^ yah i can change it out easily enough. just started thinking though. new HD will be ~$100 and my battery is going, my wireless isnt working so hot. i wonder if it would be more cost effective to just get a new lappy.

Second thought, maybe you should hold off on a new one until vista comes out... another $100 that'll just be thrown in with a new computer.

^ yet another thing to think about. i think i might just hold off for a bit. i will see how long this HD lasts me,(it seems to be working fine now) and how cheap i can get another.

notebook hds are bad, lol, they're made out of some material that is similar to glass, they break easy and the arm can mess up easily too, lol, we swap out quite a few hds outta notebooks everyday, but I did reply to your thread, I'll see what we have
Keep that external as backup, backup everynow and then, esp if you have important info

Wrong! Notebook HDDs are constructed from the same materials that 3.5" drives are made from (aluminum is the base for the platters). If anything, they are actually more reliable due to the new techniques for stabilizing the actuator arm. Maybe the fact that Notebooks are portable and Desktops are not (typically) could have something to do with more of them failing? How many times does an average person drop (or even bump) and laptop? ....and a Desktop?

As for a disassembled HDD? I hope you realized you just signed its death warrant. The heads fly ~10-20 nm (yes, that is nanometers) off the platters. The average size of a piece of dust is over 1000x that.... So, now you have introduced 'killer' contamination into the drive. Expect to hear another screeching halt soon. (That is the sound of your head crashing into the platter)

I say go ahead and buy a new HDD and keep the laptop until something really expensive breaks (like the screen or motherboard).

$0.02, from an industry insider.... ;)
