I've seen a few 02's with the yellow turnsignal lens in the headlight removed. Has anyone here done this mod and if so was it very difficult? I'm guessing all is needed then is a yellow turnsignal bulb? I'm putting clear sidemarkers on and would like to get rid of the yellow/orange in the headlight if possible. Or at least that huge lense.

you need to pull the lights apart I believe, and while you are in there do the black headlight mod..

I took mine out whike I was doing the mod and yes then you just add yellow/orange bulbs

most people do it while doing the blackout headlights. There isn't any other way to get it out.

Read all about baking your lights if you want to give it a try. Might as well paint them while you're in there though.

    Hmmmm

Any pics of the blacked out headlights? and with the yellow lens removed?

Anyone know of a step by step post anywhere or is it pretty easy once the lights are off? How long does this mod take?

    Thanks for all the info

    Sweet

That looks sweet, that'll look nice with my black paint job to.

Thanks for the pic, now to figure out how to get the lights off! Maybe just kick it a little or spit at it or just a little yelling

geting the lights off the car is really easy.

You need a screwdriver and i beleive a 12mm socket, although the bolts are so exposed you could probably get them off with a crescent wrench.

Actually, there is a way to get the cover out without taking apart the headlight. I did this on my 02 RS. Take out the headlight, remove the bulb socket and you can push the cover out, it's just held in place with two pegs. You'll need a set of long handled needlenose pliers to hold the cover, and a set of long, thin cutters. It takes a while, but just keep cutting parts off the cover and dumping them out until you've got the whole thing out. It took me and a friend about a half hour. Then, put in a set of Silvervision bulbs (I think that's what they're called, I got mine from a place in the UK) so they look silver but flash amber. Then you don't have to worry about breaking the seal on the lens, and this is if you don't want to paint them while you're in there.

so instead of baking them and relaxing during that half hour you could be doing it ship in a bottle style!

Actually thats a good idea, if you dont want to paint you might as well not risk baking which can let water into the lights if you dont reseal them properly.

    part #'s?

Can anyone tell me or direct me to a site that lists what #'s headlights, foglights, turnsignal, possibly interior lights I need? haven't gotten a close look at my lights yet and can't seem to find a clear answer online as to what lights I'd need. H1 or H3 or what.

Will do. From info found on web it looks like 9007 healights and 194 parking lights. Gotta double check of course.

Just helped my friend change out his low beams and fog lights on his 04 Mazda 6 this weekend, what a pain that was. We managed to do the 4 ligths in an hour and half, not much room to work in that car. I guess many people end up taking of their bumpers to get at the lights.

Here are mine cleared out with clear corners too.

I used the oven roasted technique, and mine re-sealed just fine haven't had any moisture in them for over a year after doing the mod. I left the clear bulbs in the fixtures too.

you could also run a bead of silicone around the edges / groove too for added sealing pleasure..

So you just took out the Orange lense and didn't paint anything inside? I think I may try the "ship in the bottle" trick and attempt to take the bulb out in pieces from the back. Baking just sounds like trouble and i know nothing about it so.

I also like the clean look of your car, very nice. The headlights look good, if thats unpainted I think i'll be able to live with that and not bake them.

Thanks for the pics, what scoop is that?

    turn signal bulbs?

Deride, what turn signal bulbs are you using? Silver/Amber ones? What is the model # for the turn signals? Not sure which ones I need yet.

I'm using the factory (clear) bulbs, and no I didn't paint anything inside the fixtures.

    Clear?

Do the turn signals need to be amber in color per law or is that a myth?

I think its a myth, I looked for specific laws on it and can't find any... they only have laws against blue lights etc. so people don't confuse you with an emergency vehicle.

No, it wont on 04-05's. The pieces you need to knock out are in sealed sections of the lamp.

But honestly, if you aren't painting...this takes maybe 2 hours to do.

    Remove screws
    Bake @ 200 degrees for 15-20min
Pull apart the lens from the housing
Remove the bezel from the lense.
Remove the amber sections from the bezel
Put the bezel back in the lens.
Put some black RTV silicone adhesive in the channel around the housing (where all the other sticky black stuff is)
Then put the housing back in the oven for 5 minutes
Pull housing out of oven and put the lens back on it.

    Done.

^^ just blacked my 02 lights out for me yesterday it looks sweet.

I had previously removed the orange on my 02 by breaking it into small pieces and letting them fall out. Took about a half hour per light.

However I do not recommend this if you are going to eventually paint as I did put a couple of scratches in it doing the above method.

So.....Who wants to help me blackout my headlights? I have no artistic ability (painting) And am way to novice to even consider putting a piece of my car in the oven, but I have a black wrx and i think it would look sweet, if someone would be willing to help it would be much appreciated! Even though there are all those directions out there, knowing me id buy the wrong bulbs to replace the amber pieces and adhesives and yeah, so if anyone had soem free time to help me out with that, id maybe throw em a little cash?

Anyone got a pic of the blacked out headlights on a black bugeyes?

I don't know if I'm going to do too many while the air is still somewhat warm...but when the snow starts flying and we move indoors earlier...I'll probably do a couple weekend jobs (like 6Mtizzle's last winter)

Sure, I got no problem waiting till its a little chillier, i appreciate it. Maybe Slowrex and me can muster up the courage to do it, and not screw it up too bad.

now that I saw how to do it, it is easy.

But I had a hole discomfort thing with putting part of my car in the oven.

The big thing to remember is 200 degrees @ 15-20 minutes. And you don't want your lamps too close to the heat elements in the oven. Otherwise, it's pretty easy.

You can even do this at 175 for 15-20 minutes. RTV softens up the warmer it gets.

Bump for an old thread. The techniques described above should work the same for an 03 Leggy right? I think I'm gonna try this out this weekend.
