I have talked to Izzy about this and thinks that it will be a plug and play swap, less tach, but has anyone done this swap? I have a 2003 H6 leg outback as the donor. The host car is a 2002 Legacy 5 speed. Hoping to have a "trouble free" swap. Thanks in advance for assistance.
Plenty of people have done the 3.3 h6 swap into manual gc8 imprezas. That being said, you may want to look into gear ratios of the legacy transmission and the outback. You'd be using the legacy front and center diff with an outback rear diff. If they don't match you will run into issues. Also, the transmission crossmember for the legacy may need some modification to fit into the legacy, unless the auto trans crossmember is compatible.
Plug and play? Motor will line up with mounts and trans (bellhousing matches up... mostly) with no modification so in that sense, kinda. the ez30d/r is shorter than the eg33 so fitting a radiator is much easier. Wiring merge looks like a pain unless you go with a standalone. Not sure what year started using the factory security that requires the key, tach, ecu, etc... to all match, but none of that sounds like fun... check out Terry Ammerman's thread lol. No idea wtf Curry is talking about but I'm assuming the host vehicle is a 5speed. In that case, no need to worry about anything except upgraded clutch and potential wear on drivetrain components. Here's a link to the first rally team to do the swap (into an impreza) http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=418058&highlight=ez30. Might be able to get in touch with them still.... dunno http://linaracing.com/main/node/29 I'd still love to do an ez30 swap eventually but the eg33 is still so much cheaper. The gap is getting smaller though.
Good thing I have a entire donor car. I'll check the ratios, to be sure. But wait! Im using the existing 5spd and rear diff, so no big deal there. As for the wiring uh crap! I do know there is no security features on either car other than keyless entry on the 03. The host is a 5 spd so I was hoping it would be somewhat easier. Being that the "base" vehicle is the same platform I was hoping the harness would be very close with some minor differences. Technically wouldn't it just all drop in other than the ECU and not being an auto?
Yeah ratios don't matter. Assuming all you're doing is taking the outback motor and stuffing it in the legacy. Drop-in as in the ecu physically fitting in the same location and the body harness likely sharing mounting tabs, yes. Drop in as in plugging the outback engine harness into the legacy body harness? I would be really surprised if it did. I imagine the abs wiring is different as well. The tcu (or lack of) will obviously be different as will most of the engine side harness. I.e. harness merge. Just get both factory service manuals and you'll be golden. Re: tach, talk to chux about where he got his 4 to 6 cylinder signal modulators.
Sounds good. Thanks for the info. Ill get the H6 manuals on their way and start looking to see where the difference is. Ill get in touch with chux for sure. Thanks!
Mechanically, it's pretty easy. Bellhousing lined right up, motor mounts drop right in. The extra torque might eat that 5-speed for lunch if you're not careful, they do better in the lighter impreza chassis with the H6... Wiring will probably be pretty close to plug-n-play if you swap the whole Bulkhead, and front harness, just modify for the 5MT. The H6s all had climate control, whereas the 4-cyls all had manual temp control, so that stuff may be different, but that's probably it. I'll have to do some searching to figure out where I got my Tach signal modulators. Might have one to sell (the digital tach in the previously-mentioned 4Runner swap doesn't seem to know what to do with that signal). Advantage to using a BE/BH chassis, is you can get a BE/BH gauge cluster already calibrated for a 6-cyl.
Cool! Thanks for the INFO, My project winds are restored, kinda. I was about to not do it. When you say Bulkhead harness, is that the harness inside behind the dash That would be the bummer part if that is. Quite a bit of dash to R&R If I scrap the Idea Ill have an H6 car to part with.
I don't believe that the engine controls can easily be separated from the rest of the bulkhead harness. But truth is....not too many people swapping BE/BHs, so I haven't done one... Honestly, if you're asking these questions (i.e., you don't know the car inside and out off the top of your head), I always recommend having a whole donor car for a swap like this. And if you have a whole donor car, swapping an engine between 2 cars that are the same chassis, I wouldn't really even try the harness merge, I would just swap everything over, and be done with it.
Check out and post on Subaru Legacy International's site http://sl-i.net/ I have gotten all my info over there, from my Outback to Leg GT suspension swap to engine swaps. I'm currently researching and pretty much have my 5s swap parts list complete. I'm looking at the opposite of you, I already have the H-6 in my car.....
