Hey guys....not sure if this belongs here but since its related to a potential buy, I will ask anyway. I am looking at a local Forester XT, and the owner says that there is oil dripping form the exhaust pipe and it creates stream from the exhaust. Is this something that I should stay away from. Owner also says turbo and radiator was replace 2-3 years ago....but has been running fine since. If anyone can shed some light on this, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
The car is on Craigslist in Shakopee. It says the car only needs a new seal for the oil cooler.....is there more to the story? Could this cause the oil dripping from exhaust pipe?
Leaking oil, 113k miles, the seller is still looking for $9200. Steer clear, my friend.. and Nuke says stay away, best to stay away.
Thanks guys. Im not really handy so this advice definitely helps. I NEED to buy one this week. Im only looking at a '04-'05 Forester XT, auto, 50k-120k miles, up to $12,000. If u got one u want to sell....post it here. Im open to.all
If you aren't handy at all, do yourself a favor and buy something non turbo. That's just my .02$ Because you will save yourself money and headache in the long run.
If it is just the oil cooler gasket that needs to be replaced, could be a good deal. Try having someone inspect the car and see what they think. I have had to replace that seal on a couple of STi in the past.
Any one of you experts available to check it out with me this week? If the car checks out ok and i make the purchase.....i can certainly compensate you for your time.
I dont think i can bring the car to you....but i can pick u up and we can go see it. Im also in the northwest metro.
I'd offer him 7,500. If it's un-modified, it's most likely that oil cooler gasket. You would need to put 1k into doing the timing belt and oil cooler gasket from a dealership. I'd also replace the brake pads. I wouldn't pay more than 8,000 for the car. "ask what maintenance as been performed" Offer him 7,500. Walk away and let him sit on it for a couple days.
It's an o-ring but listed as a gasket. http://blog.perrinperformance.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/PSP-EXT-050_10.jpg Replaced Part 30x2 "orange" and part 31x2 "black". 30 should be the same size, but for mine 31 was two different sizes. 06 wrx.
How did we get oil dripping on header from oil dripping from exhaust pipe causing a stream from the exhaust????
Also the header goes around the oil filter and cooler, is it ****ting all over itself to get the oil to hit the header?
The actual phrase the owner gave me was....."oil was was dripping from the exhaust pipe causing steam."
Well I wont comment on the car specifically but there are a couple signs that point to it being **potentially** not a hunk of ****. 1. Good pictures 2. Woman That being said, some things that could be suspicious... 1. Husband isn't around (and its his car) 2. If its an o-ring on the oil cooler, why didnt they just have that fixed (cheap and easy to fix, helps with resale) 3. Little to no detail on the AD. Things to check before buying: 1. Character of current owners. This is one of the best indicators whether the car is going to fall apart as soon as you buy it. Remember that many people sell cars because something has gone wrong, or is about to. 2. Service records (especially Timing Belt, Water Pump, Valve Adjustment, Head Gasket, Turbo replacement) 2. Compression 3. Signs of modification 4. Condition of the rest of the car 5. Valve tick on cold start up
Ironic that this thread is here! I joined MNSubaru in search of resources and tips for my upcoming acquisition - this Forester. Pending sale, waiting on the lien release. I will not say what the price was, but it is on par with this thread. The car is not perfect. Cosmetic issues, the leak, etc. I test drove it, however, and was fairly impressed. Owner bought it 3 years ago CPO. The reason for sale is the sellers are parting ways. I observed a couple things at the test drive; - Acc belt squeak at start-up when turning the wheel - Leak/burning - it seems to be coming from the bottom of the engine bay. I could not see direct evidence. Suspect the oil cooler, valve cover gasket, or possibly CV boot although the pass side CV looked OK at first inspection - A ticking noise on the upper driver side of the motor once the engine was warm/driven, appeared intermittent. I searched online and found a number of comments that ticking happens frequently with these cars; unsure if I can help this with fresh oil etc. My intention is to work the car over once I get it. Fix the leak, change fluids, inspect for other immediate issues. Fingers crossed that it is nothing too horrible. I will have to plan for the timing belt as well; did not initially think of that. Does anyone have first-hand experiencing DIY-ing it? Happy to be here I am also on MNAudi with my B5 S4.
Back to square one. The owner indicated that another offer came in and was trying to raise the price despite us reaching an agreement. I had sent a purchase agreement to keep it all above board, but she brought this up instead of reviewing and signing it. I do not play those games.
I agree. I actually thought about that after posting. I indicated "pending sale", which can be a transient state; nevertheless, I let my excitement get the best of me. That said, I have never had this happen before. When I buy/sell, I am good on my word, and I guess I have been fortunate to have people that have the same conduct on the other end. I was overly confident in this deal. My mistake. If anyone on here is interested in buying the car, bear in mind the seller currently does not have a lien release. I would not recommend handing over payment until both title and lien release are given in return.
If the owner of this fxt is on here they should tell us what this oil leak is. I'm intrigued like im sure others may be.
I called the owner to discuss the oil cooler leak, but didnt discuss pricing. Not sure who that was. Maybe the owner was just playing you to increase the price. The issues seem to be pretty minor if u know your way around a car....can be a great deal. Btw, I purchased the XT at audi st.paul dealer.....turns out its an automatic with premium package exactly what im looking for. Im so glad to be back with the Subaru family.
Not sure. The owner claimed a buyer called and made a better offer than mine, and I withdrew from buying. If the other buyer was legitimate, it would not surprise me if they dropped the offer after seeing the car in person. I am pending sale on another car.
Why would anyone make an offer on any car without inspecting it first? Forester XT's do not have THAT much radness to them.
Beats me. If that is the case, then it is a mistake on both sides. - That buyer making an offer before seeing that the car needs more TLC than they thought - The seller for ticking me off and having no sale at all since I rescinded my offer and the other buyer either rescinded or greatly reduced the offer after seeing the car It's just kind of funny to consider that the seller had the huevos to try to get more money yet winds up with no money at all.
