For me, no cage=no dice. Call me a weenie. MSU's FSAE car last year was pretty sweet. It didn't handle nearly as well as should have, since the person in charge of the suspension was a moron and didn't adjust it at all. They should have been able to pull over 1.4 lateral g's in it.
Its an annual competition that about 150 or so schools build a car to compete for a weekend near Detroit. The cars compete in different dynamic events like skidpad, roadcorse, drag, etc. Then its judged and your presentation /cost analysis play a part as well. Rules are quite extensive. The cars have to use a 20mm restrictor, and there's all kinds of stuff about the frame, suspension, size among others. The rules are about 100 pages. Usually a few teams show up, don't pass tech and have to head home. At MSU, most of the guys that work on it are automotive engineering technology majors since they partially take it as a class. Others have helped too, but it can be kind of a clicky thing.
Would you have to be in the automotive engineering class to work on it, race it, etc.? Or is it open to anyone and just happens to be a part of the automotive engineering class teachings or at least demonstrations?
There have been ME guys that have worked on it in the past. Some of the AET guys can be d-bags though because an ME guy was a dip**** last year apparently. Anyone can work on that is a student though. It is a HUGE time commitment and it tough to study full time, hold down a job, and be involved with the formula car. My roommate did it last year and had no life. Nobody ever said building or maintaining a racecar was fun... I don't know yet if I'll get involved with it before I graduate. Also, I don't know if I want to deal with the politics. A bunch of the automotive guys live together and that means some BS. The car last year was a top ten car, but finished in the thirties due to that crap.
Yeah, I tried to join FSAE when I was at he U and everyone there was the hugest d-bag. Super cliquey and all morons anyway. Their car was probably one of the ones sent home every year, because the thing was a piece of crap anyway. It was a complete joke how elitist these jackasses were considering how poor the build quality was. Plus I was the only one there with any autocrossing experience... freakin' jokesters.
Yeah <---- You'll see that right across from Wissink Hall Come say hi. Maybe I could teach them something.
