My lil bro is looking for a used subaru and he is really interested in this one and we're looking at it tonight. Not sure if this person is on the forum or not, but here is the car and the info. If anyone has good or bad comments, I want to hear them. I'm not new to subaru, but I don't know much about the 2.5 RS. I tried talking him out of the automatic, but he insists. http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/car/450162286.html
I like my auto RS. It has torque powah! .. well not MUCH - that one would get a bit more I believe. Not a whole lot more, but a bit. I don't know if this guy is on here either ... he did do a transmission swap..- with a used one? Why?.. Remote start too ? eh ok. Not my thing, but ok. I don't see any issues with your brother purchasing it - people on here may have more insight than I do though
Here's blue book value: http://www.kbb.com/KBB/UsedCars/Pri...580|55122|0|0|&Condition=Good&QuizConditions=
If the price is too high, maybe the dude can be talked down. Tell your brother that in order to make an informed decision, he needs to shop around. The first car he looks at should never be the one he ends up with.
but seriously my work takes forever to load pages: that dude can't get more than bb value for that car, not with the mods, and a swapped transmission .. doesn't even say what the miles are on the engine ...unless that is teh 131XXX :raise:
haha...we are shopping around. I'm going with him, I just don't know much about the 2.5 RS and wanted to see what you guys thought. The transmission thing sounds fishy, which is why I posted this thread. Second or third line says it has 131,000 miles. I know that mods don't raise value. Again, I'm not new to buying cars.
Blue on goldies! F-in HAWT!! I say go for it. If the price is right and he likes the way it drives, cleanliness, etc., I'd give it serious thought. Even if it's an auto; he can get what he wants! Plus, if he has a desire to play with it, aesthetically, mechanically or both, there are plenty of options. It's ultimately his choice. I think it would make a great 'starter' car.
yeah. "sticky" :raise: anyone here have an issue with "sticky" transmissions? on an automatic? What would fix that aside from a swap? (I don't know, srsly, never had that problem ... I've had "slippy" transmissions)
is it odd to see a auto tranny replaced on these cars? I love that he wants a subie, just dont want him buying a lemon, ya know?
I use to have a 98rs, the only thing you have to watch out for is the head gasket. Ask him has it ever been replace, also check if there is oil in the coolant. A head gasket repair usually run around $1,500 from the dealer. When I first bought my 98rs the first mod I did was to change the bumper into a V5 :yumyum: Good luck.. Edit: Is it good just to have AGX in the rear?? Check about the transmission because my old rs (which is a auto too) has like 120,000 (can't remember exact) and it run very strong.
Well, just from 'judging a book by it's cover', I would say that he beat the snot out of it on occasion and destroyed the trans. Called it "sticky" so that he didn't disclose the fact that he romped on it. Mods on a N/A? I would be a little leary about this one. I'd tell him $5000 or no deal. That's quite a few miles and abuse. It would be better to buy this one.http://www.mnsubaru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20127
Sticky auto probably means that it was delaying into drive or reverse. Common enough problem for vehicles with neglected transmissions. If the trans was replaced, just make sure your bro keeps the tranny fluid changed and clean to prevent further problems. If the head gaskets are dry on the bottom side, it may be a good deal. If they are wet, then you may want to alert him to the situation and possibly make a deal with him.
Actually those head gaskets won't leak externally, it's a 98 which means it's the 2.5 DOHC motor. If they haven't been replaced, you may want to check the smell or color of the coolant in the overflow reservoir. If it looks oil, or smells really bad, it may have blown head gaskets.
True but my old rs when the head gasket went there wasn't sign of any drip (dry under). The first sign was oil in coolant.
We looked at that one, but the miles are super high. He needs it to last through college and he just turned 16...so not sure about that one. We did like it though. If only it had 150k instead of 250k
Ok, I'll make sure to check the coolant and the entire motor for oil leaks. I gotta s/s/s, so i'll check this thread once more before I leave here. I really appreciate the quick responces. Thank you
Some go to 550k. Really, if the car has 250k on it, it has been well maintained for certain. My friend Sol had a Jetta with 56x,xxx miles on it when he sold it. And it still ran when he did. Plus...for now anyways, he could put the extra change in his pocket. Who's to say that the 2.5RS won't need a short/longblock in a month after he buys it?
That's very true, never thought of it like that. The miles doesn't really scare me, it the price with those miles that scares me. I wouldn't pay that much for those miles plain and simple. Nothing against you or the seller, just my personal opinion. Alright, I'm off to see the wizard...I mean car. I'll let you guys know what happens later. Adios!
Car is a no go. There was oil in the coolant, oil leaking from the head gasket, it shook a little under braking, it pulled slightly to the right, the abs light was on and the check engine light was on. It needed new winter tires and the body was in less than good condition. Rust on one of the rear wells, oxidation on the roof, and scratches and dents all over. I know it's an older vehicle, but it was excessive. The guy thought it was in good condtition and would take no less than $6300. We told him $5000 or no go and that was it. Lil bro was a lil upset, but I told him why and what it would cost for everything and he gets it now. So we're still on the look out for a Subaru under $6,500. Must be AWD and automatic.
^^^Well, that kinda sounded like a pile o' shiot from your description!! Sorry to hear it didn't work out for the bro... Interesting that the guy is so firm on the price. GL!
Huh, beat to ****. Go figure. Book by cover=1 "Sticky" transmission=0...but failure he did achieve. Your brother is WAY better off not owning that car. Something will come up!
Found and bought one. We found a good 1999 Legacy SUS on craigslist. Nice condition and runs perfect. A new member will be joining us soon..my lil bro! Thanks again for all the help you provided guys!! I really appreciate it.
