Howdy. New guy here, name's Tom. I don't currently own a Subie, but did drive an outback for a while. Currently I drive a POS domestic that I'm hoping to replace with either a bug-eyed wagon or a Saabaru sometime this year. I'm also working on a project Porsche 914 that's taking forever and stealing a lot of my money. It's currently languishing in my garage waiting for me to get working on it again. It's a 75 with the aircooled VW type4 engine in it. This is how it currently sits: View attachment 23998 This is the rebuilt engine that will be going in it. View attachment 23999 My 914 is kind of craptastic, is never going to be a show car, and is not something I could justify spending the money on for a quality paint job. Since its always going to be a bit of a rat, I'm planning painting it blitz black and calling it a day. It'll probably end up something like this, including the diamond racing wheels as they're about the only option out there for a wide wheel in a 4x130 bolt pattern. I may go with red wheels to complete the rad-rod look. View attachment 23997 Ultimately I'm hoping to swap a subie engine and transmission into the 914, when I get bored of the little aircooled that's going in there now. In hindsight I should have just put a subie engine in there to begin with, based on what I ended up spending on rebuilding the type4. Then again that entire engine rebuild started out with dropping the engine to replace a couple of seals, and the next thing I knew I had it completely apart. So looking forward to learning more, and hopefully by the end of the year I'll have two 4-cylinder boxer engines in my garage!
^^Hahaha. Welcome Tom. I've always wanted on eof those 914s. They are pretty zippy little cars Good luck on your search for another Subaru!
Well that was certainly a prophetic statement, and it took way less than a year! I am the proud new owner of this: View attachment 24175 Picked her up over lunch, and now I'm staring at the clock waiting to get out of here!!
Thanks, its nice to be back in a fun daily driver! The 914 has a rebuilt VW Type4 engine waiting to go back into it that's about 1.9L...but should out perform the stock 2.0L VW type4. I kind of did things in reverse order and rebuilt the engine first with the intent of throwing it back in and driving for a while but I ran out of summer and started in on the body work, so hopefully by summer I'll have everything put back together. Long-term goals though are to do a swap to a subie engine and trans, so likely a turbo 4. I'd love to do a Porsche 6, but the costs are just so prohibitive especially when factoring in the transmission needs. Plus I don't feel any real need to keep it a "pure" Porsche as the 914 was always kind of an outcast, and came with a VW engine to begin with.
I was thinking subaru h6! Cool project either way. I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd love to see some more pics of the progress so far!
