On my way to work today, I was sitting at a stop light and noticed my engine was making a unusual amount of shaking. I could feel the steering wheel and my seat vibrating like the engine wasn't running smooth. Sure enough as soon as i started moving the Check Engine light came on. After work I drove to the friendly neighborhood autozone and they pulled the code for me. The code was P0301 which stands for a cylinder misfire I believe. Anybody know what could be causing this? They cleared it out for me and it hasn't came back yet but the engine is still idling rough. Please help. Oh by the way my car is completely stock.

Check your spark plugs perhaps? See if they are fouled. I'm not sure...I get a totally random misfire code every few months.

In adition to Joels comments that would also be indicative of a coil failure as well. Just keep on your toes and watch it. Did the code they pulled go with a particular cylinder? The stored code should have that info.

    P0301 is Misfire Cylinder 1.

If the car is acting differently, investigate it. Cylinder one is the passenger side front. Check the coil to make sure it's on the plug(tight) and check the connections to the coil. If no luck, then check the plugs.

Personally, I get P030x all the time because of my flywheel, but others w/o flywheel have reported problems too. My experiance has been it's with low speed, high electrical load situations. I suspect the battery but am too cheap to replace mine until it's done.

Are you sure the engine is rougher than normal, or are you thinking about it too hard and trying to validate the CEL? Subaru engines do vibrate a bit.

I get P0303 all the time. I even had my ECU sent to SOA for a software update when I first got the car. It's starting to bug me now so I'm gonna take it in when I get some recalls done and see if I cant get something done under warranty.

It's definitely not running right. It almost feels like the idle is just really low when i'm sitting at stop lights. Is there any way to just raise the idle up? I wish I could bring it to Subaru, but I don't have warranty because it's a salvage vehicle and they rape me with charges.

Yup that was my virgin event and now I'm completely addicted. Thanks for the compliments about the times, I just couldn't beat your even faster times. Hate to see you leave the SI class, we had some wicked competition going on. Are you gonna be at the next event?

You probably wont be in SI yourself, after the next event. It'll be nice to have someone to compare my times too. However if you're already getting times like me on your first event, you'll probably be a couple seconds faster the next one. I might not even do midway, I dont really like the site and I'd rather work that day to try and buy some new tires for Valleyfair.
