Need a six seater so Sti & Forester are out. I don't see anyone here talking about the Tribeca much except for spare parts. 1)Are there any mods for it? 2)Will it come in Diesel and how soon? 3)Also why should i buy it over the Highlander??? 4)What is a good price on a used one? 5)What should I look for in one?

    Thanks,
    El

Ps found a lot of Toyotas with 25k for $20g's or less

I (we) love my (our) tribeca, we also looked at the cx-7 it was under powered, and I cant imagine a 4 cyl pushing all that weight around and lasting very long at the same time, turbo or not. We purchased ours when gas was really expensive, so the price we got was assaniney cheap (and I do work @ the dealer). In the neighborhood of around 14K, every option, 7 pass 45K miles. IMO the tribeca is tougher than the highlander, the highlander to me is a mazda tribute, or that mitsu crapbox thing, I think its called the outlander? IDK.

    2007-08' or 20009-10' ?

Wow thanks. Am I safe with the 06' or 07' or should I spring for the 2008-10' models. I heard they changed a lot in the two styles. If so is it worth it???

I love the 06-07 style. It looks like nothing else on the road. They just came out with a touring addition for 2010, it has HIDs and a bunch of other neato stuff though.

Not sure what Highlanders you are looking at, but my mom drives a 2004 Toyota Highlander (Back in WI, bought it new, I think there are 100,000 miles on it). It is the Limited model with all options except navigation, and I have taken it on a couple of long trips and it is a very comfortable car. Surprisingly good in the snow and offroad, considering is a pretty small SUV (and FWD until it slips). Last summer my parents, my sister and her boyfriend drove 1500 miles from WI to MT and back with their luggage and I heard no complaints. My mom vows that the day she gets rid of it will be the day another highlander shows up in the yard, no matter how hard I push the Subaru thing. Just my .02.

    Good to know

Thanks for the Toyota story! Yeah I learned to drive in a Toyota stick and an Audi 3000. I have more cool Toyota stories but I kinda miss my Y2k 2.5RS fully modded.

AWDimprezaL $14K??? That is cheap! What percent can the dealer can discount from sticker price you think??? On new or used. If the dealer can knock $5,000 off sticker price. It's a deal!
    Haha!

I luckly bought before our "one price" deal happend, I really dont know much about what kind of deals you can get nowadays, but Ide be willing to bet they would move on a new one without issue.

We have an '08 Tribeca, love it. Only real difference from 06-07 (besides the appearance) is that it is designed for 87 octane; older ones are supposed to use premium.

We looked at the Highlander a bit also, it felt a lot bigger even though it really isn't. It makes better use of interior space; if you plan on using the third row a lot the Tribeca is going to be tighter.

The Highlander seemed more expensive for what you get. (plus I was able to get more of a deal on the Tribeca.)

Pretty bummed that Subaru is apparently just letting the Tribeca die a quiet death. It really compares favorably to everything else out there imho.

You want the better AWD system! You have to test out the new AWD with traction control! I know sometimes I hate it.. but it's an alternative to not having LSDs.

    You know it, El!
I'll stop by sometimes to visit ya!

Thanks A-pike! Rear third seats are a must for my kids.

To Fuji... WHAT!!!! NO LSD! I thought the Tribeca had a center lsd??? and open rear and front diffs??? Kinda like old Impreza/wagons and Outbacks.

If so, can I get a used RS or Legacy GT wagon rear LSD and just bolt and go??? (maybe even a Kazz???!???)

DSC w/brake assist is cool my Volvo V40 has it. Straight line takeoffs are awesome (in dry or snow with very little wheel slip)!!! It also helps with braking.

You can drive yourself on to a snow peninsula as long as 1 tire touches the snow. But when the front 2 wheels loose contact with the firm snow your car does a lot of herking & jerking.

The electronic brake system kicks in and the engine rev-limiter kick in trying to fool the front open-diff that there is grip were there is none.

I find it kinda funny and kinda sad...

    Question:

Can the Tribeca take an old rear LSD without damage???
Is it a direct fit with no excessive hammering or machining?

This would be my first stealth mod on this car I could get away with with out my wife havin a fit... :)

Too bad you don't need an mini-SUV (as mini as SUV's are concerned) seating for 5. I love my Jeep Liberty Diesel :D

Well being an auto...it's got a 45/55 torque split. VDC with the center diff locking and also traction control aid.

The rear diff is different in shape from what I've seen. It runs the same one like on the new Outbacks. It looks bigger... but I was unsure if it was a R160 still or R180..

The final drive is specific on the Tribeca. But it seems the LGT runs the same one from what I can remember last time. SO that means... that 5spd auto 3.0R and possibly the LGT autos will have one that matches? But you'll do fine with traction control. If not then pick up another and I'll weld it!!! lolz

They are actually going to re-design it coming up here, and they just started offering a touring model with harmon kardon stuff, HIDs and painted lower claddings (lots of other crap too though, i just dont remember, lol)

What this guy says, this is one of the few vehicles recently produced that a car company has attemted to remove power after production because they had too much. My only complaint about this vehicle is that I would trade some power for greater economy. Cirtainly a better engine than that crapy 3.7 liter six that jeep is not foisting on the Wrangler.

How hard is it to add rear 3rd row seats to a Tribeca 5 seater???

^^^ I'd guess it to be pretty much impossible (maybe if you had a complete donor vehicle.) I thought about it briefly - realized there are no accommodations for the third-row seatbelts in the 5-seater, and didn't get much beyond that.

Yeah but the vehicle usually has the hole mounts. So all it is is a bolt in job. I think all you would have to get are seat belts and the bench seat and bolt it down. Maybe 1k to 2k for parts. That's ok!!!

    Alert!!!!
A lot of dealers are out of stock. I found one who is looking for me in 3 other states for a Subaru his family has dealerships they ship cars every 2 months. There ship date is in 2 weeks. I still got 20 days left, and he wants to buy furniture for his house!
    Heres to hoping :)

Well couldn't wait on a Tribeca so got a Highlander. Not enough volume in the states to find one used with the 3rd Seat option. Found a few with 5 seat but not the 7 seat.
On the bright side no STi... there is always TRD. Cool Beans Everybody! :)

What year did you end up with? Ours has the third row seat, and I don't think it has been used more than 3 times...

It's a 2007 with the 3rd row. 100,000 mile warranty on everything. Very hard to get into if your my size. For a 6 year old it's not a problem. They are good in a pinch.

I am gonna window tint and remote start that sucker. Exhaust and Diff mod is on the horizon.
