Some basic rules... http://examples.yourdictionary.com/examples/bad-grammar-examples.html http://grammar.yourdictionary.com/spelling-and-word-lists/Improve-Spelling.html Irony... Very relevant topic in an off-topic forum. Mind blown.
I find your post relevant and insightful, and you're hopefully going to get a large number of likes. There are a bunch of people lately that look like they're typing with their face and their posts are painful to read. I come here to hear from insightful and intelligent people like yourself.
After reading your response, I feel like I stepped out of kindergarten and into high school. Oh wait, there are more silly posts to read. Time to get my toy blocks and ABC puzzles...
Don't get me wrong, I understand there are people who actually use English as a second language. Not trying to offend anyone who learns a second language. I'm impressed and applaud you. I'm guilty of being lazy when typing quick responses. But we need to have full coherent thoughts put down in proper sentences to understand what people are saying. This isn't "the street" and we aren't talking "slang". We are trying to help each other on a common hobby. For some this is more than a hobby. They don't have time to give "free" help especially if they can't understand wat ur sayin...
I have a feeling that a lot of the errors can be blamed on the use of cell phones for posting. I really don't understand how people can use their phones in that way... It could also be because people are fairly sloppy and slightly inept. We won't call anyone out by name... except Emily. She types with her forehead most of the time... from what I hear.
Chrome http://support.google.com/chrome/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=95604 Firefox http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-use-firefox-spell-checker IE http://www.howtogeek.com/76223/add-spell-checking-to-internet-explorer-9/
I do think that people should put a little time and effort into a message if they are trying to describe a problem... and are asking the community for help solving said problem.
I just can't type like that. It's faster and easier for me to type like a literate human being than by slamming my face into the keyboard. When I see posts where it's numbers and single letters it makes me think that person figured out how to operate the microwave with the door open or they wear a hockey helmet and ride a short bus to get around.
If you want to hear how dumb your post sounds before you post it, try this.... http://www.naturalreaders.com/ http://www.text2speech.org/
I use my phone 99% of the time on here. So honestly using a cell phone is a poor excuse for illiteracy. I know I don't always spell every word correct. Sometimes my phone does auto correct something and I don't catch it. But for the most part, if you proof read things, they'll come out ok.
Messages posted with a cell phone... "excuse me, but your tiny cell phone screen makes my eyes brain hurt".
The one that gets me is "n e" in place of "any." It's the same number of ****ing keystrokes. You aren't saving any time doing it. It's like going out of your way to look like a ****ing child.
Totally agree with this. Your not texting your buddies. My biggest issue is when someone is asking for help diagnosing a problem. It's just ignorant to think people should have to damn near translate what your saying and then also diagnose your problem.
It really isn't that hard to make a coherent, literate post even if one is on a mobile device. I post regularly from my phone, and yet somehow I manage to avoid using common slang and "phone talk". It probably helps that I find such "phone talk" irritating and stupid. Sometimes I think it actually takes more time to devise some idiotic abbreviation than it would to just type like a human being. Don't get me wrong, phone slang is fine and all (I guess) if you are texting your bff omgz 4reelzees wat u doin lol, but if you are going to post on any sort of forum, at least make an attempt to form sentences. English as a second language was mentioned, but I think almost everyone can identify the difference between a non native speaker and one who is using phone slang. This post made from my cell phone. Omg.
The one I catch myself get lazy at is "prolly". The one that bugs me the most is not capitalizing your I 's . Brakes Breaks <----this one also drives me insane, if you think your breaks are bad you should talk to your boss.
Oh, the "brakes/breaks" one does cause my blood to boil. But nothing gets me into a spelling nazi rage like the word "quite/quiet." Especially on car forums. Because the inevitable exhaust threads that pop up twice a year where someone says, "that exhaust sounds great, it has rumbles, but is still quite." And everytime I see it, I yell into my computer monitor, "QUITE WHAT? READ IT BACK TO YOURSELF! OR CAN YOU NOT READ!?"
My take on it is if you aren't willing to take an extra minute to write a thoughtful post, I'm not going to spend an extra minute to write a thoughtful reply. I think that's the general sentiment held by most people on here. It's less about spelling, grammar, or if English isn't your native language. To me, it's more about how self entitled and hubristic the author comes off as. For example... Not ok. Grounds for flaming: "car iz ded. batt died 2nite. help?" Marginally acceptable. Will ask follow up questions: "My car died tonight. Can someone come help?" Thoughtful. I'll be on my way: "My 02 wrx died on the side of the highway tonight and I'm stranded at exit xx on 35w southbound. I think it's the battery but I'm not sure. Can someone come help be get it started? I just cancelled my AAA membership and don't get paid till next week. Call 123-456-7890, thanks!"
Some of us was in Esl classes since Elementary all the way through High School and still was in collage today Anything wrong with my grammar or spelling?
Nope. Totally legit. Serious answer... it's not about esl, it's about effort. If someone is responding negatively based on what they perceive is a non native language user, than they're just a prick. fwiw English is my third language behind Japanese and Cantonese.
Yes exactly, its not about language or anything like that. It is the effort. If you want help, it makes things easier with a legible description.
