    $30 per driver

    Dear Hillclimb Driver,

Thank you for taking the time to register in advance for Healey Hillclimb IV. The latest forecasts for Saturday look dry but very hot, which is better than wet, I guess. So unless a severe thunderstorm rolls in Saturday morning, let’s plan on running Saturday.

I recommend arriving on-site at Afton before 8:00 am. Those who arrive early will get first crack at the hot coffee and delicious breakfast treats provided by Phil Vanner and the Square Peg Diner (2021 East Hennepin, 612-378-0855). Arriving early will also give you time to clear the loose items out of your car, do the tech inspection, and walk the course in advance of the mandatory 8:30 am meeting.

REGISTRATION CLOSES WHEN THE MANDATORY DRIVERS MEEETING STARTS AT 8:30 AM. If you are late, you will NOT be allowed to run, even if you are prepaid. No refunds, no exceptions. Sorry Charlie.

Check the list below to see your car number, verify that I have spelled your name correctly, and that your vehicle information is accurate. I will use this information to make your award certificate. Email me back by tomorrow at 8:00pm with any corrections. As you can see we still have plenty of openings, both for vintage (40 total) and modern (20 total) cars. Open spots will probably fill quickly with day-of-show registrants, so tell your friends to arrive before 8:00am if they want to get a spot to run the course. I will not register more than 60 cars total.

SAFETY will be the word of the day, of course. If the pavement becomes wet, we will stop running cars until it dries (think gas-powered leaf blowers). I will also apply strict safety rules to driver behavior. Any driver who I judge to be acting in an unsafe manner will be black flagged for the day. No exceptions, no appeals. The Minnesota Austin-Healey Club has an excellent safety record and reasonably priced insurance, and we intend to keep it that way. At the drivers meeting we will go over course design and the special safety rules. Any driver who does not agree with the rules will be given a refund and have their car removed from the roster. Now, isn't that simple?

BBQ BUFFET LUNCH will be served from 11:30 to 1:30. $10, pay at the BBQ with cash or check. No credit cards. Spectators are encouraged to get in line between 11:30 and noon to space things out and keep the line short. We will pause the hillclimb from 12:30 to 1:30 so the drivers and corner workers can dine.

    Things to bring:

    - Helmets, helmets, HELMETS. We will have some to share, but a lack of helmets will do the most to slow us down. The more helmets (Snell 85 or newer) that people bring, the more runs everyone will get! Label yours with your name and the size of the helmet.

    - large wide push broom to sweep the course

    - gas powered leaf blower to do the work of several brooms

    - walkie-talkie that works on the GMRS or FRS systems (we will be on channel 6 code 5)

    - video camera securely mounted in your car

    - sunscreen (please let it be sunny) chapstick, a hat, and bug spray to share

    - folding camping chairs for spectating

Directions to Afton Alps: I 94 East past St. Paul, take exit 253 and turn right

onto Manning Ave/Hwy 95. After 6.8 miles turn left onto 70th

Street. After 3.5 miles turn left into the Afton Alps complex.

You are welcome to park in the paved parking lot or on the gravel, but please stay off the grass. Afton is using the grassy areas for a par 3 golf course. Please don't walk on the putting greens.

A draft of the “Drivers Meeting Notes and Rules†is included below. The waiver you will sign upon entering the property contains a clause stating that you have read and agree to abide by these rules, so please read them carefully, and feel free to contact me with any questions (cell 612-237-1883).

Last but not least, the RED BULL GIRLS will arrive around lunch time.

SEE YOU ON THE HILL !!

    - Tom

Welcome to Healey Hillclimb Four! Please stay at the bottom of the hill. Park in the paved lot or on the gravel, but don’t park on the grass because it’s a golf course. NO PRACTICE RUNS before the drivers meeting. Check in at the registration table, then get started removing all loose items from your car.

The goals for today are to stay safe, have fun, and make it possible for everyone to come back again next year. Whether we will be able to come back or not is entirely up to your good judgment. The management at Afton has made it abundantly clear: In order to hold this event next year, we must have NO SERIOUS INCIDENTS. The route is NOT CRASH-PROTECTED! It runs past buildings and through woods with exposed cliffs, trees, and a 50-foot ravine with no guardrail. If you go off course and cause major damage, you will hurt your beautiful ride, maybe hurt yourself, but worst of all, you will cause this hillclimb to be CANCELLED FOREVER. It’s totally up to you: Do you want to be known as “the guy who crashed and got the hillclimb cancelled

We are enforcing a tri-level cone system: 1. Hitting a cone in the bottom section will add two seconds to your time, and we encourage doing a lot of that so you can get it out of your system. 2. The first time you hit one of the tall chicane cones up on the hill, it will also add two seconds to your time, and you will be put on double secret probation. 3. If you hit a second chicane cone today, or hit any edge marker cone on the hill, even on your first run, you will be black flagged - Done for the day. Hasta la vista, baby. Same consequence if you put even one wheel off the pavement at any point, or hit any trash can, fence, tree, building, utility pole, jersey barrier, guardrail, propane tank, or person. Your car numbers will be removed and you will have to turn right at the top of the hill and drive out of the restricted area. You can walk back and watch the safe guys take their runs, but no more hillclimb for you and no refund. Word to the wise: Keep your car under control and stay on the pavement!

For your first run, try to line up in car number order. All other runs just line up with your run group: 1-20, 21-40, or 41-60. You will be started with a “Three-Two-One-Go†hand signal. If you launch before the “Go†you will be DNFed (did not finish) for that run. A waving red flag or a corner worker gesticulating frantically means stop immediately. There’s probably a deer on the course. The finish line is marked by a checkered flag and two green cones on top of two large orange ones. We’ll try to give everybody four runs today. Take your first run at a GENTLE pace because it will NOT be timed. After two solo runs, you can take one helmeted, seat-belted passenger along. Return borrowed helmets to the starting area as soon as you get back down the hill. Feel free to work a corner when you’re not driving. We can use the help!

No stopping in the cool down area. After your run, turn left at the top of the hill and drive well past the ticket booths. We need to fit 20 cars up there. First guy in the run group should find the walkie-talkie by the ticket booth and monitor it to tell drivers if their runs were clean, and listen for “two-way traffic†to know when to drive back down. Do not ask the timing officials about your time. You will be black flagged for the day if you walk within 30 feet of the stopwatch guys at the finish line. Understand that this event is different than a MAC-style autocross. It is NOT A COMPETITION for awards. There are no places or trophies. Every driver will get a certificate listing their personal fastest time of day. All the certificates are the same. No times will be made public until the certificates are presented in the golf club house (where beer is on tap) shortly after the course is cleaned up, probably about 6:00PM.

You are responsible to tech inspect your own car: All loose items removed, battery immobile with hot post covered, brakes firm, suspension and steering tight, accelerator travels freely and positively returns. Cars will be starting at about 30-second intervals, with two cars on the course at the same time. Have your helmet on, seatbelt fastened, and be ready to run when you are fourth in line. Anyone driving or acting in an unsafe manner will be escorted off the property immediately. No alcohol until after all your runs. That means NO BEER with your burger at lunch, unless you are done driving, sorry.

Spectators should remain behind the rope on the south and east sides of the course, along the straights and on the insides of turns. Please stay off the putting greens. No spectators in the danger zone or behind the guardrail on the hill. One photographer at a time can stand behind the Jersey barriers near the finish, five-minute limit. Listen for one long whistle when the course goes hot. Two short chirps means cars are driving up and down the hill at slow speed, two-way traffic. At the end of the day, please help clean up, and return your magnetic numbers to registration. Tom will be whisked away to an undisclosed location to prepare the award certificates.

If you have a problem with any of these rules, please immediately turn in your wristband and car numbers to receive your refund, and have a nice day. Lastly, it’s gonna be a hot day. Drink lots of water!
