    Today was a great day.

My 10 year old daughter willingly asisted me on working on the 98 OBS today.

We removed the hood, jumped started it, removed the TMIC, and stared at the wiring underneath for evidence of an EGT probe connector. Apparently the USDM harness is not the same at all as the JDM harness. That was about an hour and right before lunch so we called it a day as she had softball a couple of hours later.

Julia now knows the difference between SAE and Metric and what 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" drive ratchets are and their differences. She learned about hose clamps, t-bolt clamps, ad recirc valves too. She also thinks the 98 OBS is louder than my 02 WRX while I think she needs her hearing checked.

Tomorrow, we install and wire the EGT, install the 460cc injectors, install the JDM ECU, hook-up the wideband O2 again, and see if it runs. Could be another great father-daughter day.

Thanks for allowing me to share.

My two are already Subaru fanatics, but they're still a bit too small to be doing any wrenching...

Yes, I'm whoring up this photo 'cos *I* think it's great ! My two little trunk monkeys with a world class Subaru rally crew. I was so excited by this, I completely forgot to get a picture of me with these guys. Oh, well.

That's cool. When I was young, my dad taught me a lot about mechanics. I always took things apart to figure out how they work. I wasn't so good putting things back together :) Now, I do most of my modding myself, with the help of the internetz of course LOL.

If only I was born into a family like you guys... my dad is still confused as to why his truck uses more gas than the car.

    So quick follow-up...

On the day after the first post we did the following...

Removed the 460 cc JDM injectors from the JDM intake manifold. Discovered that the JDM injectors, while still side feed, are slightly different than USDM injectors and therefore do not fit the USDM fuel rail.

We then installed USDM 550 cc STi injectors, swapped to cooler spark plugs, and put the intercooler back on. I also trimmed the throttle cable linkage a bit on the end as it was rubbing on the IACV solenoid. The battery was dead again so I didn't start it up right then but I put it on a trickle charge and went to a local semi-pro baseball game with my wife and daughter.

We got home at around 11 PM and the battery was charged. The moment of truth was upon us and I was about to find out if my JDM to USDM ECU crossover harness will work. A short turn of the key and the car fired right up. There is a CEL on but I have to wire in the OBDII port to the JDM ECU to read it.

I took it for a short spin to see if boost would occur. I didn't push it hard and only got it up to 4 lbs of boost I backed down. It has a tank of 87 octane in it that I need to drain. When I pulled it back into the garage it was having very light misfires from running rich. I suspected that with the bigger injectors it was gonna run a bit rich.

This week the goals are to swap intake manifolds and rework the intake tubing to resemble the OE JDM one which routes the same as the 02+ WRX intakes. Thursday and Friday look like nice cool weather to do this.

I have two daughters and a son. I assume my son will only play the flute and be interested in tap dancing (he's only 20 months) but at least one of my daughters likes going: "faster so i tip over in my seat"

sounds like me...I was always interested in what my dad was working on..I was known by the family friends as the little girl who could point out any car and know exactly what model and make it was before it even drove by.

    Another update...

It looks as though I may turn this into a build thread so I won't argue if the moderators want to move it to a suitable forum location.

News flash: JDM intake will not fit on USDM EJ22E single port heads.
News flash: JDM fuel rails can be made to fit on USDM intake with only a little modification.

So yeah; I got home from work at 9:45 and Julia met me in the garage when I got home. I started tearing into the JDM intake with my tool retriever by my side to see what we're up against for fitment issues. I must say, its good to have an EJ257 block on an engine stand with EJ22E heads and intake on it because when you wanna make easy comparisons on things, you can. I removed my spare EJ22E intake from that engine and started making comparisons. The IACV is in a different spot as is the PCV and the mounting holes for the fuel rail. Also, the mounting holes on the JDM intake are in completely different spots. I'm assuming this is due to the fact that it was used with DOHC heads. What's worse, is than an 02 USDM intercooler will not fit on a 98 JDM intake because of the IACV location.

So, tomorrow (today as I note the time) I'll be heading to the parts store to get what I need to coax the JDM fuel rails onto the USDM intake. I already bought new intake manifold gaskets from Subaru.
