My thread on NASIOC hasn't produced a solution as yet; perhaps somene here can help? http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=870527

    The problem:
I have a '93 1.8L AWD Impreza AT with 165k miles. It was running fine until my wife took it out to run some errands. According to her, "Nothing happened - it just quit working!" Here are the details:
    * The car starts easily and idles for a few seconds, then kills.
    * If I start it and press the accerator up and down when it starts to kill, I can keep it running (very rough) for short while, but it will eventually kill.
    * I had cleared all codes and checked after one of my attempts to start it - the code was "#24 Air Control Valve"
    * I had access to another idle air control valve from a '94 Impreza and I tried it out in the '93 - No change in symptoms.
    * I tried disconnecting the MAF - No change in symptoms.
Anyone have any ideas? Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Paul

could be a bad maf sensor, try putting in a different one.....but then again those older mafs never have any problems....but still worth a shot.

    Change your fuel filter.

Maybe your wife drove through a big puddle and shorted the MAF. Your car acts exactly like how Fuji_K's 99 Impreza L acted like until he changed the MAF sensor. I guess that since you have a bad MAF, unplugging the bad MAF will not change the condition of the car.

Having an air leak after the MAF will cause the car to idle high and die, but I doubt your wife went in there and started pulling off hoses. :p

A friend had the same symptoms when the fuel pump started to go bad. But it could also be MAF / fuel filter as well.

I have a working MAF if you wanna try it. It's a 96 Legacy, which the Impreza uses too. My '99 is the suck version.

    Thanks for all the replies.

I have poured through all the vacuum lines under the hood and found none to be disconnected.

FujiK, I would appreciate trying out the MAF to see if it makes a difference. Is there a chance we could meet up sometime this week so I could borrow it? I would happily drive wherever to pick it up....

    Thanks all,

    Paul

Thanks Fuji. Your MAF did the trick. Give me a call and I'll get you your funds!
