectful, don't drive like an ******* and get everyone kicked off the lake, and have fun!

In the morning, 3 run groups alternate at a self-guided pace through the 3 elements (1 hour each). In the afternoon, repeat the morning schedule except they time the road course runs. Imho they really foster an environment that centers around fun and getting to know your car better. They're not so much about adhering to some frivolous rule sets and pretending to be race car drivers lol.

Hey meow. The austin healey, pca, and com clubs still throw fantastic autox events. Considering what they want to accomplish and where they want to steer the club, the mac folks are doing a fantastic job as well.

When I took snowmobile safety training back 10 years ago there was no speed limit on the ice unless it was part of a groomed/ marked trail and or ice road.

When I took it Minnesota had a state-wide speed limit of 50 MPH, unless otherwise marked.

    Same for me.

IIRC Wisconsin has no speed limit. But I don't know if snowmobile rules apply to cars as well.

Never do anything illegal, but if you do go further north = less cops. Never really thought about spearfishing holes.... and a rollover can happen.

MNSOC local ice race? I like the idea and will bring it up at the next meeting.

LoL, i wonder if he is the same officer that stopped my girlfriend. Last year my girlfriend was doing donuts in my RS at maplewood mall when we got pulled over. The officer also told us, " You can't be doing ****ties in the parking lot!" and let us go with a warning.

How do you like the Go Pro HD? I have been thinking of getting one for the winter downhill mountain bike race coming up.

I didn't even know what he was talking about when he said it. I had never heard the term 'doing ****ties' before that day.

This was the first time using it, and I have to say that I was massively impressed with the quality of the video. I have a class 6 16GB SD card and filming at full 1080p I run out of battery before I run out of storage, something like 2 hours. I learned that I need a better video editing software, it doesn't come with anything. You also have to pay close attention, it seems a little finicky when starting out, I filmed four runs (I thought) but turns out the camera turned off after a few seconds of the first run for some reason.

I have used Vegas video, Pinnacle, and currently using Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. Premiere Pro is by far the best I have used but much more involved and not too cost effective for your average youtube video. Pinnacle is nice, easy, and cheap only downside is that both versions I have had crashed non stop. If I edited for 10 min without a crash I was pretty happy lol. I have heard this from many people who have used it. I really haven't came across anything cheap and easy that works well. Vegas was decent but I didn't buy all the effects and additional transitions so it was kind of corny.

Doesn't the Go Pro have different timed capture settings? I thought the old one did which might have been what was going on.

Yeah, you can use it for stills, times capture, video...

I used a free program for the Mac called Media Edit and it was OK, but it was not by any means ideal because the transitions were all screwy. I have a copy of Premiere Pro CS4 but I have not had a chance to use it on my desktop, there is too much going on to use it on a 15" MacBook Pro. My desktop has dual 24" monitors, quad-core processor and 8GB RAM, so I should have plenty of screen real-estate and horsepower on that.

Yeah I'm also on a 15 in. macbook pro but I hook up with my larger monitor for that reason. I also have Final Cut Express but I got Premiere not too long after so I didn't use it much. I think it was like another 150$ when buying the macbook but I looked on their site and retail is 200$. For the money its pretty good from what I could tell. Much better than pinnacle imo.
