I bought the N1 pulley set for my 01 gc8 and was able to get the Power steering and alternator pulleys off no problen with air tools!! But I tried the whole put her in 5th gear and stand on the brakes and break it loose. Well tried that, even a total of about 3' of cheater bar too. Subaru saud they won't take it off for me since its an aftermarket part not made by Subaru or any of their companies. So does anyone have one i can borrow/rent/buy ?? The tool looks like a breaker bar with a circle with 4 studs in a square pattern- Matt

Nope, I tried to get that tool too. I was told they can only be sold to subaru dealers.

I ended up doing the starter trick to get the main pulley off, I didn't want to have to do that, but I had the same problem as you. Just pull your plug wires so the car won't start, prop the breaker bar on the ground and tap the ignition. I also put a piece of sheet metal between the socket and the radiator, in case something slipped. It worked fine for me.

no need to unplug the spark plug wires, but disconnect the coilpack plug from the coilpack.

thanks for the quick responses, I might just make one two out of steel and some careful measuring so that people can borrow it in the future. I will propably try the starter trick, say did you guys notice any real noticable gains on the crank pulley, what was the (BUTT DYNO) feeling?

Ok, got the crank pulley off last night and the new one on. I just hope I never have to take the new one off, since there aren't the 4 holes in the front. BUt to all who have had or will have issues getting the pulley off, I made the tool that you can't buy. Heavy duty and worked like a charm. If you have the pipes you could have it in one hand and the breaker bar in the other. So if anyone need to borrow it, it will just be three easy instalments of $99.99 and one real difficult payment, most likely made in Yen or Ruples. Let me know- Matt

That's how I alwasy bust the main crank pulley bolt loose. Be carefull though. Think before hand which way the engine spins and secure the breaker bar properly before hitting the starter ;)

I'll second that advice. For some reason my first instinct on which way to put it on was backwards, I'm glad I took a second to visual what was going to happen when I hit the starter.

Ok, so I now have a homemade crank pulley holder that will work for PN 499977300, I think that is for most 2.2 liter engine. It's a little rough, but it works. If anyone needs to borrow it, just let me know.

    Thanks,
    Joel
