alright has anyone else had the problem where the heat shields behind the front brake rotors get bent in just slightly so that they rub on the back side of the rotor causing a scraping niose?

this has happened to me countles times, and it has just happened again (as far as i can tell) so tomorow i am going to bend these things back!

hopefully this time it is still the shield not my axle.

    GRRRRRR........

    wheel beering?

how much? and how hard to replace?

the sound is intermittent. it is most audible between 40 mph and 30 mph.

a bad wheel bearing usually sounds like WA WA WA WA WA WA WA WA WA WA WA increasing speed as you increase speed, but a bad tire can also make funny sounds like that too.

i just replaced the tires less then a year ago. so i really doubt that is the problem.

the sounds is kinda like a small rodent scrathing at hardwood flooring. if you knopw what that sounds like. its very quite, i cant hear it w/ music on or at high revs. also it seems to go away above 40 mph. also it seems to only appear after i have drivent he car for a decent amount of time.

the frequency of the noise does depend on how fast i am going, and not on the bumps i hit or anythign like that. so it make sense to me that it is sometign that rotates.

this started just after that big storm last weekend, i was driving back on 494. so i wonder if i warped a rotor and that is rubbing on the brake pads or something like that.

you would feel a wobble or pulsation while braking if this was the case

my car makes a similar noise to the one you describe, I suspect a wheel bearing aswell, probably got something in it while changing the axle, oh, 4 times this summer....

Yeah, that doesn't really sound like a wheel bearing to me. When mine went out it sounded like I was running my winter tires, just a constant low howling. Although mine was really bad by the time I finally changed it.

if it is a wheel bearing depending on which side.... turn left and right in a sweeping style and see if it comes in or out... if you turn right and it cuts out it may be the left, if you turn left and it cuts out it is the right bearing...

alright i asked my dad bout hits problem and he said it is most likely a warped rotor, whichi am starting to believe. however i do not feel any pulsating in my brake pedal. but this could be partailly due to the bumpiness of my cars ride.

It COULD be, try pushing the brake down very very slightly and see if you feel it more. When mine were warped I only felt it during gentle braking.

to test the runout (warpage) just get something to hold a pen or length of something close to the surface... then turn and watch the gap between the end and the rotor.. it will show how much of a surface warp there is...

you know if the warpage is in the rotor and still runs kinda parralel with each side you wont feel the pulsation... but you may feel a steering wheel wobble under braking... puylsation is when both sides are uneven at different points.... kinda hard to explain in typing...

i think i know what your talking about. i had the rotor off when i was working on the heat shield, and tried putting a wrench on it. it did appear warped, but i though it was just my wrench being bent. hehehe

if its dragging when not on the brakes, you could have a combination of siezed caliper and warped rotor...this happend when i first got my car, i didnt even know anything was wrong till the pad wore away and started making noise, also make sure the things that your caliper ride on arent getting stuck, (dont know what they are called) change your pads while your in there

last time i had the rotor off i looked at the pads, and there were almost new. so i dont want to change me yet. first thing is to see if the rotor is warped, then top off brake fluid. if new rotors fixes it, then i wont worry botu the caliper. if not 4 pot upgrade????

anyway i dont think my caliper is hanging up, i think the rotor is warped enough, and my pads are full enough that they rub.
