A buddy of mine is giving me a 1669 Polaris Indy XLT that his brother put into a tree last week. Basically if I rebuild it, I can have it. Of course he'll be borrowing it when he takes trips and he needs an extra sled, but yeah-flipping-hoo! I live right on a bunch if trauks so I'm pumped. Anyway, I need to know where to get parts. I have not assessed the damage fully as he'll be dropping it off this week, but the thing took out a dead, rotten tree at about 30mph, so the front bumper and nose cone are toast. I'm going to try to repair the fiberglass as best I can but it doesn't need to be a beauty queen - just fully operational. It starts and runs fine (he drove it home for about 20 miles) most of the damage was cosmetic. Parts I KNOW I'll need: Exhaust Front Bumper Nose Cone Windshield. So, where would you suggest I get cheap replacement parts? Here are some before/after shots so far Before: After: I'll take this tomorrow Before: After: Before: After: Before: After:
Your best off looking on craigslist for this crap, people part sleds out every day. My father has lots of crap I'll see if its anything you need.
Mound is where he is at. So you need a nosecone, a front bumper, a pipe and a windshield? He should have at least one of those items. I'll check it.
www.snowmobileparts.com There is also a place in Victoria MN - All Power Sports, they sell a lot of used stuff. My sled was put into a telephone pole....just be ready for a lot of work. Was the frame at all damaged?
Victoria! That place across from the car dealership - on the same side as the DQ? If so, that's flipping awesome. I drive by there on the way to work. I don't know about the frame, I should have the sled this week. The tree was an old, rotten and dry tree about 1/4 the size of a T-pole so I hope not. It broke off when he hit it so hopefully it gave quite a bit.
Yeah, any or all of those parts would be awesome. Mound is just down the road. I looked at the sled in the dark last night and it doesn't look super bad, as I said mostly cosmetic. I did, however, notice that there appear to be two buttons (or holes for switches) on the handle bars that may be gone. Any of you know of or have been on one of these?
http://www.kpigroup.us/Site/KPI.html click on the one for snow stuff, i used to work there designing stuff they have quite a bit, but can't seem to find a link to the actual website.
If your looking for brand new stuff i go to JRGraham. They got good stuff I have a question. Does anyone know what size track fits a 92 polaris indy 500 classic touring? I'm thinking about getting a new one but don't know where to look.
there is a place up here Called "Emerson's" I think that ships snowmobile parts all over the country.
Well, it's not the sled I thought it was. Here it is - in my garage. There is a little "structural" damage but I think that the parts that are bent can be replaced or pounded out. It also needs new rear shocks - how much of a PITA are those to replace? It's the "Extra 12" whatever that means
used parts here , http://www.artssnowmobileandatv.com/ , would have to call to see what they have , but they always have had what i needed in the past everytime i went there
My father has zero parts for that style of sled, Those are really neat and rare though, any 500, indy trail, indy 440, hood (of the same style) will fit on that sled.
Ha. I figured as much. It will probably have to be next year - I don't know if I'll have it in trail condition for any more action this year. We'll see.
ted, if you need help or just want some company when working on it, let me know. I dont know much but I would love to learn.
Oh god, those are the sleds I grew up driving. That "switch" on the handlebars will be the complete thing, with the handwarmers and thumbwarmers. (some even had footwarmers) Also--a set of proper pipes sound wicked on those, btw. Probably cheaper than stock, too.
The evolved chassis had the coolers right under the foot wells so they always have foot warmers when the engine is running. On a liquid cooled model obviously.
What pipe did you go with, Dan - and where did you get it? I've found some on Craig's for 25-45 bucks.
That looks like it might need alot of work. I used to have 2 just like that but i sold them. What size enigine is yours?
Yeah, I don't know how much work it will be but I figure it will be a fun project. I'm pretty sure I can either pound out or just replace the front support and a few other bolt-on type parts and it'll be good enough. I took off the front bumper/handle thing last night and it started to take a little more "normal" shape. No idea what size it is, I'll go with AWDimprezaL as I don't have a clue. I hope to spend a bit of time on it this weekend. How involved is the replacement / changing of the rear shocks? Can any of you give me the basics? Does the whole track have to come off?
Nope it shouldnt, if you jack up the back far enough to get the track off the ground, they should be pretty easy to get to.
I just had to replace the rear center shock in one of mine and i got it in but the skid frame was out. Getting that thing back in SUCKS!
Going to pick up some replacement parts tonight: Exhaust Front Bumper Hood Hinges Belly Support Frame Gas Cap And heater switches (handle and thumb) being shipped from an E-bay guy.
Here is the sled as of today and tonight. The exhaust manifold was massively tweaked so I picked that up as well. I found all of the parts from a guy south of the cities. Total spent so far, $160.00. I still need the windshield and I'll need to do some work on the hinge-part of the hood. When I was working on the thing, I noticed a control arm that is bent and a suspension linkage. Nothing bad, just eventually.
before and after pics in the 1st post. My little guy and I took it out into the back yard tonight. He LOVED it, and acually fell asleep on my lap after about 15 min's.
The easiest way to do it is to remove the rear suspension, which is easy, 4 bolts right on the tunnel, and loosten up the tension on the track (@ the rear wheels)
cool, thanks! How do I determine the tension for the track when I'm putting it back together? And, do these 4 bolts remove the suspension track and everything?
The track will not come all the way out, its basicly held up by the suspension, as for tension, leave a little flap in it, not too much though, maybe an inch.
So I got the thing into the garage last night and went to go put the shocks on, but couldn't find these mysterious 4 bolts... I'm going to do some searching on a sled forum today to see if I can find a how-to or any pictures of how it's done -but any and all help would be appreciated. Basically, I just need to know where the 4 bolts are. Also, any tips on jacking up the back of the sled? AND, is there a fuse panel for the dash lights? I HAD working tach lights and went to go figure out why the speedo lights didn't work, and after I took out the low beam bulb (which is getting replaced) none of them worked. I have not tried new bulbs yet, that's tonight, hopefully.
as far as jacking up the back of the sled depends on how brave you are, i've used 2x4's in a pinch. But the do sell jacks specifically made for lifting the rear end of the sled. or you can use those ahh what are they called "off road" jacks for the lack of the name, that you see hanging around on jeeps, and such. if i was closer to you i think i actually have one of them rear stands and "off road" jacks lying around someplace that you could borrow.
