Have Subarus become too mainstream....too average?

This kinda goes along with the "Subarus are the new Hondas," thread, but does anyone else think that Subarus are starting to blend in too much? I've been seeing an increasing number of WRXs around and it made me think that the WRX and STI have become too mainstream. Not in a hipster, "I liked it before it was cool" kind of way, rather, a "I miss the old Subaru," kind of way. Don't get me wrong, I'd give my left nut to own a '15 WRX, but at the same time I want to keep my '05 as long as possible because it's unique (even more so considering it's the bastard child of an affair with a Saab). Let's get one thing straight, Subarus of yesterday were butt ugly. Full stop. I mean, look at this thing. Impreza_1905910c.jpg

For all intents and purposes, this car is pretty ugly as far as design goes, but I absolutely love it. Subarus had a certain quirk and personality. They were a peppy little rally inspired car that you weren't afraid to beat on. My honda friends think I'm nuts, but my all time favorite car is the first generation Subaru Forester. It's ugly and it's awesome. I guess that clever little marketing slogan had a ring of truth to it: Love is what makes a Subaru, a Subaru. I dunno, perhaps I'm getting a little too sentimental and gushy, but my overall point remains the same. This:
    2015-subaru-wrx-inline1-photo-566856-s-original.jpg

is a pretty sexy little streamlined car, but it's also kind of boring. It blends in well and appeals to the masses. I'm sure that was Subaru's intention. To break into the market hard and sell as many WRXs as possible, which by the looks of it, they're succeeding. No offense to '15 owners. The car is truly amazing and like I said, I would love to own one. I just don't want to see the WRX loose it's quirk and become an econobox. Some may agree, many will not, but it's been on my mind for a while now and felt like getting it out.

maybe because you're looking for them you see more of them? i think a quick way to answer your question would be to compare USA production numbers for WRX/STI for 2004-2015, probably they have grown but i doubt that much that all of a sudden they're everywhere.

with regards to looks i think it's all subjective as i'd never call the 2015 model "pretty sexy little streamlined car", or pay my $ to ever drive one.

and what other than an econobox was it ever? it's a small car with cheap interior; only reason a WRX/STI commanded a premium was due to the engine and being 4wd which pushed it upmarket in to 20K and eventually 30K, but don't fool yourself that an impreza was never an econobox and was somehow subaru's gift to the enthusiasts...

I still have the original 2002 Subaru WRX brochure that labeled itself as having "all the sex appeal of an oven mitt!"

It is an econobox. It reminds me when I read in another forum where a WRX owner was bashing a Corolla XRS owner saying his car is still just an econobox in the end not realizing his car was no different.

A Si is still a Civic, A ST is still either a Focus or a Fiesta, and a WRX/STI is still an Impreza. What do they all have in common? All econobox.

All valued and valid points. I guess I romanticize a different view of my Subaru and it clouds my eyesight. I get that it's an econobox, but I just like to think of myself as being part of an exclusive club of other enthusiasts. It's not really fanboyism, rather, a glaze-eyed drapery over reality covering my childish fantasies.... Or some **** like that...

It's hard to verbalize what I'm trying to convey without sounding like nutjob sometimes...

Sorry that reality is painful for you. It's rather more immature that you have the misguided notion that you are somebody special because you drive a Subaru and sling insults at anyone who dares challenge your tiny little worldview.

There's nothing wrong with liking them or owning them or modding the hell out of them or doing whatever you want. It just doesn't mean they're exclusive. Exclusive usually starts somewhere north of six figures, or is an extremely limited production run.

Challenge my worldview. Good. Everyone needs to have theirs challenged. You just didn't have to be rude in the way you did it.

"Your opinion sucks." "Nope." "Buy a fixie."

You shat over anything I said with one sentence. I don't care if you don't agree with whatever I said and if you want to challenge my misguided ideals, but you didn't have to be a jerk about it. This forum has a spotted thread for people to report seeing other subarus around. People on here call each other by name and have meet ups. Sorry that seemed like a community of cool people.

It is a cool community of people, and most of us call each other by name on here. One thing we don't have is a disclaimer warning for thin skinned people...

OP, at the end of the day every car is just a hunk of metal sitting in the driveway vacuuming funds. Some of them just do it faster than others. What makes communities like this special is that we still give a damn about the cars we drive, unlike the majority of the drivers out there.

Feel free to ignore some of the posters, and hopefully you'll stick around. There's some decent info on here to be had, and some decent social events/meetups going on.
