So I'm in the process of (getting everything worked out for date of purchase and what not) trying to buy a vehicle thats located in Denver CO. I've been in contact with the private seller and we have come to an agreement on price, but I have never purchased a vehicle out of the state before. So what I'm wondering is, does anybody on this site have any experience with this situation/what does one need to do in order to successfully purchase a vehicle out of state and bring it back to MN for license and what not? thanks!
I've brought two Subaru's home from Colorado. Both from the dealer though. I'd take the car somewhere to get it inspected before the trip home. Go to the DMV with them and get a temp tag (did that in PA once). They can help fill out the title with the previous owner. Get home and transfer the title (and pay tax/tabs). Don't speed. It's 12 hours from Denver. Are you paying cash or financing? If financing, ask the lender what they need from the DMV/previous owner/etc.
Depends on the state. I would suggest calling up CO dmv followed by calling the MN DVS to double check all the paperwork you will be collecting from the seller will be adequate (typically, just a title will suffice in MN). If you haven't already, go see it before purchasing or have a 3rd party ppi done by a reputable shop. Is there a lien on the car? If so, you'll need the seller's bank to fill out a lien release form. You'll pay off the remaining balance (cash, check, bank check, etc...). Contact their bank ahead of time as some banks require a couple days notice. Are you financing? If so, talk with your bank. Usually they can just cut you a check for the amount you are approved for or they can write the check directly to the seller/seller's bank. A bill of sales may not be needed, but it never hurts to have one. MN doesn't require one to transfer a title, but CO might require one to release the title. Check with the CO dmv about their specific rules for out of state sales since every state has different rules... for example, the plates might stay with the seller or they might stay with the car. If they stay with the seller, then you'll need to issue a temporary plate if you plan to drive it back. Assuming you are flying out there to handle the transaction, make sure everything is open the day you plan to buy the car (bank, dmv/courthouse, notary, etc...). Good luck! Are you going to tell us more about the car?
thank both of you VERY much for the help, i'll be calling the CO DMV tomorrow to specify what needs to be done and I'll ask the seller if he is willing to take the vehicle to a shop to be inspected though i dont believe it will be a problem the car looks very clean and claims it was very well maintained..with that i have requested a large number of photos engine bay, int, undercarriage etc. as for the vehicle, it is an 06 CGM 5mt 2.5i wagon with 65k and some (to me) sensible mods/great platform. I wish I were able to afford a WRX but slight build up of an N/A will be lots of fun and my hopes are easier on gas (fingers crossed!). also, GF will be up for sale quite soon once and if this all gets figured out
