So I felt like complaining =) I'm sick of state patrols worrying so much about tint! UGH I have been pulled over twice in the last month. I don't have anything else on my record except tint tickets up the a$$! I got a warning today since I bought the car that way and just got it...but the guy was like oh I looked on the computer and 1 month ago today I pulled you over and ticketed you on your blue wrx...CRAP! LOL Sorry =) Thanks for listening =)
I know the feeling. I have had tinted Windows on my cars since I was 16 and had no tickets just warnings up until 6 months ago I got my first one and last Thursday on my 30th birthday I got #2. Can't complain considering how many times I have been pulled over and just got a warning. Oh well pay to play, I just think they would have more important things to worry about like people driving in snow storms with no lights on.
i think what you need to do is Syrie is buy an old cop car with tinted window and not worry bout it!! they dont even look at you!!!
it will not work, plates will come back to her and boom, ticket. officer safety is the answer they will give you. its what troopers do, enforce equipment on vehicles. all highway
Officer safety, but SUV's and Minivans can have dark tint, as well as Trucks. Dangerous people only drive cars. Got it.
At this point, rather than get more tickets, you may be better off getting the tint removed, or I guess you could just deal with the fines
Yeah, what stef said. You could try ditching the wing, but it sounds like they got your number. I had 35% on my wingless wrx, 20% on the porsche, and no tint on the sti... Guess which car I got pulled over the most in
In my opinion officer safety is a bunch of bs. If it is actually a safety issue then would it not be smarter for them to not pull you over for tint? Instead they pull you over and tell you to remove it so that next time they pull you over they can see in your car so you can't shoot them... If you're gonna shoot them why not do it the first time when they pulled you over for something as dumb as tint??? I know if I was a cop and was actually concerned about my safety due to people having tint, I just wouldn't pull them over in the first place. Why risk my life to have one less car with tint on the road? Just my 2 cents Curious as to whether you got pulled over much in the wingless wrx with tint? My sti is wingless and I would like to tint it, but I don't want to deal with the cops every other day either.
i know its illegal so I just pay the fine.. I wont remove it. I put 1000 miles a week on my car, and I have no intentions of doing so with no tint. p.s. I was not complaining at any point, just saying its weird how I went so long with out a problem.
this is a great thread, the cops say its for safety but if someone is going to shoot a cop when they get pulled over they will do it tint or no tint, i also dont think the number of cop shootings in other sates can be linked to the percentage of tint on peoples cars! and its stupid to say that its ok on SUVs vans and trucks but not cars? are they not the same? can you not hide the same **** in the car, or people? and how are wagons not the same as a SUV? and where does a crossover come into that?? i think its BS personally i run 35% on all my cars and have only gotten warnings. but the BS part of that is that recently my little brother got pulled over in my car by a LOCAL COP and he had a tint meter? i thought only sheriff and state patrol had them?? still on the streak of only warnings but i know what you all mean its dumb and i dont see how this law helps at all. actually i think we need to have tint laws like the south, we should get dark tint for the winter alone, anyone driven on a bright clear day in the middle of winter with alot of snow? its bright as hell and shines like a mofo!
I got pulled over twice in the 3 years I had the wingless wrx with 35% tint (once at night and once during the day). Neither officer said anything about the tint. Haven't been noticed in the porsche with 20% but I don't drive it nearly as often. The sti with the giant park bench wing, no tint, and quiet exhaust? Same neighborhood, same commute, same driving habits as when I had the wrx, and let's just say it felt like I had a giant target painted on the side of my car If I did it all over again I'd go with wingless, scoopless, and maddad/cobb/stock looking exhaust. I also live in ricer and muscle car central so I knew I had it coming, but come one, man! I understand the officer safety thing and I do everything I can to be cooperative when I get pulled over. I roll down the windows, turn on the dome lights, shut the car off and put the keys on the dash where they can see them. I don't reach for my ID/insurance without telling them first, etc... But what frustrates the hell out of me is that the rules aren't equitable across the board. The whole SUV vs passenger vehicle thing is about as arbitrary as the harley/truck exhaust vs car exhaust thing... and not just car exhaust, but "performance exhaust" bc I've never seen or personally heard of anyone getting a noise ticket on their rusted out buick. /rant
Why not just get the 50% legal tint?... or else roll down the windows when you see them. Might not be ideal in the winter, or else just keep up with the fact that you bought it from the dealership as is. I bought my car with 50% tint, still have my wing and scoop...only been pulled over for not having a front license plate- my excuse was that I just had a new bumper replaced since some bastard had backed up into me *what a great lie* the trooper actually felt bad on my behalf.
Not a bad excuse... Of course if you have rock chips in your front bumper like I do and the cop notices the might call your bluff haha
The Officer safety line is BS, by that logic we would all have to have Plexi doors on our houses and apartments, curtains would also be rendered illegal.
Thanks for all of your input =) I have 7 tint tickets and 10 warnings now...it's official...they hate me =P
Oh! and when he pulled me over last month he also got me for "loud exhaust"...ugh...it's nothing loud compared to half of the trucks and harleys roamin the streets...oh well what can ya do
Not really. Your house is your own property, but your car is operating on government property. For this state, I think 50% is acceptable but I'm with idget, I think SUV's should be held to the same standard.
I think color plays the biggest factor. Dark cars are less likely to get pulled over for tint because of the color of the car makes the tint not look as dark. A white, blue, yellow, silver, red.... they all look like they have tint that is way darker. +1 the law is stupid... but if you can get a prescription for the tint, then it isn't an issue anymore
If its for officer safety, roll down the window before they even get up to the car, its the fact they cant see whats going on in the car that makes them nervous.. you could be reaching under your seat to pull out a weapon. IMO the law should be when you get pulled over... move your car to the side of the window and have your window down before the cop is out of his car.
im thinking they just really have your number because ive never had any issue with mine and i have very loud exhaust. I have tint that is slightly darker then factor tint as well never had a issue with that either.
I dunno man, I get what you're saying about the contrast, but I think the type of tint, interior, etc... might have more to do with it. My silver car has a black interior which makes the tint look even darker... like all black (dash, seats, pillars, headliner, carpet... everything)... the 20% looks as dark as some 5% in some lighting and as light as maybe 35% in other lighting. The black car also has mostly black interior with 50% tint and it looks really light in most lighting. It only looks dark at night and even then you can make out the driver from the outside. I seriously don't get even a glance driving from my place to uni or driving on any of the highways in the silver car. Soooo, long story short, I'm sticking with the big dumb wing theory  comparo: black car, mostly black interior, 50% non-ceramic tint, no back lighting: silver car, all black interior, 20% ceramic tint, back lit so it should look lighter than it is: Also, my wingless wrx that I described earlier in this thread was black with matte graphite wheels and 35% tint. Never got pulled over. The sti was (ugm) silver with no tint (except factory) and that car was a target for sure. I was going to tint it, but...
i agree that the rules should not be different for sedans versus vans, trucks, etc. but it is one of the easiest probable cause stops ever for a cop to make. so take it off, make it legal or deal with the fines. i have 3 warnings and one ticket (ticket with NO bug dumb wing). and im not bitching, i knew it was illegal when i put it on and have dealt with the consequences. so did everyone else in MN. same goes with exhaust, no one has a real answer why trucks don't get pinched for exhaust. my guess, it is profiling... and again one of the best things to do is roll the rear windows down before he or she gets to your vehicle. and don't lie and say you didn't know it was illegal...
up north its the opposite. in the town where i lived for awhile they would pull over trucks for exhaust but not cars.
Yeah I am with you on the big dumb wing... I didn't even think about the type of tint or interior... I am guessing that does make a difference. I just know my tint on my car doesn't look as dark as a lot of lighter cars.
On overcast days tint will look a lot darker as well. Bright, sunny days it doesn't look nearly as dark. I have 35% on my ugm WRX and have received one warning in the 4 years I've had the car and tint. To the OP, at 7 tickets and 10 warnings, I think it's time to have the tint pulled and just go without for awhile.
I think it's because you guys run tint on your front side windows too. Factory tint on SUVs is only from the B pillar back (this is how I had our Outback tinted and have never had an issue with the police). As an individual in public as a driver and a pedestrian, I too dislike the really dark tint on the front windows. Before I proceed through a 4-way stop or step off the curb to cross the street, I prefer to make eye contact with drivers so I can tell if they have looked my direction and are aware of my presence. When I can't see them because of tint, I can't tell if they have glanced in my direction or are absorbed in a cell conversation or yelling at the kids in the back seat and are going to run into or over me. Tint and front plates. Follow the law or pay the fine and STFU.
I do pay the fine so no need to tell me to STFU Thanks! If you don't like that I'm "venting" then don't read my posting! To the rest of you, thank you for your non-dick like responses =) I have thought about getting a prescription from my doctor for real because I have a skin condition where I'm very sensitive to the sun and can't get burned blah blah blah long story but anyways I mentioned it to the guy and he told me I couldn't do that but I'm still asking the doctor the next time I go there.
so people should not wear dark shades because they might not make eye contact with pedestrians...I like tint on my windows because you some how prevent thieves from breaking into your car for either your stereo or other valuables. Tint also reduces heat inside your car on those 100° days and direct heat on your skin when driving...therefore, having it on all windows is functional but you got to choose whether you want the legal 50% or lower.
i have never ever seen anyone other then non local cops have that stuff, just like most local cops dont have the needed equipment to check to see if my exhaust is too loud either!
as for officer safety i will say it again, why does this matter if someone wants to shoot a cop that bad he will be ready for it before he is pulled over, he dont need tinted windows to do it. tinted windows dont shoot police, crazy people do! again i dont think that more cops get shot down south where they can leagally have more tint. i dont think tint is the answer to police shootings. i also agree that it could be the fact that the tint is all the way around, i dont know anyone rocking just the back 3 windows (though i got pulled over not even 5 miles into Mn when i was driving my car home for the first time from chicago and only the back 3 were tinted) but i agree that laws need to not be just for some. as for someone saying deal with it when you know its illeagal and saying that its ok for cops to profile, you got some wrong thoughts going on, profiling is not ok for the cops. and if you can prove that they are profiling you can get away with it. i know this because i talked to our local police chief about the cops profiling my brother because of the exhaust on the car he was driving, i told him it was leagal it was not too loud and if he didnt believe me then get it tested but im not going to deal with the local police bothering him all the time wasting our time for nothing. He agreed with me and said he would make sure he said something about it. he must have becuase my bro hasnt been pulled over since. (i talked to the police chief because being pulled over 5 times in 3 weeks locally is a little over the top)
^^ but using your profiling logic fails... let me explain.. You say that by saying if you know it is illegal deal with it is wrong cause its cops profiling you.. then that is like saying the cop cant pull you over for speeding because he was profiling you for going faster then the posted limit instead of pulling over some other person who doesnt fit that profile.. If you know your tint is ILLEGAL then you have NO RIGHT to complain.. simple.. If you know the speed limit is 50 and you are going 80 and get caught... you cant complain... You stick your wang in an under age girl adn get caught you cant complain they profiled you as a pedo because.. well you are.. Profiling SHOULD be done... TSA is a good example.. 4yr old kid being patted down... great work.. Middle Eastern 20 yr old who buys a 1 way ticket yada yada... that needs profiling!!! I had illegal tint, loud exhaust yada yada for the last 5 yrs of owning Subarus... I got pulled over once or twice and NEVER EVER did they even mention the tint... I drove all the same places as the people who have been ticketed.. NEVER got a ticket etc... I think it also comes down to the way you are driving that brings attention to yourself, and also the attitude you give the officer.. simple... its like jugging with a live grenade... eventually its gonna go off..
I dunno, my truck has dark tint in the back and nothing up front (came that way from the factory). The GF got pulled over for tint in stp. They ran the plates too bc the officer thought it was a stolen car at first? Or so he said. I suppose she could be the only blue eyed redhead in the world with a really asian name :dunno: I'm going with probable cause ("profiling") on that one. It happens. Live with it and deal with it like an adult if you get caught doing something you know you're not supposed to be doing. If you really want to make a difference, there are more productive ways to get a law changed than bitching on a forum Anyway, back to the ranting...
Sorry lil girl, no sympathy here, you broke the law you pay, my wife expected me to side with her when she used to get tint tickets in her mazda all the time, nope! Maybe I am just an ass (lol maybe? I'm for SURE an ass) Try taking the tint off the front windows, I dig how this looks for some reason anyways. Or get legal tint.
As far as I know there is no DB level law in Minneota in general, maybe some cites, if there was EARS would not fit the requirement. As I understand the law for other than motorcycle it is a matter of weather the exhaust looks stock or not, basically no modifications are allowed to the original exhaust other than to replace it with a OEM equivalent exhaust.
