My husband is giving me the awesomest gift - the ability to trade in his 06 Corolla for whatever I want. I have wanted an Outback for SO LONG. Being from Colorado might have something to do with it, though, what with all the suby's out there. I know about some of the major problems plaguing Subarus (eg. head gaskets in some models) but I'm here because I was hoping to find a bunch of guys to kinda talk to about all the options I have. I'm currently eyeing these two cuties: http://www.pb4w.com/detail-2002-subaru-impreza-outback_sport-used-8111267.html http://www.pb4w.com/detail-2000-sub...ack_manual_w_slash_gb_equip-used-8010509.html Mainly I want to have a vehicle with a roof rack, something I can tow a light trailer with, and over all just a harder working car than our Corolla. It's not that i don't like it, but I am HUGE into DIY and just bought a house, so having a car capable of hauling rented tools around and such is a big deal for me. We also have a large, young, dirty Doberman mix that gets carsick, so being able to cart her around in the cargo area is a big draw too. Anyways, I could use help finding out who the best mechanic(s) are to bring the car to for pre-purchase inspections or even if some of you gearheads might be willing to take some $ to come with us when it's time to buy. I've heard so many good things about DIY repair with Suby's so learning how to maintain my new vehicle is something I plan to do here as well. Hope to chat with you soon!
Welcome and good luck with you future purchase. Budget? How important is fuel economy? What qualifies as a "light trailer" to you?
We're trying to get as close to an even trade on our Corolla as possible, so everything we're looking at is 8k and under, to be perfectly honest. As far as "light trailers" go, I'm talking about the light U-haul trailers, like hauling a sofa home from Ikea, or maybe wood fencing, or a pressure washer, etc. Small utility trailers and not much more than that...so 900 lbs or so?
Theres a very clean looking 94? 5spd awd wagon on CL in Minneapolis. Talk them down about a grand and plow the savings back into your new home. Plus...that car already comes with a trailer hitch and minimal if any head gasket worries.
The gaskets were only a problem on the 2.5 non turbo... It was a problem with the factory gaskets so once they have been replaced the only other thing to worry about is the timing belt. When do you plan to purchase it? I would say check out the event forum... Come out and make some new friends and never have to pay high service costs again Thanks, Dean
I lived in Fort Collins for 5 years before moving out here. I got my BS from CSU. I am having trouble finding it. Can you link it to me or PM it to me?
I just saw it on the Craigslist thread. I really like it, and I'm pretty decent at driving stick. When I go look at it, what should I look for?
or take a look at this one. http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/csw/cto/2790608388.html Things to look for: when was timing belt, water pump etc last done. clutch work, if any. The rest IMO is just everything else you would look for in buying a used car.
IIRC, the scooby engines with head gasket issues was the (phase I) 2.5L DOHC engine. Some phase II SOHC engines had leaks too but Subaru made it so if it leaked, it would leak externally rather than mixing coolant with the oil. I'm not completely sure what year Legacies and Outbacks had the phase I engine so keep up with your research. However, the base 2.2L engine did not have the same issues and in comparison was more reliable.
lol, only some know Fong when they see one. I spend most of my free time with Skyrim and MW3 but I log in here once in a while to add my 2 cents whether its wanted or not.
Husband's playing Skyrim. I've been playing SWTOR. If we didn't do those things in the same room we'd be seeing very little of each other...
My fiance hasn't played Skyrim in a while, because she's been busy with Assassin's Creed and Batman Arkham City. I may need to get my own copy of Skyrim at some point. Though I don't have much time for games anymore.
It looks like a pretty awesome game. I just really, really hate using the first person viewpoint (because I suck at it). So I stick to 3rd person MMOs and games.

You do realize you can roll the camera back to an over the shoulder 3rd person view, right? It's a Bathesda game, the engine is similar to Fallout 3.
You know, I tried that with Morrowind AND Oblivion, and I just couldn't get into it. I'm so busy with SWTOR anyway, though, that I'm not playing anything else. Kind of excited because it turns out one of the vehicles I was looking at is apparently Vector's. I haven't heard back from him yet, but hopefully soon.
It seems I only play FPS games nowadays, but FPS isn't for everyone. My older brother gets sick after playing FPS games longer than 10 minutes. I heard that he vomited once when he played Doom back in the day. Hope you pick up a Scooby you like soon. The snow's just around the corner.
Husband loves to play TF2, but I can't stand it. I like to watch, but I die all the time. My reaction time is down the toilet.
