Hey all i havent posted in a while, been uber busy with school adn all. but i have finally made time to put in my rear coilovers. they are hopefully going in on tuesday night at my buddys house. when me and chux tried this before we ran into a problem of not being able to get teh bolts out that secrure the shocks to the control arm. however i am now armed with a 4 foot breaker bar and a craftsman ratchet . i have gotten the top 12mm bolts of before so those are no biggie. when i take off the bolts that secure teh shock to the control arm is there anything i have to worry about breaking? those are pretty big bolts but will they take the torque? the thign is i ned my car for the next mornign so everythign has to get done (or at least not broken) tuesday night. if any one has any ideas or advice pls post it i am grateful for it all. i think that the bolts are rusted on becuase the front came out no prob w/ impact wrench. when (if) its doen i will take pictures of it SLAMMED and post em later. thanks all Martin
I doubt you can break them, but it would be really helpful if you spray some penetrant on them a day or two before you work on it.
Hey, Martin! Yea, I don't think you could break those without some serous equipment (maybe with a few people on that 4 foot breaker, but even then), and yea, soak it with some more liquid wrench etc. -Chux
Third on Liquid Wrench (or another lubricant spray). Your bolts will like you more, and your car isn't new so I assume rust has already started a colony around the strut area. I use a hardened steel nut, 24" breaker bar, and a thick, hollow tube that slips around the breaker bar for more leverage. Brand new, those bolts are designed to be torqued high. I wouldn't worry about snapping them if I were you. Even better if you have a torque wrench so you know you won't torque them way past 100 ft/lbs.
thats re-assuring to here. in my chiltons book it says when i put them on to torque them to like 180ft/lbs. thats nuts. are there any other little pointers? when my friend did this to his civic and his buddies integra the broke the bolts off, and need to push new bushing and get new bolts. what do i need to do if i brake them? will it be expensive to get these bushings? i will start soaking thewm in wd-40 tonight, i am starting tommorow night at 8. p.s. chux why is your gl still at home? didnt you take it with to duluth? thanks guys

Anyway, it's an '88 XT6, should be sweet, joe's taking some pics of it soon, and unless I see something really scary, I'll be having brad/nate pick it up on their way up in a couple weeks. Yea, good luck w/the coilovers, and make sure jeff keeps his sawzall away from your car } -Chux
i am doing it at spevs place, so jeff wont be there. he gets sawzall happy. i really hope i dont break anything. i am geting my new amp sometiem this week so i will be runnign both my 12's again w00t. talk to ya later
slight set back, last night we were working on my buddies firebird. just an easy fix pull the thermostat and tos in a new one. well we went through all the work to draint the coolant and start to take off the housing around the thermo and it was leaking coolant for a long time so the bolt MELDED into the aluminum intake. we finally worked out 1 bolt. but the other broke off. so we locked a vice grips on it and gave it hell didnt even budge. then hit it with map gas. no luck blasted it with oxy acetalyne still no luck. sprayed on some liquid wrench. it started to move alittle. not much good when there was over an inch of bolt still in the manifold. so that has taken priority over my suspension. next thign is to weld a nut onto the remaining bolt and give it hell. i am still hoping to get my coilovers in this week. if any one has any ideas about how to get the bolt out pls tell. if this doesnt work the drill is coming out.
