Very short notice but I am headed to DB Performance at 11:00 for a dyno tune if anyone is interested in coming. Should not take a real long time. Call me if you want to see if I am still there.
This thread is worthless without numbers  You got tuned at 11 and its almost 3 now what's the deal?
I know that he had some issues with DB not having and of the cables and such for the ap. So I know that he had to go home and get some stuff before he jumped onto the dyno. Russ
Well I had to drop a friend off in St. Cloud so with the weather I did not get home till 6 and then the kids needed some attention...
Let me start by saying Shane is a great guy. I screwed up and forgot my power adapter and the computer to AP cable. He drove me down to Radio Shark ($27 for a damn cable, pirates), car was already on the dyno, to get the cables I needed. These guys do a great job. Well I think we found the limits of the stock turbo... what am I saying, we did find the limit of the turbo. Safely at lower rpm 20-21psi and at the top it will not put out any more than about 16psi. Do not expect any more from a VF-39. There is no more left. Can not get any more out of this turbo. I was really hoping to get some more on the top end but it just won't hold any more past were the graphs below show. Though I am starting to wonder why my car always dynos lower than other STi's. I expected to see 280hp/300tq but it was just not to be. The intercooler was hot for most of the runs so there is a little more there and the car did not have any learning because we had to reset everything (unplugged the ECU) but the numbers were pretty much the same as last time. Cleaned up fuel trims, intake adjustments, and raised boost some more.
Thanks for going through all the trouble. I live in St Michael, if I would of known you forgot your cable, I could of been some help. Alright so whats the next step? I am thinking I might want to start asking Russ WRX1 for some assistance w/my AP stg 2.
Talking to Russ is a very good idea. He is a bit busy right now but he does a great job. Might want to think about injectors and fuel pump.
I have been pondering when to put my parts on. Fuel pump is already in along with some handling mod's. Power mod's are sitting in my garage. I'm still trying to learn how to drive this thing, so maybe by early summer.
Your numbers are 20 down on what Cobb advertises for their Stage 2 STis. From what I've seen in comparison to Cobb's dyno for WRXs, I'd say that is just dyno to dyno variance. Your curves look pretty smooth. If you couldn't get more out of the turbo, I'd say you did pretty good. I wish I had that much power.
I had 263hp and 286 ftlbs stage 2 only with the cobb lwg map on that same dyno. You had a colder day also :dunno:
Not really colder in the building though. The door was closed most of the way and the temp was reading somewhere in the 60's I think. Intercooler was very hot to the touch.
The dyno has atmospheric correction to try to compensate for temp and other weather changes. And it wasn't freezing in the dyno room. His car wouldn't take much timing up top without it knocking way too much and the turbo wouldn't hold anymore boost in the upper RPMs, even with an upgraded boost control solenoid on the car. I have tuned other stage 2 STis that have made a decent amount more HP, with a lot less power drop off past 5000RPMs, but those are the cars that actually want and can handle a decent amount more ignition up there.
You wouldn't be able to post my dyno sheet would you just for a comparison? I don't know if you keep those on file but I'd like to see if there's much of a difference. I had the black sti last spring at the scooby dyno day. Also Matt I can't remember but do you have an upgraded ic???
No but was starting to think about a larger TMIC. Not sure where I am headed from here. I was thinking of leaving it along for a while and get a PLX Devices R-500 for keeping an eye on the engine and then start on some suspension bits.
plan out your next upgrade with care. a larger IC will only get you so far. the real decision is if you want to chunk in for a larger turbo now, or a larger turbo when you get to the bleeding end of the IHI. either way your most likely going to upgrade your turbo. imo it's best to admit it now and start saving up.
Yea I of course would like more power... who doesn't, but the car really needs some other things too. I think once the turbo decides to go south I will upgrade but right now I think I am moving on the some of the handling flaws of the car. Like the fact that the car's stock sway bars are just not cutting it. Then some springs maybe. I was thinking of doing a lot of suspension stuff to get the car to really handle a lot better.
